my creative writing course told me to make this on page 11

I know there's a lot of particularly lady blorbo feelings in the realm of "she wouldn't like kids" as a response to the easy, sometimes lazy tie up of "blorbo has kids and is a great mother" but consider the other options of:

She likes kids! But doesn’t want kids, and so doesn't have them.

She doesn't like kids broadly, but she does like hers.

She's an awful fucking mother who never should have had kids who didn’t like or want them but had them anyway.

She desperately wanted to have children but it didn't work out.

She didn't have kids or particularly want them but she's a good stepmother.

So many options that vary in domesticity but aren't a black and white "loves/wants/has kids vs hates/doesn't want/doesn't have kids".

I know all of these women by the way! The feelings around this can be much more complex! This isn't even me arguing against your blorbo hating kids it's just 'noooooo don't buy into a false binary you're so sexy!"

hmm. gotta think about my ocs for this one...

- Oliver, likes kids. But was also super parentified from a young age, got given way to much responsibility, and as a result of this, ends up going into adulthood whilst being extremely burnt out. I could see him bei g an amazing step dad, later on...

- Amy... would probably want to work through her own issues with family first, before considering adoption. She's easily irritated by a lot of people, but kids are one of the exceptions because she feels like she cant blame them,even when they annoy her, because she used to he considered a "problem child" herself

- OR scenario B: Amy gets a surprise baby and this is the reason she has to start working through her family issues. If she kept it, I think shed be quite a protective parent who takes her kid very seriously, because her parents not believing her when she told them about her trauma when she was younger.

- I could definitely see Amy and Oliver definitely discussing adoption. I dont know what they'd decide, though.

- I think James could adopt/foster. very spontaneously, because "this kid doesnt have anyone else". He would definitley have a bit of a crisis about it later when the reality hits him, and would most likely end up phoning Evie up in the middle of the night. She reassures him, and when that doesnt work, shows up at his door a few hours later with lots of packed bags and julian in tow.

- Julian would loooove being the fun relative! I think he most enjoys entertaining a baby by making a funny face at it, or taking a kid on a fun day out at a fair or something. but I could see her having some deep convos with James's kid, too. partly due to Julian growing up in a foster home, they're willing to listen rather than dismiss.

- Evie doesnt mind kids, and is pretty open to the idea of having them with Julian, but ultimately I think she'd much prefer just being a cool auntie to James's kid. also, the idea of childbirth has always horrified her a little, and shes always known that she definitely doesn't want to have biological kids if it means being pregnant.

guys I made two more of my ocs on a picrew!! :D

one on the left is Oliver (he/him… for now) and one on the right is Julian (he/she/they)

you can’t see in the final pic, but it’s important to me that you know that Oliver has the ‘heart of etheria’ (from Shera) tattoed on his chest, becuase he wanted to get a tattoo and he has some good memories of watching Shera with his two sisters (it was the only thing they liked to watch when they were younger, and he ended up begrudgingly enjoying it too).

both Julian & Oliver have scars on their arms from self harming. Julian’s are quite faded, and they don’t really care as much about other people seeing them. Oliver does care about people seeing his scars, so he tends to stick to wearing long sleeves, and he also has some pretty bad burns on his hands which are a lot harder to hide (but he will sometimes wear gloves to cover up when going out/meeting new people).

letting myself have a fandom moment here, please forgive me. like. when I'm interested in a fictional relationship, I'm interested in the dynamic between them and interested in how a romantic aspect could change or REVEAL further aspects of their dynamic. the want for that relationship to be romantic comes from a place of engaging w the plot of the story and the personalities of the character. it has never come from a place of "I want these characters in a healthy monogamous relationship with one another where they get married and have kids together" like ur all out of ur mind for this

when you get crazy enough about The Character you'd think the situations you imagine them in would get more elaborate and lore intensive. but no. imagining my wizard pacing around huffily being slightly peeved at a mild inconvenience. I don’t even know what the inconvenience IS. and it's giving me enough joy to power a city for a month

okay, so one thing about oliver is that part of his character development is shown through cooking!

being parentified at a young age means that he has to make all the meals, despite never really being taught how. this means that he sees food only as something required for functioning. he hates shopping for groceries, because it means counting up coins and deciding what food is a priority and what to go without. to him, it's all just a stress.

some of it is having to convibce his sisters to eat stuff (they are both picky eaters at that age) and not letting his frustration show when he's around them. aka bottling it up. also he has some quite bad burns on his hands from grabbing something hot out of the microwave - and because no one explained to him that you should hold burns under cold water.

but then I think cooking could also be a way he learns how to heal. I think that he resents his aunt at first, for kind of coming into their life when he's around 16/17 and taking over all the adult responsibilities. but I think one way that he and his aunt manage to connect is by prepping food together. her side of the family are reform jews, so maybe she has some more cultural recipes that she's able to teach him.

I just think when his life becomes a bit more stable later on, it might turn into almost a hobby instead of a chore. I think he'd enjoy baking more than cooking, mainly because it isnt as necessary; it's just making something nice for the sake of making something to share with others.
