My cat is great.

Do you have any writing experience (as in, previous books or even fanfic) or did you one day decide to write the Sir Cameron book and suddenly became an author?

(What I'm trying to say is, has your writing talent been lying dormant this whole time or was it just your first *professionally published* book?)

oh boy!

so when I was a kid, my favourite author was Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. she wrote her first professional novel at 14, and my thinking was, I needed to do that, because if my fourteenth birthday passed and I hadn't published a book, I'd be an irredeemable failure.

anyway. many years later, after many horrible unfinished novels, and many horrible short stories, and shelves full of books like YOUR FIRST DRAFT and 50 FIRST PAGES, I finally finished a manuscript. and managed to sell it!

I get how from an outside perspective it looks like I just wrote a book on a whim, but in actuality I am standing on a mountain of my own failures. it's just that the heap finally got tall enough for me to actually get anywhere

that's why I got so frustrated when I saw someone say "Greer's risographs are beautiful, but they suck at writing", because it's like....... my illustrations were shit for many, many years before I hit the skill level to illustrate professionally.

and at several points while I was learning how to paint and draw, I had PROFESSORS bluntly tell me "you're not good at this. you're not skilled enough. if people bought a book that included your illustrations, they'd be mad about the quality." and if I'd listened to any of them and stopped, I would've never have reached where I am today, where even the people who dislike me have to begrudgingly admit that I draw good.

tl;dr give yourself the grace to suck at shit, and give the finger to anyone who tell you to stop.

One thing I’ve become a real extremist about is little girl’s clothing and hair styles because if your kid can’t get her hair wet, hang upside down, climb over a fence or run full out in the outfit/hair she is currently wearing then why not? And the answer better be both extremely fucking good and describe something temporary.

Hope you don't mind a story that also made me extremist about this issue.

Took my friends daughter (2.5yrs) to the park. Dressed her in practical clothing that's ok to get stained, brought an extra change of clothing. She sat in the mud at the water bank and played with rocks and mud. A little girl came over, couldn't be more than 3yrs. She was looking longingly at my friend's daughter. She has her hair in a perfect style and she's wearing a pretty dress with white socks and dressy shoes. The parents say "Sweetie don't go into the mud, you'll get your dress dirty" and pull her away, while giving me a judgmental look as they see the kid in my charge covered in mud and throwing rocks into the water. It felt really weird, like we saw eachother as aliens with completely different ideas on how to raise children. When my friends daughter was done playing, changed her into clean clothing and went back home. She had a lot of fun at the park and a day full of nature and play. The other little girl kept her dress clean.

Fully agree with all the sentiments brought up. Little girls shouldn't have to be perfect porcelain dolls that are never allowed to be human and messy and find immense joy in whatever form of play resonates with them most.

Children in general should be treated as tiny human beings worthy of full respect and consideration, and having their desires heeded as much as possible. Especially with play and artistic endeavors. Of course they need help remaining safe, that's a given. But again. Girls are not dolls to be played with by adults and simply used for dress up.

the thing is, im always interested in The Paperwork. whenever The Characters moan and groan about The Paperwork and whenever it's left unspecified what The Paperwork entails i go aw... The Paperwork... u dont deserve this attitude, The Paperwork... im sure you're very interesting and important... this is because i like my job at The Paperwork factory and because i like homework and it's also because The Characters often hold positions of power attained through superhuman abilities and enforced with violence and i know that The Paperwork is there, aspirationally, to document their actions and protect people. from institutional neglect and from The Characters. when The Characters ignore The Paperwork to fuck each other on The Desk i think less of them for it. i do.

i made this post offhandedly, but resentment/dismissal of The Paperwork is a trope from procedural fiction and commercial sff that is really really common in fanworks bc it makes for an easy shorthand when u don't want to research or invent the details of a job, and i do seriously want to ask everyone to get skeptical of it. it's part of a broader narrative type of the ultra-talented Maverick, usually law enforcement or pseudo law enforcement (e.g. a monster hunter, a status-quo-enforcing time traveler, a man in black, a moral mercenary, etc.), whose ability to police the boundaries of Civilization ("normal," defined by hegemony, Flawed But Worth Preserving!) and protect a homogenous Public (white, heteronormative, bourgeois, documented, "law-abiding," "innocent," helpless!!) is limited not by his energy or ability, but by forces (small-minded, foolish, persnickety, overcautious, sexless, dull, effeminate!!!) of Overhead, from whence comes... The Paperwork.

The Paperwork might be generated by administrators, journalists, lawyers, judges, civilian oversight committees, the village elders or the intergalactic legislature, depending on the story. and who benefits from us telling each other stories that belittle & villainize those professions while lionizing The Maverick? "if only The Maverick were given unlimited resources, unlimited access, unlimited privacy in his operations, and unlimited use of excessive force, he would be able to protect The Public (and find love! maybe on The Desk)." you see it, right? this is how copaganda will get in your head.

fun story: my mom is actually the one who made the sign. she was in town for our baby shower and we were laughing about the "no boys allowed" sign and she was like "wait, hold on," switched the letters around, and voila! son boy allowed.

she used to work at a university library. her job was mostly helping students learn how to access and utilize the online resources held by the library. she was helping a student get into their account once and needed to know their password. when the student told her the pw was "son boy allowed" my mom, who is not hip to queer meme culture, said, "oh! do you know my daughter?"

and that's how she learned her silly joke was legendarily famous in certain online circles.
