Inktober Day 31

Late post since I was out all day both on Halloween and today whoops. Buut- last doodle for Inktober! No complex meaning for this one, just wanted to play with the fact that, when hit by rain, Skeleton Flowers turn transparent.

Inktober Days 16 - 18

Doomed sapphics?? In my Halloween Eve??? It's more likely than you think.

So this one is a particular batch since the three flowers I randomized were all white and all had meanings that connected rather nicely- so I weaved them into a three part story.

Hawthorn - "Hope for love/marriage" It all starts with a wedding between two eccentric lovebirds.

Yarrow - "Cure for a broken heart" The story goes on to become a tragedy, as one of the lovers perishes before her time. Her bride does not accept this early goodbye though.

Dogwood - "Our love will overcome adversity"

To bring back her beloved, she turns to necromancy. She sacrifices half of her vitae and brings her back at least as a ghost, giving each other another chance to spend together their promised forever.

Inktober day 11 - 13

Yes, I'm completely off schedule at this point- I'm just continuing to see how many more I can do until the end of the month.

Explanations under the cut for those interested as always-

Lilac "Reminiscence in mourning" Widows often wore lilac in their hair whilst mourning a loved one. I had already fashioned a similar flower into hair (day 1) so I decided to draw a pair of pants and a cravat inspired by them instead. This gentleman is on their way to the grave of their beloved. Iris "the gift of Valor, Wisdom and Faith" The three upper petals of this flower were seen as representing those three virtues and many tales narrate about how these flowers were worn by those who were victorious. I imagined a deity to whom people pray to when in desperate need of one or more of those virtues. Belladonna "Silent threat" The Belladonna is rightfully known for its powerful poison, used to silence those who were considered obstacles. I wanted to focus on the eyes of the character, making them look like the berry of the flower and something technically cute but off putting at the same time.

Inktober Day 10 - 12

I have failed the previous 3 days and I'm a bit late with posting the rest buuut- we keep going! Needed to boost the morale though so for this batch you get my own OCs-!

I think I've already posted them but they all got a bit of a redesign so that's also a way to finally show them off again. (From top to bottom: Father Coprinus - a Shaggy Inkcap priest, Aidivni - a demon of envy, Fiore - my Flower Kid from Smile For Me :>)

Queen Anne's Lace "Sanctuary" The fronds of this flower offer protection for the smallest animals, it's also called "bird's nest" for that reason. Coprinus is a priest but most importantly a protector against demons and other malignant spirits, so I thought he'd fit the flower quite well.

Rue "Regret" More than for expressing regret, this flower was often sent as a threat as in "you'll regret what you've done". Symbolically, the piece represents the moment Aidivni fell. They stare at their reflection in remembrance of what they can now only envy.

Buttercup "Radiant with Charm" Its name comes from a children game in which a child puts a buttercup up to their chin to see if the yellow will reflect on their skin. With such a cute origin story, I decided to draw Fiore for it! Especially because of their face vitiligo that forms a lil' flower on their mouth.

can I be honest. I've always been so envious of people who just openly talk about their OCs on here because I was like. wow that's so cool but how do you do that without dying of vulnerability poisoning. and it turns out it's actually just because it rules it rules so much to have someone ask a single question about your little freak blorbo from your brain. yippee.

Inktober Day 4-6 Three more days done gee- not too sure about this one but I really love the little Dandelion witch-!

Explanation under the cut for those interested-

Nettle - "Cruelty of Misconception" This plant is often associated with cruelty due to its urticating quality. It also appears in the "The Seven Swans" fairytale from which I took the brother that received a half finished nettle tunic as inspiration for this day.

Dandelion - "Divination from Seeds" Since they're associated with fortune and wishes, I thought of a young dandelion witch that uses the seeds from her head to read the fortune of those in need. She also has a little parasol in case her glass sphere isn't enough protection against the wind.

Snapdragon - "Presumption of Deception" Ladies once worn this flowers in their hair to show that they weren't interested in advances from suitors; Snapdragons also have the peculiarity of turning into little skulls or corpse faces whenever they wilt, making them associated with Deception as well.

Inktober days 1-3

I live!!! But anyway- I decided to make my own lil' list of flowers and their various meanings and I'll design characters based on them for this inktober-! Explanation under the cut for those interested-

Hyacith- "Forgive Me for Having Feelings" Hyacinths' name seem to come from one of Apollo's deceased lovers. Here, instead, it wasn't a lover to die but the love for that beloved after having her confession rejected. It was so rough for her poor heart, it felt like a slap to the face.

Violet- "Modest poetry" It is said that Saint Valentine used crushed violet as ink for his letters while jailed. I used this as inspiration for a blind messenger whom, even while not being able to read or write her beloveds letters with her eyes, she still does so by scenting them with flowers.

Laurel- "Pyrrhic Victory" Laurel is often used to crown winners. This case is more bittersweet, as the knight lost so much in their pursuit of victory that all is left is the phantom of the eulogy they would have received.
