there's never enough money each month. there's always an unexpected illness. new symptoms pop up or old symptoms flare up. meds have to be managed always and refilled constantly and any refill has the opportunity to go wrong. any regular care has the opportunity to go wrong. any mistake can send your health spiralling. it's always "i just need to get through this bad patch" but as soon as one ends another begins. another crisis begins in the middle of the last crisis. managing one thing leaves another thing to be neglected until that becomes a major issue and has to be managed asap and the cycle starts anew over and over and over

It's with a heavy but hopeful heart that I watch Palestinian families fundraiser on here, slowly accumulating the precious little money to go around that they need to survive. However, not everyone is so lucky. A lot of Palestinians that have not had that kind of luck, that did not get early verification, that did not get massive platforms behind them from large bloggers, have approached me in my inbox, asking me kindly to do what I can for them. It kills me that I have so little to give myself, but I've seen this platform collectively raise enough to change someone's life. I've made a list of Palestinian fundraisers that are extremely low on funds, in the hope that drawing attention to people who have not been lucky at all can help turn that luck around. I know most of us can't possibly give enough to get all of these families safe in one go. But please, reblog this list. Pick one or two fundraisers, give what you can, and then keep track of it. Slowly, collectively, we can make a difference in these people's lives. Garden plants you can grow and eat during winter!

Winter and Spring are the dry period of gardening, because most of your vegetables will start giving produce in summer and fall; it’s common practice to can, ferment, dry, freeze and otherwise preserve summer and fall produce for the sake of winter food. It’s somewhat unreliable to expect to be able to survive on canned and preserved food only for several long months of the year, so I’ve been looking into what can be grown as fresh food during the cold months.

Collard greens are  one thing you might be able to grow in the winter, if your winters are mild. Keep in mind, that even winter-hardy vegetables that can withstand the frost and the cold, will not grow very fast, or maybe grow at all during the days of short light hours, and the way to have them during winter is to plant them in your fall garden, have them grow almost to their full size during the fall, then leave them in the ground during winter. This year, I was able to harvest leeks, broccoli and kale during the winter, even as they grew thru the summer. I’ve seen other people leave cabbage and cabbage savoy in their gardens as well.

Roots: carrots, beets, and turnips. These can be grown to their full size, then left inside of the soil for the entire winter, to be harvested whenever you feel like eating them. Carrots should be harvested before the full spring hits, as they will easily go to seed (or at least it happened to me twice), making them inedible. There’s also a bit of a danger of pests getting to them before you do, so don’t plant all of them in the same place.

A plant that is actually harvested during the winter is a jerusalem artichoke; this is a plant related to a sunflower, but it grows underground tubers, similar to potatoes, they look a lot like ginger in appearance, but taste somewhere between a potato and an apple. I had a great amount of them pan-fried last winter, and got used to their taste so much I started to crave it.

It’s also possible to grow broccoli during the fall and winter, it’s going to be a little slower if there’s a lot of snow, but in a mild year, I was able to harvest a bunch in January.

If you have a minimal ground cover, or a little greenhouse setup (can just be stick and a greenhouse cover, or a big transparent plastic tub  covering the soil), you can reliably grow lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, and other cold-hardy plants.

Some mild winters might allow you to harvest swiss chard, spinach, parsley and celery way after the growing season is done, and I’ve had such luck this year, and had a decent amount of greenery in the cold months. Outside the garden, dandelions, daisies, rosehips and some wild seeds are foods that are usually found even in the cold months, and can be integrated into salads and dishes as an additional nutrition, the wild plants are packed full with vitamins and minerals you might need in the winter months.

Combining what can be grown, and what can be preserved will offer you a great variety of dishes and nutrients during the cold season, and with a bit of planning and knowledge, you can sustain your food security all year long. Crystal Knot Magic

Knotting a crystal net is very easy if you are able to use your fingers for this kind of crafting.

They are often called crystal "wraps" and many tutorials can be found on Youtube.

There are many, many ways to make a crystal net. The style you use determines the final appearance. More importantly for us, the style you use determines how many knots there will be, and their size.

We can draw on four common elements of magic: Crystal/mineral correspondences, color correspondences, numerology, and knot magic.

The stone (or other object) is like the battery which holds and radiates power. The object you net should correspond to your core intent.

The color of cord or thread you use can modify or hone your intent. For example, if using clear quartz, the color correspondence might be doing most of the work.

Then again, this spell will work with cotton twine and a river stone, so just do whatever suits you.

The total number of cords you use dictates how many knots total will exist in your spell. Crystal nets are made by tying two strands of cord together. If you use four cords, you will have eight working ends, and therefore you will tie four knots per row. If you have five cords, you will have ten working ends, and you will need to tie five knots per row. I align my numerology to the number of knots, not strands, because the knots themselves are holding the magic.

The knots are used to tie intent and bind power. I create most of my charms in a style that has one big starter knot at the top and one big finishing knot at the bottom. There are tons of ways to utilize knots in this project. The first knot can hold the only intent, while the rest bind powers to support it. Or the intent can be split into its composite parts and each part gets its own knot. Or every single knot can have something unique, or they can all be identical... lots of options.

Conceptually, the inner object is the focal point or battery of the spell. The knots can be understood as tools that the object uses to carry out your will, instructions to guide the object in its work, vessels that carry additional power (like tidepools on a beach), or tangles that capture and bind up unwanted forces.

To perform this sort of magic:

1. Learn how to make the nets first from an arts and crafts perspective :) you can cut the cording off to re-use the same stone later. It is really frustrating to try and do a craft in a ritual headspace if you have to learn the craft simultaneously!

