This is very scary and concerning for black people. AGAIN DEHUMANIZING BLACK PEOPLE
Black people health conditions aren't taken seriously compared to others. Many black people are scared to go to the hospital for this reason
Black women are 4x likely to die from complications of childbirth than white women in the United states.they've had experience that has unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes
I have suffered directly because of this. I had a back injury that left me unable to walk normally for two years. I used a cane and a wheelchair to get around. At the start of my injury, my mom brought me to urgent care so we could get some help since I had been taking anti inflammatories and resting and icing my back for a week with no improvement. At this point I couldn’t stand up straight and every time I took a step, I’d yelp in pain. The doctor does the examination and every time he touched my back and tested my range of motion, I would literally scream. I was crying during the whole appointment. What does this doctor tell me to do? Just take some Tylenol. My mom asked him if it was possible for him to prescribe me something stronger and he straight up said no. My mom literally had to start BEGGING the doctor to prescribe me something stronger before he finally relented. And that’s just ONE incident.
A couple weeks later and I’m sent to try physical therapy to help my back get better. The physical therapist had me doing shit that was making me scream again. I told her what she wanted me to do seemed like it was hurting more than it should and she didn’t listen. She told me I was being dramatic. I had to quit.
I eventually was able to see a spine specialist after seeing tons of other specialists who clearly didn’t give a fuck about me (they were all white men lmaoo) and thank gods she was compassionate and listened to me. She discovered that one of the discs in my lumbar area was arthritic, herniated, and bulging out of my spinal column, causing it to pinch my sciatic nerve. I told her what happened during physical therapy and she said that because the physical therapist didn’t listen to me, she actually made my back problem worse. She caused further damage to my bad disc because she was convinced I was being dramatic. Because this spine specialist actually listened to me, she figured out that all I needed was a simple one time procedure (a steroid injection into my spine) and after having it done, I could walk normally again. I spent two years dealing with crippling pain, unable to walk and it took one quick and simple procedure to fix me, a procedure I could’ve had done at the start of my injury had the doctors I’d seen not been racist, misogynistic assholes.
I have severe trauma due to the medical neglect I suffered from thanks to those sadistic, careless doctors. I’m chronically ill and need regular healthcare but I find myself avoiding everything I need to do to stay healthy because I live in constant fear of being ignored and invalidated by the doctors who have power over me again.
The medical industry needs to be burned down and rebuilt with marginalized people at the center. Or else we are going to continue to suffer and die.
