"Lucien" has woken up in a cult with no memory, no defences, and no context, all he has is a body, muscle memory, and a cult of people he doesn't remember who pulled him out of a grave.
They tell him who he is, they fill him up with knowledge, their beliefs are compelling and offer power and purpose. He's got weird abilities and muscle memory backing up what they're telling him.
Their relationship and support of him is silently but entirely contingent upon him being that person as hard as he can.
He is fundamentally isolated from the rest of the world and there's no one else he can trust to talk to. Even if he decided to leave, they probably wouldn't let him, and Cree could find him easily if he did.
He is trapped, and he probably knows it.
But however well the Tomb Takers knew Lucien, they don't know what he really thought, they don't know what Lucien knew, all they have is the external Lucien they saw.
So this person they've tried to build is not Lucien, because the Tomb Takers present every bit of bullshit original Lucien spouted to them back to this new person as the truth, and he's having to use their image of him to build his internal foundations.
It's like showing someone a photo of a grandfather clock with none of the internal mechanisms and telling them to build it - it's gonna look the same from outside but the inside is a fucking mess and it's only gonna show the correct time twice per day.
Then this ragtag group starts poking their noses in, and Cree's gotta tell him something about the Mighty Nein, probably a bit dismissive, oh they're a group of mercenaries you ran with for awhile who got you killed, blah blah
He's gotta be thinking, "Oh hey, here's a group of people who know something about me that I don't" and 'Lucien' is not *running the fuck away* like Molly did when he was in this exact situation.
He *wants* to meet them. He does. Cree and the others probably just want the M9 to go away, and didn't encourage this interest at all. Cree at least must have realised what happened with Molly, and they don't want to lose their Lucien again, not before finishing whatever the fuck they started.
This weird Lucien shell with his mismatched, jammed together, puzzle-piece insides is gonna actually be exposed to the Mighty Nein, who remember a self-assembled Mollymauk who built himself entirely out of shiny things he liked from the people around him.
