OP, this is genuinely such a cool style for her. Lizzie deserves to be threatening and faintly eldritch at times. The shadow wings are probably my favorite part, but I love literally all of this.

A couple of things I absolutely love about this AMV:

The expression on Shelby’s face when she looks up (v scary in a good way)

The bit with Avid in the mirror!

The way it zooms into Doc’s eye and you can see the war reflected there

The fact that we never see Owen’s face, just his back as he faces a statue of Louis. Beautiful symbology there!

That every one of the cast is featured somewhere and it looks like an anime opening (/vpos — this video is really high quality)

Was just working on the binding and thought you might like to see this page because it's so pretty ^_^

Fun fact: even with two-column formatting, this book ends up being 316 pages! With 4 blank pages added for padding, that would be 10 full signatures long, which would make the text block well over an inch thick when it's actually printed out and sewn together.

This is SO beautiful i'm not even kidding it brought a tear to my eye when I first looked at it. I LOVE it and I love how you're formatting the chapter headings. Also whoa, 316 pages and 10 full signatures! That's insane. I think it's hard sometimes to quantify how much you've actually written until it's printed and bound. How big are the signatures?

I would absolutely love the finished file, too!

Glad you like it! I’m trying to put a little bit of art at each chapter head, but mostly it’s just trees :P Chapter 2 just came out particularly pretty so I had to share.

As for dimensions: I’m making this as easy as possible for myself (novice binder) by making each spread fit onto standard US letter paper (8.5” by 11”). When folded in half to make signatures, each page will be 5.5” by 8.5”.

This means that it is theoretically possible to bind this thing and skip the paper trimming part, if you don’t mind the slightly saw-toothed look of uncut edges. At least the paper itself doesn’t need to be cut to size before printing!

Thanks for the response! Yeah I was assuming 8.5 x 11 was probably the easiest to avoid cutting the paper to size. I've never tried book binding but I really should since I'm sure I would find it very fun. What program are you using for layout? I've created several print products for my organization at work using InDesign, but I wouldn't say I necessarily have the same skillset to use it for a book layout since that's not what I've used it for so far.

I’m genuinely just using LibreOffice for this xD It took a little bit to figure out how to wrap my head around all of the paragraph and page style stuff, but it’s worked really well for me. And it’s free and open source :)

And I don’t do anything like this professionally either — I just looked at a lot of books and aped some of the things I liked best with their formatting. I *do* have a working knowledge of GIMP, however, which is what I’ve been using to clip, resize and cleanup the art pieces I’m using.

If you want, I can share a list of materials and a couple of tutorials for binding that I’ve found really helpful so far. Getting the document ready to print is a large chunk of the work out of the way — most of the rest is physical crafting skills (cutting, punching, sewing, gluing, measuring).

I’m not 100% sure of the genesis of the Crane Wives/Life Series marriage, but I blame the Curses animatic by chrisrin. It was certainly my first exposure to their music, and a simply iconic piece of Life Series fan art. I just discovered FirewatchAU, and spent the past few days being sucked *hard* into The Incandescence of a Dying Light. Commented on every chapter and it *still* doesn’t feel like it’s enough to express my appreciation for this fic.

It sort of felt like reading Hatchet again for the first time, except… older. TIOADL is a story that speaks to maturity, rather than to innocence. That might not make any sense, but I really did love watching FW!Grian struggle through the grieving process with a little (Ok, a *lot*) of help from Scar.

Are you OK with people rebinding it into a book for personal use? Figured I would ask directly, just in case that was a line for you. Either way, thank you for writing and sharing such a powerful piece of work.

Hello!!! Your comments have been making my week, I was always excited to see the next one in my inbox whenever you finished a chapter. I really appreciated your thoughts, you had several really mature/insightful takes about Grian’s actions and development which I enjoyed. You were really following along with a lot of what I was putting down, especially in context to all the ways grief and trauma were playing into messy interpersonal conflicts, and that is always very reassuring to see as an author.

The comparison to Hatchet makes sense! Hatchet falls into a kind of category of children's outdoorsy book I loved when I was younger that also includes things like The Call of the Wild, Island of Blue Dolphins, Boxcar Children, etc. You can actually see this explicitly in the fic's text because I reference Jean Craighead George's works. The My Side of the Mountain books have lived rent free in my head since I was a child.

To answer your question-- yes I would love that! I'm generally down for anything anybody wants to do to/for my fanfics, short of reposting them, claiming credit, or sending them directly to CCs. Several people have offered to bind it as a book in the past, but to my knowledge I don't think anyone has followed through yet, so selfishly I'm also really excited about seeing the finished product if you do make it!
