you might find this blog becoming abandoned soon because this website is becoming unbearable for me to visit. as the overtly bigoted staff/moderation team keeps banning more and more users users and only the miserable, gangstalking, transmisogynistic, racist, pedantic fandomite fucks remain, the culture is rapidly deteriorating to an untenable point for me.

audio busted straight out the gate literally the worst echo I have ever heard on a livestream. took them about 10 minutes to actually look at the chat and realize this. activities included an otomatone version of the song from their tour from almost a decade prior (mind you I didn't even know the song at this point) and they fucked up the audio again so it was completely unlistenable lmfao I had to actually mute it until the torture ended. another activity was smash or passing pokémon (Dan's 1000 decibel scream from the topped by kakuna moment was instantly seared into my brain) halfway through which the camera died because they forgot to charge it (?????????) and we were just looking at a black screen with fucking clefable or some shit with "smash or pass" underneath it while Dan fought off a panic attack trying to fix the camera (he was actually so nervous on that stream it was making me nervous) and then they finally get a decade-old camera "working" with a white rectangle on the video feed which they can't get rid of and then promptly start shaving off each other's eyebrows with an amount of homoerotic touching so sincere and extreme that I had to avert my eyes. almost set their house on fire and then they didn't even know how to end the stream

and somehow this absolute train wreck raised over $100k for charity, the view count never really dropped at any point (20 thousand-odd people were SAT THERE looking at a fucking black screen with dan in the background muttering "where the FUCK is the cable oh my god I'm gonna kill myself" like "FINALLY some good fucking entertainment") and the entire time they have a close friend who is a professional twitch streamer who offered to help them with their setup but they said no. i laminated my dan and phil stan card on that day. nobody is doing it like them for better or worse

anyway our only path forward is community and radical optimism. there is a whole world out there of people trying to do something about it. you cannot succumb to doomerism and scrolling. and while distractions like dan and phil being gay on a podcast are important and, for some people, the only respite they have, we cannot lose sight of real genuine hope. i appreciate dnp wanting to be a source of comfort for people who need it but the work doesn’t begin and end there!

agree fully with the first point, it is actually insane it took them an entire year to talk about the violent anti trans legislation in their own country. and even then they couldn’t address it without somehow making it about cis people.. that is kinda wild 💀💀💀 and yeah there is a broader point about how the societal concept of a “woman” is inextricable from patriarchal eurocentric beauty standards in a way that is weaponized against trans women, but also against anyone else who doesn’t fit into that standard… but time and place. and they did it at my birthday dinner because they are kinda incapable of not putting their foot in their mouth

i feel like part of why it comes across as empty platitudes or vague liberalism is because they’re scared of getting too specific? like if they’d had a longer conversation about trans rights and the way trans women in particular are treated in the uk, then there could’ve been a place for a comment like that. but they’re scared to get too far into it beyond a vague statement so it comes across feeling hollow. idk.

i joined the phandom right before they did several fundraisers for palestine at a time when a lot of creators were scared to even touch the topic with a 10 foot pole, and maybe that gave me the wrong idea because i guess i thought they were actually about that life. i really respected them for that. but ever since then they’ve kinda given nothing. so yeah i guess maybe i just have unrealistic standards and i need to accept they’re unserious youtubers at the end of the day 😭

and yeah i know it's easy for me to talk about community when i haven't suffered the kind of invisible violence they've suffered and needed to be extremely isolated to survive. i don’t know what it’s like to be stalked and scrutinized like they have. but that’s why i’m saying it and not them LMAOOO and i think it can be a small thing, protesting isn’t the be all end all of activism. even just getting some people together to pick up trash in your neighborhood or asking your elderly neighbor if they need help mowing the lawn. and i know it comes from trauma, but it fundamentally does not sit right with me that dnp are so allergic to any kind of actual praxis, because we do in fact have the power to change these patterns and that’s what radical optimism is rooted in. rather than just “waiting for all the old people to die” like oh my goddddddddddd

