Swift was the spear that cut through the air, meeting its mark with the precision only eagle eyes could posses. The takedown wasn’t splendid, just a wobble and a thud that reminded them of the bloatflies they would sometimes sling with pebbles back at home when they were young. In their boredom it was a break of monotony and their current ‘enemy’ vanquished the recruits erupted into cheers, patting their David on the back with gusto as if his kill had been a Goliath.

Their ruckus eventually settled down to giggles and muffled snorts, with the youngest three removing themselves from the main group to see what exactly has been the thing they had downed.

It was no bloatfly.

They rolled it on the dust with the tip of their boots and poked at it with the sharp edge of their spears.

Pre-war junk.

That should have been the end. Downed and then abandoned to rust out in the desert sands and heat until some caravan or wanderer with better appreciation for tech came by, but of course Ed-E was fortunate, or rather, perhaps, more rightly unfortunate as this small chapter in his story soon revealed, for already with their backs on him one eventually turned back, hoisting it out of the ground and back to their current camp. And so, Ed-E eventually found his way into the fox’s hands.

(A couple of loose sensor modules back in place was all that was required to get it beeping again.)

ED-E had not been prepared for the spear. Or the sensor modules going offline. And then falling.

Was the last noise ED-E made before crashing to the ground and going offline. How much time had been spent offline was difficult to tell when the eyebot started up again.

Sensors came back on slowly and begun to scan the area. It was all unfamiliar though.

ED-E had drifted a little bit ahead of Blinkie, hovering just at shoulder height and hadn’t been expecting the touch. But the hug was definitely not unwelcome, even if the Eye-bot couldn’t return it.
