Converting to Judaism and Transness
So as a yeshiva student, we learned a bit about how one is supposed to act towards converts/gerim, and those were, among others
1. Don’t ask what their name was before they converted
2. Don’t ask them about what their life was like before they converted, and don’t talk about it unless they bring it up
3. Don’t single them out/out them as converts
4. That converts have a Jewish soul and are drawn to Judaism by a sort of need, a homesickness, if you will
And I feel like this is also a really good way to look at/interact with trans ppl?
Any trans Jews (convert in-progress or no) have anything to say on this?
@jewishconvertthings ?
I frequently tell cis converts and trans people who were born/raised Jewish that the experiences are actually quite comparable, and this is an excellent list for cis born Jews as well!
My Chabad Rabbi was asked why he was ultra orthodox but so cool with trans people and he’d always say it’s because he’s a convert and knew the feeling of not being born as what he wanted to be and having to go through years of life transformation and loss of family relationships to become how he wanted to be and he felt kindred with the different trans people who came to Chabad in that way. He has a few former members of the Chabad college club he keeps in contact with and one is a trans woman who is a lawyer for trans rights.
