just one more alt
You play Mass Effect again and look at your list of Shepards and Ryders. Some of them have been played halfway. Some, visited and revisited like dog-eared books.
You turn to Dragon Age, and out spills a handful of Grey Wardens, several Hawkes, and so many Inquisitors that nobody would not expect them.
You glance at Fallen London. You have enough characters to form a small chorus, except you're not sure what vocal types half of them are because they are of Mysterious and Indistinct Gender, and how do vocal fachs work then?
A single bead of sweat trickles down your brow. Just one more alt, you tell yourself. Your hand quivers on your mouse.
Happy N7 Day, everyone.
Krios Vacation Memories
Thane and Kolyat in New Mexico. Originally done for @beyondthecitadelzine, feels fitting to publish for N7 day.
So the other day I realized that “Stars” from Les Misérables is all about how the stars are the embodiment of law and order and “everything in its place”.
Fucking Javert knew about the Judgments 30 years before Fallen London was even a thing.
Javert would probably be, like, the Unwavering Inspector, one of the Constables' most stalwart officers, if unexpextedly enmeshed in Neathy lore. Perhaps because he considers it necessary for his pursuit of a certain escapee from New Newgate? At any rate, he'll try to infiltrate the Calendar Council, though only getting as far as meeting the Revolutionary Firebrand before an Urchin rats him out.
More Fallen London Trivia
This is more well known than the last bit, but here’s some trivia on the origin of the semi-mysterious and repeating phrase “All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.” Now most people assume this a reference to the T.S. Eliot poem Little Gidding. This is a sensible assumption, there are a metric ton of references to Eliot in Fallen London, and his poem does contain the line a few times, if lacking two ‘all shall be well’s before the ‘all manner of thing shall be well.’ Certainly it can be analyzed and have its themes go alongside Fallen London.
Buuuuut Eliot himself was even using the line to reference someone who came well before him: Julian of Norwich, from the late 14th century, the first recorded woman author in the English language (with the associated Margery Kempe following shortly after), also notably an early adopter of using English rather than Latin to write. She was an anchoress, pretty much a person (around her time usually a woman) who led a solitary monastic life in a single room built against a church (hers was the Church of St Julian, in Norwich. Hence the name she’s given, being we have no clue what her name actually is). They were hermits, to the point that upon their anchorage there was held for them what was effectively a funeral.
Suffice to say, she was rather religious. Well, at one point she comes down with an illness. A rather intense one that had her near death. In her state she looked upon the crucifix and saw Jesus bleeding, whereupon she had 16 visions of Christ and the Virgin Mary over the next many hours. Upon waking she was miraculously cured and set to writing her visions, or revelations as she calls them, in what she titled “The Revelations of Divine Love.”
Here’s where we get to the relevant part. At one point during these revelations she dwells on sin and how horrific it is, and why god didn’t stop its creation so everyone could be “clean and like to our Lord as he made us (Julian of Norwich 68). She then continues “And then in my folly, before this time, often I wondered why, by the great foresaid wisdom of God, the beginning of sin was not letted, for then thought me that all should have been well” (68). In this questioning and sorrow though Jesus answers her, “but Jesu, that in this vision informed me of all that me needed, answered by this word and said, ‘Sin is behovely, but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well” (68). Bold mine, naturally. So it’s as simple as “why god is there sin, when we would be well without it?” “Ah, but all Will be well even with it.” She then goes on to talk of Christ’s suffering and his Passion, with mention of how she shouldn’t blame God for Sin, for God doesn’t blame her for her Sins, but rather he sweetly comforts her.
So, a promise that despite the horror caused by an action, that against questions that wouldn’t things be well without that thing, that all will still be well? That sounds…familiar.
Sometimes my education in Literature can give some nice insight into such matters as these references abound in Fallen London, so I think I might do more of these if anything more of note comes to my attention (besides the blatant ones to Eliot’s The Waste Land).
I recognise this from the Anchoress being a possible school of thought you can espouse early in the Watchful grind. But I always thought she was just a Neathy personage, not a real person! Well annotated, mate. Very eye-opening.
MA’AM THAT’S MY EMOTIONAL SUPPORT MASK
wait what
I’m pretty sure Daveed just forgot to move, which is of course fine, Anthony just improvised so he could get to his place.
