i really enjoy the idea of Coulson as Fury’s Man in the Dark

i think it works well with his Everyman persona to put him in the role of the guy moving all the chess pieces into place that Fury can’t move himself. Being the go-to guy who takes shit off of Fury’s plate and who takes care of things before they can even really touch Fury or his plans. Going places and getting his hands dirty in ways that Fury can’t, and hiding behind an unassuming veneer so that nobody looks twice at him or suspects him even doing anything at all, much less doing anything on Fury’s behalf.
