Reform movement leader: ‘Government slamming door in the faces’ of Diaspora Jews amid rising antisemitism;
MK Rabbi Kariv: Move would ‘collapse the bridge’ between Israel and Diaspora
One update everyone wants to hear is that the vote has been delayed at the Prime Minister's instructions due to outcry from diaspora Jewry. So keep kvetching, it's a superpower.

On Shavuot, Jewish tradition celebrates the story of Ruth, emphasizing choice, loyalty, and belonging as the central qualities shaping the boundaries of the Jewish community. A proposed amendment to the Law of Return would go against this spirit – everything you need to know about the bill and the history on the issue.

Hey all, I made a new blog and I'm going to transition over to that for my primary one. I'll keep this account for nostalgia (it was originally meant to be a journal of my conversion but that was... 8-9 years ago? Wow!)
Anyways I haven't fully set it up yet but if you would like to follow or be mutuals over there let me know! I can send you the url.
I want to use tumblr more socially. I'll also be documenting my journey through rabbinical school as I'm finishing my first term in a month!
God loves diversity, not uniformity. That is a fact of theological as well as ecological significance. Every attempt to impose uniformity on diversity is, in some sense, a betrayal of God’s purposes. One definition of fundamentalism, and an explanation of why it is religiously wrong, is that it is the attempt to impose a single truth on a diverse world.

you cannot kill your way to a better world
Fuck this. Kill your rapist. Kill your local corrupt politician. Kill all the rich assholes who are poisoning this world just because they have enough money to get away with it. You'll see how things improve
you’re not going to do any of that
but also
And what's your fucking solution then? Kindness? You show kindness to the people that hate you and nothing changes. Hell, it even fuels the fire of their hatred. You show kindness to people in power who were already mass killing people and they just keep fucking going. "You're not gonna do that" push anyone over the edge and see them break. Not everyone deserves kindness and the world won't change until people finally take action.
there’s plenty of hard work you can do to move the needle, and it has nothing to do with kindness. while i think it’s better to calibrate your moral compass by compassion rather than hate, it doesn’t really matter how you feel. i care about what people do and the results they get.
and from that perspective, no, you can’t kill your way to a better world. people keep trying and trying that and expanding the list of acceptable targets and it leads to exactly the world that we have now.
there’s actually a lot of distance between “kill them with kindness” and “kill them all.” acting like it’s a binary option is a lack of imagination. there are plenty of ways to take action that aren’t murder, or rather making calls to violence on social media, and i think you know that.
let’s make this clear: i think killing in self-defense when there are no other options is a necessary evil. that it has to happen at all is a bad thing. i don’t trust guillotine LARPers to make that distinction.
Replying to:
"Whats your fucking solution then? Kindness?... to the people you hate?"
Yes, even though youre too thick and jaded to understand kindness is by far the most powerful thing. Kindness can save lives, kindness can show people there is another way.
Hate rots you, it turns you into a monster. All these evil people in the world are filled with hate.
This is an interesting mentality, that kindness is useless, it is absolutely disturbing as well.
I think we forgot about the power of words and the power of being kind. There are a lot less reasons to end human lives than you think. Kindness is not weakness, weakness is mindless killing that is a never ending cycle. Kindness can break cycles of violence. Kindness can save lives. Being kind to that old person may help them see you in a better light.
Ending lives is easy, kindness is hard.
There are legitimate reasons to kill, but they all revolve around self defense reasons.
I am honestly disgusted that humanity, especially the "leftists" are not only choosing violence, but now think it is the only option.
Killing your rapist wont take away your pain they caused you, it will actually haunt you worse.
So in short, yes the answer is absolutely kindness.