This is the original for comparison
I’m crying
so i had an idea for what is possibly the most obscure but also the best crossover ever:
Fallen Ankh-Morpork.
just. Discworld and Fallen London have some surprising similarities and gods could you imagine Ankh-Morpork in the Neath
the Disc isn’t as thick as Roundworld but since the Neath already defies the Sequence i see no problem with sticking the whole thing inside some gnarly ground.
i don’t know about the intermediary three cities but the First City was Um.
Vetinari sold Ankh-Morpork to the Bazaar for a frankly ridiculous cut of the profits and a controlling share in the enterprise; the Masters were utterly dumbfounded that a human made a deal with them that wasn’t out of desperation.
this of course gave him time to order the Quirmean Canal built and rejigger infrastructure so that everything didn’t fall to shit. Moist had to manage this and was both frustrated and extremely excited.
Vimes has some lowkey ancestral urges to behead the Masters but he’s too busy, there’s still crime in the Neath.
so much crime.
at least there’s already procedures for somebody testifying at the trial of their murderer.
you don’t go to the tomb-colonies if you’re missing too many bits; you go to the tomb-colonies if you think the dead should have their own nation. Reg Shoe is involved.
Death treats the entire affair as a vacation. he takes in the sunny, or at least brightly lit, shores of the Elder Continent.
a lot of dwarf law has to be rewritten to account for the new circumstances. the moderate faction goes the way of the C of E and shrugs at everything; the extreme faction becomes the Liberation of Night.
the Masters fight a lot about whose purview troll goods are. some Masters think it’s the physical substance that counts; some think it’s what’s done with them. trolls play both sides.
trolls also get heavily involved with the iron republic and parabola. moving backwards through time lets them smash paradoxes like a brick wall.
golems and clay men chum it up; they have totally different animating forces but there’s a sense of BROTHERHOOD IN CLAY (hell both of them even speak in capital letters).
the Masters just sort of show up at the guildhalls and inveigle themselves in to minimize fuss. how well they’re received depends on the guild. Rosie Palms is Sinning Jenny.
Ankh-Morpork was the first Disc city the Bazaar took with a scientific understanding of narrativium. consequently, it finds a suitable love story for the Bazaar within a few decades.
Rincewind wins the Marvelous trying to run away from it and he decides to put Ankh-Morpork back before the Bazaar can fly away with it. you can’t get good potatoes down here for shit.
the Bazaar gets a happy ending and everyone in Ankh-Morpork decides to forget “those thirty-something years we spent in a giant cave”, except of course when people come up the Quirmean Canal to buy stuff.
Perfection. And my main FL character is based off my Discworld MUD character, and my first alt is clearly an Assassin anyway, so they'll fit in just fine.
As my third Fallen London character nears the point where she’ll likely meet this gentleman, the thought occurs: certainly someone else sees a suspicious resemblance here with a certain musical theatre personage famed for playing a certain revolutionary firebrand, also described as extremely good-looking and yet cold as ice?
I mean, look at that picture. The very first time I this card popped up with my first FL character, I immediately thought Ramin Karimloo’s Enjolras. Granted, the RF’s plotline plays out very differently, but the first impression is undeniable.
Also, in other news: yes, I’m still alive, and currently remembering that I have a Tumblr at all.
Mass Effect squadmates + Dalish vallaslin. Trying out Dragon Age, rather fascinated by the Dalish and their culture, and then the thought came to mind: if ME characters were Dalish, what vallaslin would they wear? Ergo, the crossover nobody asked for.

Happy Fourth of July, MURRICAN friends!
I’ll admit: the song is about 30% historical geekery, 30% musical geekery, and 40% me just winging it. But hey, it was fun.
(Shout-out to @redefinedbravery for their encouragement and support, and for introducing me to the wonder that is Hamilton. Without them, I can definitely say this whole project would never have even happened.)
Bonus: the meme that started it all, months upon months ago.
Perhaps always be my favourite game trailer of all time. The epic awesome levels are over nine thousand.
The music is heavenly. The mood is so joyful (but still impossibly chill). The band is multiracial (and in a video probably half a century old!). What more can one ask for?
Love both games. Seeing something merging elements of them into one thing is just awesome.
