Do you have any favourite English translations of The Iliad or do you only read it in Greek? I've read the one by Caroline Alexander and started reading one by Fagles. I discovered the Iliad way too late in my life which I regret, but now my obsession doesn't let me think about anything else

GOOD GOOD. What else is there to think about than The Iliad.

Unfortunately I have to admit that I have not read a single english translation of homer ever, and even though I own multiple copies of the iliad all of them are in greek 🫥. I really need to get around to it some day.

The Penguin paperback classics translation by E V Rieu is a good prose translation.

Also really looking forward to Emily Wilson's translation coming out in September. Her Odyssey is amazing.

I know our modern labels didn't exist back in ancient times but if they did Dionysus is definitely genderfluid.

You cannot read The Bacchae and tell me this is not true. (Anyone who would like some evidence I will be happy to provide but cannot be bothered right now)

Also I feel like the interaction between Dionysus and Artemis is such an overlooked concept. You cannot tell me that the Bacchants and the hunters would not interact. Both Dionysus and Artemis offered protection and escapes for women who had little (such as Sparta) to no rights.

Okay yes. I will protect this entire family (yes even Oedipus even though he is an extremely hubristic prick). It has been cursed since it began by a necklace given to Harmonia by Hephaestus as a wedding gift. Like because of Hephaestus' jealousy toward Harmonia (completely innocent and cannot be blamed for her parentage) generations of the same family suffered over and over again.

Just to clarify I still hate Oedipus but I refuse to blame him for his fate. But his attitude sucks.
