Value study of Mysterious Skin (2004)
Genre Deconstruction / Coming of Age / Adolescent Sexuality
“Two pre-adolescent boys both experienced a strange event and later it affects their lives in different ways. One becomes a reckless, sexually adventurous prostitute, while the other retreats into a reclusive fantasy of alien abduction.” (IMDb)
For fans of small town settings, shoegaze soundtracks and angsty coming of age stories
I think a lot of people reasonably advertise this movie as some legendary artsy shock film that’ll SCAR YOU FOR LIFE, but there’s honestly very few movies that have hit me as hard as this one. It’s such a raw exploration of sexuality and growing apart from your childhood self and the isolation that comes with it, which I definitely feel now that I’ve come back home after college and have also just reflected on my religious upbringing.
In terms of writing, the way that it handles its subject matter in the most gruesome detail without also reducing its characters to mere caricatures that just wallow in the story’s misery prevents this movie from being another one of those “aesthetic” movies where absolutely nothing happens and characters just walk around a city and smoke cigarettes and cry and scream (even if there’s honestly a lot of nothing scenes in this movie too xD). It masterfully repurposes the theatrical angst of the typical coming of age movie to appropriately and honestly show how the two main characters deal with their trauma.
I kinda had this value study sitting for a while and told myself I’d finish it later but i decided to just give up instead
Charlotte Saint-Saëns—Heartswarm Academy’s resident bully. I swear she thinks she can just step all over people just because she’s the headmaster’s daughter…
For a Shoujo Comic I'm currently writing... more on that in the future

Nine Moods by Nastyona is a theatrical masterpiece
watching miraculous ladybug in ~2 weeks when i got covid was prolly the most fun i had watching anything in a long time, its peak
The best worst show of all time
The MCR -> Malice Mizer pipeline is so real
Revolutionary Girl Utena explores relationships, affection and gender so thoroughly without ever sacrificing an ounce of clarity.
This show will probably forever stand as a model for the type of stories I want to write. It truly shows respect both to its characters and its audience and it shows you can always be more honest than you think. I often challenge myself in that way as I intend to make my own comics/stories
Listening to this band sophomore year of college just had me wishing I knew of them in high school...
Also strangely enough listening to them helped me get back into vkei LOL lowkey they are an american version of vkei tho
Mother 3 made me cry in 8th grade, still one of my favorite stories ever. One of the few technology vs nature stories with respect for its characters and its audience
I watched one episode of Samurai Champloo every night before bed, never more, on youtube when i was in high school what a good boy i was
Another old piece... Chainsaw Man will forever have a special place in my heart even if I kinda lost interest as Part 2 went on.
I'd cite it as the story that really made me want to take drawing seriously, it showed me that not all manga have to lean back on filler or cringe tropes and they can just instead rely on a good story that respects both its own characters and also its audience.
Its brand of writing isn't just one of a kind for the medium but for all mediums. Also reading about Fujimoto inspired me to watch a ton of movies so I could get inspired to write my own stories too.
Not to mention the art style is deceptively simple like I really saw the art and competely believed one day I could draw like Fujimoto (I lied to myself)
I remember getting spotify premium free week trial in 8th grade so i could listen to demon days live while i waited for my mom in the car, good times man ;-)
