the only super long Tumblr post I love
it wIGGLES
this is so stimmy
man, i dearly love cambridge latin course, but i really wish they gave a comprehensive lesson about slavery sooner than chapter, uh. 6
also like. i get WHY the book says that slavery wasn't race-based (although i think talking about it in those terms isn't necessarily useful given how different the romans would have thought of it than, say, a modern-day american, that's a hard thing for 11 year olds to wrap their minds around). but that often leads to a situation where my students are like oh, cool, the slavery wasn't based on race! and i have to immediately swoop in and be like YES BUT IT WAS STILL SLAVERY
like. i get it, the book is aimed at a young audience, and it's hard to teach a topic like this in an age-appropriate way (especially considering the current environment in some places when it comes to education). but at the same time i think a paragraph like this is just....
like.....you couldn't find a way to word this that didn't sound like we're talking about livestock sales?
yeah ngl that literally sounds lifted from seneca’s famous piece of advice, ‘slaves can be your friends too, no matter how surprising that may be! with some investment they may almost be people to you!’
I remember translating that in (late) high school and it was just so icky and condescending
yeah, for sure! i'm reminded of the old excellently-written eidolon article "'the slaves were happy': high school latin and the horrors of classical studies" (which discusses CLC's treatment of slavery in a lot of detail), recent empirical research into primary-school latin students' skewed ideas about ancient slavery, and work by dani bostick generally. @oudenonoma's point in the notes of this post is also great.
what's standing out to me right now is that the representation of ancient slavery in these textbooks directly follows from the ancient sources, and to be clear, that's a very bad thing. focusing on enslaved people who worked in urban domestic contexts rather than the infamously brutal mills or farms? that's in line with most of our texts. running jokes about capital punishment and the violation of enslaved women? that's straight out of roman comedy. downplaying slavery by presenting its horrors as dependent on the choices of each slaveholder? yeah, that's seneca. at every turn, the textbook writers are reproducing the normalization of slavery that occurs in the ancient texts themselves because they’re trying to get students to understand (but NOT analyze and question) how ancient people thought

oh god no sensory experience compares to playing mancala. like the little stones. the perfect wooden wells. the satisfaction of the dropping noises. it’s like heaven
i’ve seen so many ppl be like yeah i would take it out just to play by myself like wow all of us were really just sitting on the floor moving pebbles around for the thrill
Latin grammar is a social construct. The Romans honestly just made that shit up as they went along.
You know what really is a social construct? Latin syntax. Still can’t believe that like 80% of Latin’s beauty comes from the fact it has rules on word order etc. which are entirely unofficial and can be flouted at will, the Romans just decided to follow them cause they give a nice structure to the language. And when they interrupt that for effect? Sexy as hell. Bad boys be finishing a mother of a sentence with five clauses nestled inside each other in a chiastic word order, get to the main verb then plonk some noun on the end, throwing the whole thing into disarray leaving the reader reeling like WHAAAT? Human brains love patterns and I was just vibing then out of the blue WHAM! What’s that doing there? It’s like building a whole lean-to extension on the side of the Palace of Versailles. Like you show you know the rules so when you break them it’s doubly jarring. And, dear gods, the EMPHASIS that gets thrown on that outlying postpositioned noun. It’s cool. It’s punk. It’s like listening to Classic FM then switching to Planet Rock. It’s like being hugged then hit in the head with a brick. Hell yeah.
So over on Reddit this happened:
And collectively everyone was like: hey we love this tiny child, please do take him to a public candle lighting and show him the Rugrats special and here's our fave chanukah kids books and some songs and play a little dreidel and here's some kindergartner activities you can printout or color, also through the power of Jewish geography here's a potentially nearby Jewish bakery with sufganiyot stocked up for him, and also a recipe for if you want to sneak veggies into some latkes.
He's five and has permission. ADORABLE.
(and don't mind me wanting to cry because this was me at age 5 and now I'm Jewish lol)
it's time for chanukah ratings! that's right folks, here are my definitive and highly scientific ratings of various chanukah-related decorations and memorabilia I've found on the internet
starting off strong, we've got a demon-summoning menorah cake from walmart. it feels vaguely appropriate for this year considering the drama in the spn fandom right now. the wobbly menorah arms are a safety hazard. 5/10 not osha compliant.
this feels offensive and yet I instinctively feel a connection to him. I didn't need or want zeidy santa in my life but now that he's here I want him to pinch my cheek and give me a hug. 6.5/10 I took off points for that god awful tea cozy kippah
wreaths are not our thing. that's your thing. stop putting our things with your thing. 5/10 at least it's pretty
this is technically a yom kippur decoration but it has menorahs on it so it counts. it also has a shofar. what holiday is this celebrating? nobody knows. it's schrodingers holiday. 8/10 I want to hang it up in my apartment and laugh at it
this is definitely offensive. stop it. why is he strapped onto a christmas tree. also he's holding a lit candle like he's gonna throw it at a dart board. and there's an actual candle sticking out of his chest. 1/10 somebody free this poor chassid from the clutches of christian normativity.
these socks are christmas cosplaying as chanukah. problem is, I absolutely would buy and wear them. 7.5/10 what do matzah balls have to do with chanukah
oh god. oh no. please stop. a messianic made this I just know it. -493028282928/10 I hate it put it back
wholesome. simple. not trying to pretend it's jewish christmas. makes me want chocolate. 10/10 would purchase
Because I enjoy causing my mutuals pain.
you all, fools: whomst, wheremst, whymst
plautus, wise and enlightened:
hello! hello! hello! hello!
I think about this meme every single day
Pour it out by MissThunderkin
Christians (specifically Protestants): we have little versions of our sacred text that we carry around in our pockets to pull out if we encounter something and want guidance. The version used during sermons and in church are the same ones that we carry with us
Jews: you can read the torah and Tanakh in a normal book if you want. But if you want a torah you can use as a congregation? *cracks knuckles* you must prepare paper made from the skin of a kosher animal and special ink and a quill made from a turkey feather and you must use no metal in the preparation process because metal is used in the creation of weapons for war and before you even think about actually started to write you must take The Holy Bath to purify yourself and ritually blot out the name of Amalek, the sworn enemy of the Jewish people and every time you write the name of god on the scroll you must say it out loud and recite a special prayer and if you mess up one letter you have to start over and when the scroll is finished you must wrap it in tapestries and pretty cloth and shit and then put little crowns on the end and then put it in a Super Special Box in the synagogue so every time it’s time to read it you can open the Super Special Box and everyone can gawk at the Ultra Big Boy Important Text and the words of god within the scroll. this entire process takes about a year to complete and is done by special sofer’s that devote their lives to making Torah’s specifically and when you read from the torah you must use a little tiny pointer in the shape of a hand so your hands don’t mess up the paper. Oh, you think I kid? You think I jest?
Think again.
(rb encouraged for everyone. Share the sacred baby hands with the goyim. Everyone deserves to know about the sacred baby hands)
Finished my LOTR Studio Ghibli crossover finally... cant wait to do some other scenes!!
