the thing about John referencing tumblr memes is like. They don’t have the internet post resurrection. Which means John has been making the same handful of jokes for like ten thousand years. I too would become mercymorn if I had to hear the same ten jokes for TEN THOUSAND YEARS PLUS
"Do you have a specific inquiry, Shepard?"
edi
straight people: i love you.
gay people: strike me down. you’ve won. i’ve lived my whole wretched life at your mercy, yours alone, and God knows i deserve to die at your hand. you are my only friend. i am undone without you.
ianthe: harry can't POSSIBLY love you, nav; she lobotomized herself to forget about you! to love is to remember!
not five pages earlier: gideon waxing poetic about how harrow tenderly wrapped gideon's sunglasses (that harrow allegedly hated btw) and sealed them tightly in an envelope for eight months on the OFF CHANCE gideon came back in some way shape or form
gideon: yeah seems legit. i mean she didn't even seem happy when i died for her so like.
Cunk on the Reaper War
PC: (voiceover) For millenia, the galaxy has considered the Prothean Empire to be the peak of civilization. However, as they did not develop Belgian techno duo Techtronica's 1989 hit "Pump Up the Jam," this seems dubious.
(The entirety of the music video for "Pump up the Jam" plays uninterrupted)
PC: (voiceover) Commander Shepard has been unifying leader in the war effort, despite not receiving any promotion over the past three years. I spoke with one of the many men who has been relying on her underpaid labor to boost their own success.
(Interview room)
PC: So Mr. Victus, you're a primarch.
AV: that is correct.
PC: Can I return this sweater with you?
AV: I'm sorry?
PC: I tried at the location on the Citadel, but they said I couldn't get a full refund anymore. Just store credit.
AV: … when did you buy it?
PC: last August.
AV: why didn't you return it before now?
PC: Dunno. Busy.
AV: I guess I'll see what I can do.
There's a question which the west coast Fallout games are quietly litigating, which is that age-old gotcha about what you do with the remaining orcs once you've deposed Sauron. In the original Fallout, the Super Mutants are basically universally aligned against the quote-unquote "good guys," for whatever value of that term is applicable to the wasteland at large, but subsequent games make it clear that this was an ideological thing, and a product of the political moment of the mutants creation rather than an ontological quality that they have. The game is very aware that this is something that was done to them, and the tragedy of that; the first mutant you're likely to run into is dying scared and alone.
Fallout 2 presents super mutants who've broken in every direction ideologically in the aftermath of the Unity's collapse; the peacemakers under Marcus at Broken Hills, Gond as a member of the abolitionist NCR rangers, reactionary remnants of the original mutant army, genocidal self-hating fascists like Frank Horrigan. Fallout: New Vegas iterates on this beautifully. The mutants dovetail perfectly with the theme of how every faction in the wasteland is trying and oftentimes failing to reckon with the weight of history. Their utopian movement imploded outside of living memory, closer to the apocalypse than to the present day. The survivors- who can only dwindle in number due to their sterility- have been left to reckon with that in whatever way they can. And they have their backs to about a hundred and twenty years of that reckoning not going particularly well, of being the bugbear and boogeymen for bullies and ideologues whose grandparents weren't even alive to suffer from the Unity's actions. The lack of a collective future for mutantkind casts a pall over even the best ending for Jacobstown; humans are collectively resilient within this setting, but through violence, and accidents, dementia and senility, the day will inevitably come when there are no mutants left. And worse still will be the day before that, when there's only one mutant left. Finding some form of satisfaction or contentment within that dwindling window, with the world against you, is a task that falls to the individual mutant. (Take Mean Sonovabitch, for example. He seems to be doing alright for himself.)
Then we slide on over to the east coast games, where the mutants are.... morons. Cannibals. Marauders. And when you meet one who isn't, the game throws itself a ticker-tape parade for containing such an audacious twist. To go back to the orc thing, it's like if The Hobbit had contained a lengthy, empathetic subplot about the rich internality and fleshed-out-if-deeply-flawed ideology of the orcs, and then there was a pivot to treating them like a monolithic block of ontologically evil marauders in LOTR. While staring you straight in the eye the whole time, unblinking. Daring you to say something
To be fair about the east coast super mutants, there was no master. The ones in the commonwealth dont even come from the same place as the ones in DC. There's also no guarantee it was the same strain of FEV that mutated the Richard Gray, and anyway, Fallout 1 implies that the majority of mutants created by the master were "stupid". Most of them weren't highly intelligent like the Lieutenant or Marcus. I get where you're coming from, but I also the FO3 mutants are a little more nuanced than people give the game credit for. They cant reproduce, so the only way they can make more mutants is to mutate people by dipping them in FEV, but they don't have unlimited amounts of FEV, and they think it comes from vaults, naturally, since thats where they came from, so they try to find vaults looking for FEV to continue their species, not realizing its failed endeavor, another tragedy created by vault tec's experiments.
I know we've said it so many times before but James at the beginning of ME3 is a new witness to everything Shepard-related and watching him is so damn funny. You can tell he's like "wtf???" the entire time.
First Shepard turns out to be bff with all the cool Admirals who want to send them everywhere but on planet Earth where he wants to be. So off they go to Mars, where he has to listen to Ash or Kaidan have a very deep and intense conversation with Shepard. It's not awkward at all haha. Then an asari appears almost out of nowhere (out of a vent, okay????) and kills Cerberus soldiers. When he points his weapon at her (seems like the smart thing to do in this situation, right?), Shepard stops him because of course, that asari is their friend. Of course.
So he looks like at Ash or Kaidan like "Is this for real????"
And later the asari named Liara casually mentions she's THE Shadow Broker and she's collaborating with Admiral Hackett to get the plans for a device that will kill all the Reapers. OBVIOUSLY.
This is one way to join a crew.
He meets THEE Liara T'soni in the flesh and all this happens on his first mission after the bullshit horrible mess he was heading on Fehl Prime. He's like, dang okay Shep is definitely on some other level of wild than I ever even knew
Then not five minutes after meeting The Shadow Broker, they ship off to the front lines of Turian space and meet some guy named Garrus who all the generals are saluting and somehow? is also Shepard's bestie? And just joins the crew no questions asked.
Oh and also the ship is run by a sentient AI who is programmed to commit five hundred different categories of war crimes and is, like, super illegal. But no one has time to worry about that because it turns out Shepard is also old buddies with The King Of The Krogan and we're going to cure the Genophage.
James Vega's first week back on active duty is less of a whirlwind and more of a Hurricane.
Perfuma: Catra, you’re fine. Just be yourself.
Catra: Be myself? Perfuma, I have one day to win over Adora’s parents! How long did it take before you guys started liking me?
Bow: Couple of weeks.
Mermista: Six months.
Glimmer: Jury’s still out.
Catra: See, Perfuma! Be myself, what kind of garbage advice is that?