I think a lot of you are kinda lame for doomerism and already declaring democracy is dead forever. Like yeah Trump is weakening it but come on have you seen other people in countries with so much less democracy and so much less privilege fighting for more. And you are giving up already, lame.
there’s so much here to comment on that idk where to even start, maybe with their idea that noodle kugel and little hats are the sum total of jewish culture
"I don't want to be genocide adjacent."
How about a genocide VICTIM, Ms. Bogen? Because I'm fairly certain that's what most of us would be.
always fun when american ashkenazi jews are like ‘UGH! i wish ppl would stop associating jews with the place that is the global cultural center for non ashkenazi jews where the vast majority of non ashkenazi jews currently live and instead associated jews with a stereotype of secular american ashkenazi jews!!’ bc u will notice shit like this never includes ashkenazi religious or spiritual practices. it’s always food and (maybe yarmulkes bc they’re so heavily associated with jews already). like tbh i see it as a push for homogenization and assimilation and i do not care for it at all.
They always think assimilation will keep them alive. Like if you joke about eating kugel and bagels, everyone will pretend your last name isn't Himmelstein.
To which I would like to repeat:
"Imagine the reputation of global Jews if Israel didn't exist" I don't have to imagine it because I've learned Jewish history and I know exactly what our reputation was, mainly "those greedy inbred government-controlling blood-drinking Jesus-killers"
I love this man so much. I’m sobbing. I already liked him on insta, but I didn’t see this post. What a fucking hero. 🩵😭🩵
I discovered this guy on insta a couple months ago after scrolling past several videos in a row just absolutely steeped in antisemitic hatred. And then this guy shouts into the camera:
“HEY JEWISH PEOPLE!”
And I instantly seized up like “oh, G-d what’re we gonna get accused of now?”
And he goes:
“Why y’all been gate keeping babka from me‽”
Then he proceeds to eat babka for the first time and declare his undying love for it.
I cannot tell you how nice it was to see someone just acknowledging our culture as real and be excited to learn about it and not bring politics into it at all.
He has had so many opportunities over the past several months to step away and say “wow, people are really angry about this thing I’m doing. Maybe everyone yelling is right and I should step away from something so controversial,” and not do any research about any of it. Many people I once respected have chosen to do that, regardless of the impact on the Jewish community worldwide and locally.
He never took that chance. He was always like “Food is good and I like it.” He intentionally sees humanity in everyone. Always. And I love him for it.
I love him so much.
If you make jokes about how an indigenous language looks like key smashing or an alien language or whatever, please know that I am exploding you with my mind.
If an indigenous person shares their language with you in any capacity, you BETTER be fucking kind and respectful and interested and not make a single joke that will leave them feeling hollow inside or else I'm going to bite your throat like a rabid fox.
"Wow, your tribe's language makes me feel like I'm having a stroke lol" your name will be forgotten.
Is this how I'm learning that Minecraft fans stole actual languages' syllabics and writing, including Ojibwe, for the game's made-up language's unicode. And now people associate my tribe's syllabics, for a language that has been violently suppressed and almost driven to extinction, with a mediocre video game. I am exploding EVERYONE with my mind now. No one talk to me ever again.
How hard is it to come up with your own? Star Wars and Marvel both created their own alphabets (for letter replacing cyphers). You can just... Put forth a liiiiittle effort.
There is an actual written Galactic alphabet in-game but fans came up with a unicode alphabet to be able to type it online, mainly using what looks like Ojibwe syllabics, mathematical symbols, and a random scattering of different languages like the Japanese リ and the lateral click ( ʖ ) used in some African languages.
I don't think the fans had any ill intent, they just used whatever unicode symbols looked closest to the in-game ones, but the complete lack of regard for what those symbols ACTUALLY mean and how this behavior affects the perception of indigenous languages as alien or fictional is what really hurts me.
The American people overwhelmingly oppose Trump’s plan. In fact, a recent poll found that only 14% of voters support cutting social services to fund an extension of Trump’s tax cuts. That’s why Republicans passed the bill early in the morning when no one was watching — because they know how wildly unpopular it is. This bill is NOT a done deal. It still needs to pass the Senate. It's important that we get in touch with our senators and tell them to vote NO on this bill. Keep calling. (202) 224-3121
I use 5calls.org which makes it pretty easy. I've been calling and bothering my reps basically every day since January because it makes me feel slightly better. Today, it's essential we flood the phones. Don't make this easy on them. Make your voice heard!
There is no excuse for gutting basic support for those in need to give those with more than enough a little bit more.
This Shabbat I will be adding new names to my prayers... Hoping that their journey to reincarnation is a peaceful path.

