ok i was curious so, I did it. caveat: I only counted the deaths dean a. knew about and b. where sam was not immediately resurrected in dean presence (and other than that I think the only sam death dean doesn’t try to kill himself is swan song but he had explicitly promised sam he wouldn’t)

sam death #1: all hell breaks loose 2x21

sam dies in cold oak on april 29th, dean sells his soul on may 1st about 2 days later

amount of time between sam dying and dean killing self: 48 hours

sam death #2: dark side of the moon 5x16

sam is shot by walt/roy, dean immediately says “go ahead roy, do it.”

amount of time between sam dying and dean killing self: 30 seconds

sam death #3 (at least dean thought so): red meat 11x17

sam shot by werewolves then suffocated by corbin, there are two points I feel could be counted here immediately upon finding sam “dead” and the others beg dean to leave as the werewolves have arrived at the cabin dean simply pulls a knife and says “let them come” (likely knowing he’ll be outnumbered and outmatched and prepared for that) he doesn’t however commit to that so I’ll count him actively killing himself in the hospital I would guess 4-5 hours later

sam killed by vampires in the tunnels, after getting the refugees to the camp/finding their mom and jack dean turns around to go back for sam knowing it would likely mean his death either by vampire or being stuck in apocalypse world (they said they were about 2 days out from dayton before entering the tunnels and the camp was several miles outside of dayton so i’m gonna put it at ~36 hours)

sam tells dean he’s infected and after a very brief back a forth dean says he’s not leaving, gives the other guys the keys to the impala and says he’s going to stay and die with sam (even though neither actually die bc sam is immune neither knew that and dean, believing sam was dying, decided to die as well so I’m counting it)

on the flipside of the genre aware Dean coin I've always had this idea that sam is genre-resistant, he is oblivious or disdainful or both. I mean obviously with moments like 'you peed yourself!' or 'there aren't even words in this newspaper dean!' the joke is that he's not participating in Dean's self-conscious vaudeville act. first scene of him as an adult is him telling Jess he doesn't want to dress up for Halloween, he resists being costumed, he doesn't pick the music and all the music he is shown genuinely enjoying the joke is that it's out-of-place, too whiny or modern. his pop culture touchstones don't mesh with the show's very strict aesthetic sensibilities. also in comparison to Dean who is such a chameleon Sam is kind of allergic to pretense. like thinking abt in it's a terrible life where Dean immediately adapts to the contours of his new role vs Sam who is thrashing around like a trapped animal.