2. Gather up your cording and object to be netted. Do any ritual techniques you prefer to prepare them.

3. Decide how you want your intent to be tied in. Do you want to use the same phrase for each knot? Do you want to chant your intent continuously while you do many knots? Etc.

4. Make the crystal net in your ritual headspace/magic zone. Pour your intent into each knot in whatever methods you choose.

5. I recommend making the final knot of your project into the seal which completes and finishes the amulet ("so mote it be," "as my will it has been done," etc).

6. If you did not raise and direct energy during the spell, ensure the amulet is charged afterwords. Like all amulets and talismans, it requires feeding and repowering as time goes on.

Garden Design Tips

I’ve made a couple of posts about native plants and where to find them and about gardening wisely. I’d now like to share a few hints about designing your landscape. I’m not a trained garden designer but I am a freelance designer.

Your garden doesn’t need to have a particular style, but it should have rules. If you prefer a unique, freehand approach, go for it! However, come up with a pattern, shape, theme, rhythm, or color palette with which to organize it. Your theme could be “cutting garden” or “Mediterranean” or “woodland.” It should have internal logic even if it’s very loosely applied. Constraints breed creativity and working within them becomes very fun.

Create garden rooms as an extension to your house. I’ve read this tip in hundreds of books and articles and would nod as if I understood and then move on. It’s something that sounds complicated but isn’t. If you went to someone’s house and they had one gigantic room with nothing in it except a trashcan in the corner, would you spend a lot of time in it and explore the space? You can see everything from the doorway and it’s empty in a way that feels somewhat daunting and foreboding. Many people have yards laid out like the gigantic room. They might have some skinny plantings along the edges of the yard and a utility shed very far away but otherwise it’s wide open and empty. Humans don’t like big empty spaces, we don’t explore them very willingly and feel uneasy to stay in them for too long. When you lay out your garden, you should build walls of plants to partially enclose separate spaces. A patio set seems much more inviting if it’s surrounded on three sides by bushes and flowers than if it’s placed in the middle of a lawn with no anchor. Just like with houses, you can create a yard with a central corridor or a plan that brings people through each room seamlessly. The “walls” don’t need to be tall or completely opaque but should give the feeling of intimacy and structure. It’s very useful to have visual breaks between areas which allow you to transition from one palette or theme to another without having to coordinate them. You could have a rock garden backing up to a woodland and it could seem perfectly natural because neither can be seen from the other. This will also make your gardens seem larger because it feels like there’s always more to explore around a corner.

Garden paths should follow the path of least resistance. Garden paths are so notoriously circuitous that the expression “to lead someone up the garden path” means to deceive them. If you lay a path that bends and twists for no reason other than your own taste, it won’t be used. Even you won’t use it. Before you lay a path, find the easiest route and use it as your guide. Lay out a hose, rope, use spray paint or chalk lines to mark it out in some way. If you don’t like how it looks, put things in the way of it. Pretty much the only reason people stay on a path is if there are things on either side. Beds, bushes, trees, garden ornaments, any of them will do the trick. They don’t have to be tall, a two inch difference in height or a textural change will visually cue people to stay on the path but they must be substantial enough to feel that they exist for their own sake rather than to justify the curve in the path. Make your paths wide enough to haul a wheelbarrow through comfortably because someone will have to at some point.

Start small and create plantings with purpose. Find areas where your lawn doesn’t grow well, under the shade of a large tree, a particularly wet or dry spot, an area that is inconvenient to mow and start there. You will feel more accomplished and the location of the bed will look more natural. Follow the curves of the topography or the lines of your house, pick a line or curve and follow it. It should mirror, echo, or continue a shape already present but perhaps not particularly visible. Trees grow best when the soil around them isn’t compacted and their trunks aren’t nicked by lawnmowers, underneath their canopy is a perfect spot to start a bed. Be mindful of their roots, don’t dig any large holes for large plants, start with seeds or small plugs. Don’t pile soil or mulch around them deeply, use only an inch at most of mulch around their base and keep the crown of their root system where the roots meet the trunk exposed.

Water features should be placed where they might naturally occur in the landscape. Fountains mimic springs which occur on high ground where the water table has been forced up through the geology, ponds occur in the lowest parts of the landscape where water would naturally pool. Having a pond at the top of the hill looks odd. Streams and waterfalls start high and finish low, this seems intuitive but in practice becomes complicated. If your patio is on the top of your lot and you don’t want a stream to start until midway down the hill, you must find a way to justify why the water suddenly decided to form a stream there as opposed to running down the hill anywhere else. Play with perspective and topography. Water behaves like humans, it finds the path of least resistance. If you want to get very particular about it, get some modeling clay and make a model of your lot, carve out your stream or pond, and then pour a trickle of water onto the top of the model to see whether the water finds the stream bed or pond. It may sound too complicated but water features are very expensive, permanent installations that require a lot of maintenance and could potentially cause property damage if installed incorrectly. If you’re not willing to plan them that particularly, they’re perhaps not the right fit for your garden.

Its even worse than that. I’m living through it. Not only are schools closing, hospitals are collapsing. Only around 9% of the island has electricity and it comes and goes at times.

People are dying in hospitals because of lack of diesel for the generators, a lot of the water is now infected, there are disease outbreaks and scareceness of food. I am safe, but many are not.

Some have water, others don’t. We need help. Sending money would be helpful but what would help even more would be sending water filters, filtering water bottles, food, medicine, if somehow possible diesel.

Because 2020 just keeps on giving! I now have to get about 480 dollars as fast as possible to renew my transit card because my work is not doing it anymore. Without my transit card I can’t get to the grocery store or to work - I will be effectively unable to work even my limited hours.
