I had the chance to get in front of Nick Farr from @winebyfarr yesterday to taste the new releases. It was great to get the opportunity to ask loads of questions as we tasted the wines. Without blowing smoke the wines are phenomenal (no surprise), a standout on the day was the 2018 Viognier. On tasting I cannot understand why more people don’t drink it. My two picks from the day we’re the 2018 Chardonnay IMHO it’s the best Chardonnay Nick has ever made. Don’t be surprised if it disappears. The 2017 Farrside Pinot Noir is phenomenal, 2017 was a cracking vintage across Victoria but I think it was the year for Farr Pinot Noir. The Farrside is an exercise in layers, layers of fruit, layers of flavour and layers of complexity. An amazing wine that is just getting started. I found my winter Pinot! The @shinywinetas Little Shiny Pinot Noir 2018. What a wine! Probably the best Pinot I’ve had from Tamar in a couple of years. Big call, but this wine rocks. FAAARK what a wine...Light to deep purple in colour, with a nose of mulberries & plums, sweet spice and meaty chocolaty notes. A really opulent nose. Some stemmy notes come through but that is part & parcel of wholebunch pressing. On tasting I swore, it is that good. Opulent, rich, lush loads of blue fruit (think blueberries & plums) backed by meaty charcuterie flavours and chocolate. It would not be difficult to call this a Pinot Noir for Cool Climate Shiraz Drinkers. The back end evolves into red plums then distinct sour cherries. Tannins are completely absent and acids are so well integrated. This wine has phenomenal length. Winter has arrived but I’m trying to ignore it by enjoying some @clementine_provence Coeur Clementine Rosé 2018. What a glorious wine, if anything makes me think happy summery thoughts it’s this. Prices have gone up since the first vintage but at $30 it still punches above its weight. My notes: Light copper in colour with a nose of Oranges, light florals, orange pith, pepper & confectionary. The palate is a celebration of Oranges, candied orange and raspberries. Acids are slightly prominent contributing to a good texture and long finish. Great wine, a great example of great Provençal Rosé. Finally found a savvy I like! Thanks to my reading glasses being otherwise occupied on my desk...I thought this was a 2016, no a 2006. Really interesting wine that you could really climb into. Big ass Slovenian oak some skin contact and a bit of Oxy handling making for a savvy that still retains good fruit after 13 years but has a slightly “fino-esque” tang to it. This is Amarone! Not the usual depth of purply black often found in this King of Wines: Corte Lavel Amarone della Valpolicella 2013 $95 This wine offers serious competition to any Amarone priced between $100-$200. Really light in colour totally unexpected for an Amarone, presenting a nose of black plums, some smoky oak notes coupled with medicinal herbaceous notes. The palate again offers a rich depth of complexity, black plums coupled with dark cherries and raspberries. Really fresh and bright the fruit is still very primary and acids hidden, tannins are so so fine. This is a really fresh bright example of Amarone, totally unexpected but totally awesome you should try this wine if you want to see what Amarone is all about...or try it’s sibling the Corte Lavel Valpolicella Ripasso. A cracking tasting today with @darren_rathbone and the latest lineup from @xanaduwines. These wines are exquisite and seriously punch above their weight. The real hit of the day was the Xanadu DJL Chardonnay 2017, banana and citrus nuttiness on the nose followed by and amazingly textural and opulent stone fruit palate. Completely in balance. If you are a Margaret River Chardonnay fan this is hard to go past at $24 per bottle. The rest of the line up were nothing to sneeze at either, the Exmoor wines are serious contenders at $20. The Xanadu DJL 2016 still the best Australian Bordeaux Blend I can point to at this price point. $24. Another day another @aphelionwine to taste. I am a very happy camper. If anyone remembers I raved about the 2017 vintage and then Rob went off and collected Young Gun of Wine 2018, clearly I wasn’t the only one impressed! This vintage is better so if you love amazing Rhine blends get your hands on this one. My notes: @aphelionwine The Affinity. GMS 2018 Blueberry and mulberries coupled with violets, savoury notes, chocolate & Vanilla. Soft and supple, completely mouth filling. Refreshing acid and the tannins are imperceptible (again!). The palate delivers plums, chocolate, meaty flavours and bucket loads of blue fruit and blackberries at the very end. Great finish. This is a step up again from the 2017 vintage, Rob has certainly delivered.