Okay Jews and other Indigenous folks, now's our chance while the Vatican is at its weakest to steal our stuff back
Let people grow.
When I was younger I was very right-wing. I mean…very right-wing. I won’t go into detail, because I’m very deeply ashamed of it, but whatever you’re imagining, it’s probably at least that bad. I’ve taken out a lot of pain on others; I’ve acted in ignorance and waved hate like a flag; I’ve said and did things that hurt a lot of people.
There are artefacts of my past selves online – some of which I’ve locked down and keep around to remind me of my past sins, some of which I’ve scrubbed out, some of which are out of my grasp. If I were ever to become famous, people could find shit on me that would turn your stomach.
But that’s not me anymore. I’ve learned so much in the last ten years. I’ve become more open to seeing things through others’ eyes, and reforged my anger to turn on those who harm others rather than on those who simply want to exist. I’ve learned patience and compassion. I’ve learned how to recognise my privileges and listen to others’ perspectives. I’ve learned to stand up for others, how to hear, how to help, how to correct myself. And I learned some startling shit about myself along the way – with all due irony, some of the things I used to lash out at others for are intrinsic parts of myself.
You wouldn’t know what I am now from what I was then. You wouldn’t know what I was then from what I am now.
It distresses me deeply to think of someone dredging up my dark, awful past and treating me as though that furiously hateful person is still me. It distresses me to see others dredging up the past for anyone who has made efforts to become a better person, out of some sick obsession with proving they’re “problematic.”
Purity culture tells you that once someone says or does something, they can never go back on it. That’s a goddamn lie. While it’s true that some remain unrepentant and never change their ways and continue to harm others, it’s important to allow everyone the chance to learn from their mistakes. Saying something ignorant isn’t murder. Please stop treating it that way. Let people grow.
Still call it out and question it ….
Bruh. No. Listen. Call out what people do now, absolutely. If they haven’t changed, call them out on their record. This post is explicitly not about people who HAVEN’T changed. What this post IS saying is, if someone is making an effort to be a good person, don’t go digging around in their past for evidence that they were once for what they’re now against, or once against what they’re now for, as “proof” of what they “really think,” because people’s opinions and beliefs can change.
The obsession with finding shit in someone’s past and then claiming that a questionable or even sordid past negates all possibility of a good present needs to become extinct. Gold-star activism and purity culture are bullshit and we need to collectively reject the fuck out of them.
If someone has changed for the better, don’t harass them about what they were like before they fuckin’ changed. That’s shitty and it needs to stop.
We can’t change the world if we decide people can’t change.
Gold-star activism and purity culture are bullshit and we need to collectively reject the fuck out of them.
We really need to start asking where this purity bullshit came from. I’m not Christian and was not raised Christian but there has been a lot evidence that much of gold star activism and purity culture originated in of evangelical youth movements and then infiltrated progressive left-wing and center-left politics when those youth left their churches but failed to leave behind the black-n-white puritanical “you’re going to hell if you stray one inch from the righteous path” style of thinking they were taught.
I distinctly remember some conversations I had in the late 00s and very early 2010s with long time social justice activists who were baffled and disturbed by the new crop of youth activists who were practicing something that was decidedly NOT social justice despite stealing that phrase from us.
In the decade and a half that has passed since then, all of this gold-star activism and purity culture has done exactly what I predicted back then: empowered the far-right while sowing division everywhere.
Folks. This shit needs to stop.
