So im aorry science side of tumblr if what im saying is dumb or disproven, but i just remembered a youtube video i saw about how we dont know the one way speed of light, so i was thinking, since we cant measure it with one device, is there a way we could instead measure it against say: the speed of sound, we know what that is and we know it isnt directional, and since we have an estimate on how fast the speed of light is and we can measure the speed of sound, we could set up an experiment where we have 2 devices, one that emits a sound, and then a light, such that if our estimates are correct they would reach the second device at the same time, and the second device would measure the time difference between the sound wave and the light arriving at it, i think that would let us measure the one way speed of light

TLDR: At the speed of light, time and space are relative, so we can’t compare things at different times and places easily. The only loophole we have found is the two-way method to measure the speed of light, where it ends at the same place it starts from.

Your idea would work if we wanted to check the speed of anything that goes slower than light. However, close to the speed of light (700 million miles an hour!) things get FREAKY. Time and space don’t work the way they do at slower speeds.

The reason that we can’t measure the speed of light one way is because we would need both a clock at the light source and at the destination. But due to the way special relativity works, the distance between the source and the destination is relative. It literally changes depending on where you are and how fast you are moving! There isn’t a way to think about it with normal objects and speeds, it’s just weird like that.

(Here’s a common example that comes up for special relativity. Say you have a train that’s 100 feet long when it’s not moving. The closer its speed gets to the speed of light, the shorter it becomes! At 600 million miles per hour it will be much shorter than 100 feet long. At 700 million miles per hour, it would be squished so much that it would barely have a length at all! In the same way, to a light wave it looks like all distances are basically zero. Working out what that looks like from a human perspective is hard.)

So unfortunately your sound wave example would run into this issue. There isn’t a meaningful way to make sure the sound wave and the light wave end up traveling the same amount of time. The amount of time you think it takes will depend on whether you’re standing close to the source or close to destination and how fast you’re going. (And how fast YOU are going depends on the speed of everything around you— the sound wave, the surface of the planet Earth beneath you, etc etc.) Same goes for if you aim the sound and light wave at the same target and try to measure the difference between their arrival times. How you measure this time interval will depend how fast you’re going and where you are. (Someone standing still relative to the target will measure a different time than someone on a rocket ship zooming by the target. Putting the target on a rocket ship and changing its relative speed compared to the sound wave will also change the time.)

We know that the speed of light is a fixed, constant number due to the two-way method of measuring light, where it starts and ends in the same place and thus skips some of this weirdness. If we try to measure it going one way, we could end up with different numbers depending on how we set up the experiment. This means that the one way speed of light isn’t a meaningful thing to measure. It’s like dividing something by 0— it sounds fine at first but in practice you just can’t do it.

Special relativity is an objectively difficult thing to work with since we don’t have any reference for it in our day to day lives. This was a good idea to consider! It requires you to really think about what’s going on at high speeds.

So this is the first time im posting in a while but I just need to vent

Im sure most of yall have heard of popeyes, and at least some of you are familiar with how they almost never get an order 100% correct, and have i got a story for yall. Me and my fiance were ordering late at night on doordash (our first mistake), so we waited like 40 minutes for them to deliver our order and when it arrives the bag is huge and contains just my sandwich and fries, nothing my fiance ordered and my drink is nowhere to be seen. So we request aredelivery of every item we were missing and when it eventually arrives we get way more than we asked for, it was still missing my fiances mac n cheese and my coke, but we also got 3 extra sandwiches, a random lemonade, and an extra serving of fries.

We have resolved to not order delivery from popeyes until we forget about this one
