You’ve heard of woolly mammoths, but what about woolly tapirs? 🤔Also known as the mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque), this species can be found in the cloud forests of South America’s Andes Mountains. Adults can weigh up to 400 lbs (182 kg), and their thick fur coats help insulate them from the cold temperatures of their habitat. Unfortunately, this endangered species is threatened by human activity including hunting and deforestation.

came in third in the “costume wars” competitions while dressed as a giant mecha for bugs (go team Old Sew and Sews) (every team is given a bunch of almost-garbage and you have like an hour and a half. I got to be the model.)

Explained my “evil treatment plan” method of developing book plots

Attended a nerd burlesque show

Had a book signing

Attended a panel on OSHA violations in Star Trek

Explained the political history of the local con scene to a curious newcomer who requested my “Ted talk”

Watched a hord of children destroy a cardboard city we helped build last night

In a shocking twist of volunteer-run logistics, 1st place and 3rd place winners of the "costume wars" competition were swapped in the closing ceremony! Justice for The Old Sew-And-Sews! We will not be accused of winning 1st place!

My mum has to drive over the Millau viaduct every time she visits me, and the other day I was in the car with her and said we should stop to take a picture, and she said, Must we. And I said, Come on! it’s the tallest bridge in the world. And she just wouldn’t believe me. It’s too familiar to be special… She was like, surely the tallest bridge in the world would be somewhere else. Not between my house and yours.

Today I learned that cuttlefish experience REM sleep, and that it makes their skin flash random colors. This is the cutest thing ever.

The electric eel at my aquarium has a voltmeter attached to his tank, and whenever he pumps out a burst of electricity–either when he’s navigating his tank or getting fed–the meter lights up and makes noise. Sometimes, I’ll walk past him when he’s snuggled up and totally motionless on his log, and see the voltmeter going crazy.

I am left to assume that he is dreaming, and is sleep-zapping at the things in his dreams.
