Ominous rusting on New Utrecht Ave. in Brooklyn
Madison Avenue feels like a dignified, adult enclave, away from the nearby clamorous Manhattan avenues.
Selection from a Continental sign by my mechanic, McDonald Ave., Brooklyn (and Co, my slight reflection within the sign).
Former Fifth Avenue site of B.Shackman & Co., purveyor of old timey favors and novelties, which still exists online. You can see a complete scan of one of their old catalogs here. Some of their vintage wares are for sale on Etsy. And in further selling of old timey (-esque) stuff, this location is now an Anthropologie.
Here we have Central Engineering Supply Co., of Passaic, NJ, in business since 1919 and still apparently going strong, at least according to the existence of a website! Yes, it looks like Geocities; apparently they like to keep it vintage. Pictured in the bottom photo is me, taken unawares, making it another Co & Co double shot photo. Thanks to Subway Faces for that shot.
Another Passaic, NJ shot. See that [undetermined word] SIGN CO. peeking out up there on the brick? It's being shouted down by DOLLAR KRAZE and VALUE TOWN, but it's still there, fading away with what dignity it can muster. Call me "kraze," but that old sign wins.
Lots of faded signs in Passaic, NJ. I can't make out the one in the long horizontal factory building at lower left, but it has a Co. Is that SUPPLE CO at lower right? No, it is SUPPLY CO. Probably.
Co ~ Co in U Street, Washington DC
I made a field trip to Harlem today to witness this fascinating discovery made recently when wood paneling on the side of a building on 145th Street was removed. Behind the paneling was a time capsule of a Harlem half a century ago, including this ghost sign for a pawn shop plus remnants of paper event posters. Just think how many of these relics might be waiting, still covered up, throughout the city. Gothamist has more back story.

Old Astor Place area Paper Co. ghost sign vs New New York, NY
Extra photos provided to show it's a real place. They're not a bicycle shoppe or men's clothier being cute.
Welding co. in deepest Brooklyn
Mel's Automatic Transmissions Company, 65th Street, Brooklyn
Faded Co and clear Co, the latter sign newly revealed when a building was demolished in Downtown Brooklyn. That weird health food store has been there since the 30s. It can't be long for this world now in this prime real estate location.
