Emily Pangnerk Illuitok
Birds Nesting in Cliffs, c.2007
~
Born in 1943, Illuitok was an Inuit master sculptor from Kugaaruk. She created detailed, delicate ivory/bone carvings that mostly represented hunting or nature scenes. Illuitok often worked with found materials that she then shaped into works of art. She passed away in 2012.
The above work shows birds nesting and is made of whale bone and ivory. Notice the little detail on the bottom right of a polar bear hunting some seals.
SCROLL BACK UP YOU GUYS IT’S A SCULPTURE
I was like “oh, tiramisu” and then I realized no it’s a wildlife photo, but NOPE.
It’s a sculpture
fully thought it was bread
very impressive bread, but bread.
I don’t care if you make fun of Catholicism as long as it’s accurate! The best humour has its roots in the truth.
“You can be mean to me but there are RULES about it” is the most Catholic thing I’ve ever seen.
I walked into that one
They say that the way you should view disagreements in relationships is “us vs the problem” and not “me vs them” and I think that to a certain extent that mindset can also be helpful when engaging in political or ideological movements
Taking feminism as an example, it’s a lot easier to see trans people and intersex people and even cis men as your allies within the movement when you view your movement as “us vs inequality and sexism” and not “women vs men”
If you’re some form of a socialist then working with people with different political ideologies than you becomes a lot easier when you view the problem as “us vs the bad system” instead of “socialists vs everyone else”
I personally at least find most problems easier to tackle once I attach this sort of mindset into it. You do not inherently in every situation need to view other human beings as your enemy. And in fact when your goal is to solve the problem and not to Defeat Your Opponent then you can get more creative with your problem solving.
all the “peer pressure is bad” education we give kids is practically useless because all it cares about is telling them that Drugs Are Evil rather than the much more useful lesson of ‘the person who responds to you saying you don’t drink by telling you they’ll find a way to get you to is also going to be shitty about all your other boundaries’.
god forbid you teach kids that their consent should be respected rather than about the inherent immorality of all the sinful actions of their peers
‼️ my recreation textbook said prison abolition now!

What Recreators Can Do
It costs approximately $30,000 to incarcerate a juvenile offender for one year. If that money were available to Parks and Recreation, we could do the following:
Take him swimming twice a week for 24 weeks,
And give him four tours of the zoo, plus lunch,
And enroll him in 50 community center programs,
And visit the nature center twice,
And let him play league softball for a season,
And tour the gardens at the park twice,
And give him two weeks of tennis lessons,
And enroll him in two weeks of day camp,
And let him play three rounds of golf,
And act in one play,
And participate in one fishing clinic,
And take a four-week pottery class,
And play basketball eight hours a weeks for 40 weeks,
After which we could return to you: $29,125 and one much happier kid.

I didn't steal them! I just ... forgot to give them back!
i love this attention to detail 💕
so for the past 20 years or so, i've been lowkey obsessed with the idea of habits, the idea that having good/positive/healthy habits can have a massive effect on your quality of life and overall vibes. and i have tried a bazillion apps to track my habits that have made a lot of bold claims but not really delivered. but, i've been using this new one for about a week now and i'm really loving it. it's set up like an rpg where your character gets rewarded when you check off your tasks & routines, but it also lets you skip a day without completely tanking your progress.
oh, and the creator has committed to keeping it 100% free (including ad-free) without any bullshit tiers or premium features. it's still pretty new and in beta, so i think it'll only get better with time.
if any of my tumbly friends are the constantly-trying-to-form-better-habits kind like i am, you might want to check it out :)

i'm not crying you're crying
HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.
It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.
You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.
FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.
There is a similar petition in the UK as well! It only has 230 signatures or so so if you are in the UK sign it! Clicky clicky go go go! Let's get these damnable things off the road!
the united states is not a good enough country to get legislation like this but i'm happy for australia and the uk and hope you get it 💗

Frog Paints a Water Lily Pond 🪷🎨🐸

Ok, I adore the Frogs to begin with, but the sheer finesse and dedication of this one boggles my mind.
me: this is cute and precious
my brain: 45 years ago this person could've made a public access television show that ran for half a decade on the strength of this concept with the right framing device and it would've been paid for with federal arts grants and maybe even national syndication rights. now they're begging for a single minute of engagement on tiktok in the hopes that maybe someday the abstract metrics of digital media platforms will translate into a tangible career
me: yeah me: cute frog though
my brain: it is a cute frog
When I was a child, this would have been run between kids' shows on Nickelodeon, or as an HBO short to fill the space between movies, and we all would have been FASCINATED by it. And watched it all the way through, multiple times.
had contractors come by and forgot i was wearing this shirt
kind of wishing i still worked at the fishing-and-water-conservation nonprofit so i could roll into work wearing this
once I did an Americorps position & I won’t get into exact details but two months in my one other coworker & I were rly frustrated bc we weren’t doing anything in our job description or the contract we signed whatsoever & instead we were basically being used as extremely underpaid retail staff and slowly the ppl in charge of us were cornering us more and more into that until I was finally like okay….what the hell? I opened up the work contract I signed and realized I hadn’t done a single thing listed in my role so I sent a long (professionally worded) complaint email to Americorps and they called me an hour later in total outrage because it turned out the work we were being made to do was explicitly prohibited by the program and we were being 100% exploited for cheap labor and the very next day we got a new supervisor and spent the rest of our year doing what we signed up to do and it rocked.
I ♥️ Complaining
”#it is very easy to confuse yourself with a Karen, #trying to shoulder on and not make a fussc #but sometimes Complaint is Necessary or else nothing will get better, #for anyone”
[ID: tweet by gianmarco @GianmarcoSoresi:
"Nobody likes a complainer but they're needed for a functioning society. You know how humanity gets compared to frogs in boiling water and everything is getting bad so gradually we won't even notice? Not if l'm around". End of ID.]
also: kind of useless to complain back and forth with peers unless it emboldens someone to complain to someone who can do something about it. a karen complaining to the cashier about the price of a sweater is not the same as emailing the program director or calling your senator.
