Matthew A. Cherry on pursuing a career in directing
S&A: What advice would have for a Black person who wants to pursue directing?
MC: My biggest mistake was probably trying to follow other people’s journey. Seeing how a lot of these directors got into directing when I was PAing, I talked to them and tried to see what they did. One of the guys went to the ABC Director Fellowship Program, so I applied to that and never got in. If you talk to 100 directors, you’re going to hear 100 different stories of how they got their shot. Some people do a big feature film and people come to them with jobs. There’s really no rhyme or reason to it. You just have to run your own race. A lot of times we get frustrated because we see other people’s accomplishments. We see them doing well and get frustrated. Just run your own race and be ready for when the opportunity comes. Just keep learning and keep growing.
this one time I got to meet Oscar nominated production designers and they told me I didn’t need no g’dmn grad school.
you’ve gotta stat romanticizing your life. you gotta start believing that your morning commute is cute and fun, that every cup of coffee is the best you’ve ever had, that even the smallest and most mundane things are exciting and new. you have to, because that’s when you start truly living. that’s when you look forward to every day.
live your life like a ghibli movie where literally everything is charming and beautiful
Good advice
I’ve felt this feeling a few times. I wish there was a word for it. It’s like bliss, but very present and relieving.
Like a couple of nights ago when I left that networking event I helped lead and it was a success. And I just felt happy.. and it was raining but it was a nice rain. And I’ve walked around that same street so many times at different stages of my life in the last few years, but this time I felt a lot more mature and successful. And then I went over to get into my Uber. I didn’t realize I was hungry. And I had an Uber driver that actually spoke to me (a lovely young woman!) and she was interesting and made 5000 rides with a 4.98 rating. I even tipped her.
That night just felt so good.
You always learn from observing. You have to pick things up nonverbally because people will never tell you what you’re supposed to know. You have to get it for yourself: whatever it is that you need in order to survive. You become strong by doing the things you need to be strong for. This is the way genuine learning takes place.

"The production designers that I’ve met are travellers, are explorers, are people who like to be challenged, people who like to understand other cultures and other people."
Do your own thing, never plan any events around other people, If you want to learn music, start hitting the gym, go travelling, do it all yourself, if someone wants to tag along, let them but don’t count on them.
here we go 2018
This pic gave me clear skin and eliminated my stress.

It’s like my dad would say: ‘You have to work twice as hard to get half as far.’ As a woman, you are presumed incompetent until proven otherwise. Whereas as a man you are assumed competent until proven otherwise. I’ve walked on to sets and been directed to extras holding. People don’t assume I’m the director. So I feel like if you see a woman in any position, you know she’s fucking 10 times better than anybody else, because she had to fight to get there.

Genius? Nothing! Sticking to it is the genius! Any other bright minded fellow can accomplish just as much if he will stick like hell and remember nothing that's any good works by itself. You've got to make the damn thing work! ... I failed my way to success.