#the accessibility in activism thing is very overlooked tbh #not just physical accessibility but also i tend to find that #most groups are run by high functioning people with fairly secure housing and jobs #and not living with severely stigmatised mental health diagnoses #which means it is very easy for ableism to take hold of these places #accusations of laziness/not willing to try/needing to get over yourself abound in these places #and sure getting over your mild social anxiety by doing boots on the ground work can be very helpful #but work where people have to keep watch for police activity is not going to be great for people with paranoid or schizoid symptoms #not going to go too in depth abt my own experiences bc privacy but i did leave my prev group bc the ableism was so persistent and insidious #and im 100% sure those people think of themselves as not ableist and in fact some would even call themselves disability activists #but the base amount of commitment expected by many groups is outrageous bc they are run by mostly abled 20somethings who are going to #be office drones in seven years #i mean im just rambling now and this has nothing to do with dnp anymore #but that attitude of You're In Or You're Out + not making an effort to recruit disabled/mad/impoverished ppl is something im v weary of now #anyway good convo im going to watch dan and phil play am i gay quiz now soz for being verbose xxx

the lack of specificity is definitely part of the problem and yeah i do fear a portion of that is just that they probably feel incredibly surveilled and are so hesitant to say something wrong that they end up being too vague in the other direction. and i mean, to be honest, seeing as they are mostly on twitter, a website literally engineered to only give you the worst of the worst or the most sycophantic bootlicking possible, that is not necessarily untrue for them :/

i've been here since like 2011/2012 and i was really pleasantly surprised by their palestine fundraisers! they are generally extremely shy about politics and try to remain uncontroversial so i do think the fact they did it at all shows that fundamentally their hearts are in the right place. but i think they have had such strange and fucked-up lives that it's going to take ages for them to feel comfortable dishing potentially controversial opinions. also considering that the establishment media in the UK (which they still work with/in from time to time and probably have connections with that they don't want to completely and utterly fuck to shit) are strenuously transphobic to the point of it distorting to other countries how the UK public actually feels about trans people, i can understand that they wouldn't want to say like, "let's string up wes streeting and let the fish in the thames graze on his corpse" or whatever.

personally i'd be more inclined to prefer that if they're not going to be bold they don't say anything at all, or really do keep it to platitudes or interpersonal appreciation for trans ppl instead of trying to be political about it and failing miserably lol, but i can also see that other fans including UK based ones find the mere addressing of it very comforting. i do find it touching that people can find so much solace in them doing that in the end. i think i'm naturally cynical and politically aggressive but maybe also a bit traumatised from being trans+other things in this world and therefore kind of incapable of appreciating that stuff the way other people can 🥲

and yes i think dan would profit immensely from joining a Bash Back or Just Stop Oil or even XR group indeed. though i don't know that there'd be an option for him to do so relatively anonymously and well, you know, the british tabloid press absolutely hate gay people and they hate activists even more and if you put those two factors together with being a public figure you can bet your mother's grave on it that they'll hound you down for the rest of your days, so i understand that he'd be hesitant about it even if he could cast aside his depressive-anxious approach to life long enough to try it 😭. again i think the individualism is likely due to all the social isolation he's been thru + probably looks larger than it is because of the lack of specificity + he loves a slogan like i can't wait for these old fucks to die lmao.

i hope for both their own sakes that there'll be a point where they feel comfortable getting involved on the ground and maybe talking about what it's like for them. because one thing i do think they have influence over is normalising things to their audience of millions and it would be really cool if local activism could be one of those things. though again, they'd never be able be get too specific about what they do because insane people would doxx them about it probably

okay well fucking excuse me but 1) marginalised groups are entitled to be sad about being constantly systemically mistreated and 2) saying that times are tough for us right now is not fucking "doomerism"! that is recognising that there are powerful forces within the british (esp. English) political and public spheres right now who are making significant progress towards their endgoal of eradicating trans people entirely! i think we should take that problem fucking seriously and get real mad about it so we can actually do something about it!

just because i think it's worth treating with severity and honesty doesn't mean i think it's a lost cause, i think we should take it extremely seriously because it's NOT a lost cause. we will not fucking prevail if we cannot be cognisant of the undeniable fact that we're currently living in a profoundly stifling moment of political backlash towards racial justice, lgbtq+ and women's rights. we cannot win that fight if we cannot acknowledge that it's going to be a hard one. it will require dismantling entire geopolitical constructs and it's unlikely that will happen within my lifetime. that doesn't mean we give up, it means we do our part.

if we are choosing to be optimistic and positive despite the current moment that means the current moment is pretty shit. there is no point or radical energy in choosing to be hopeful if you can't admit that it's a difficult and active choice you're making every day, if hope for the future is resistance that means you're acknowledging that feeling hope for the future can be so hard that choosing to have hope anyway is radical, and if that is a radical choice it means the present is a dark and depressing moment.
