I’m so interested in the scene with Robby and Samira. I think that interpreting that scene as purely a display of his bias is a discredit to the underlying reasons of for behavior.
I believe that his behavior is him misdirecting his own feelings onto her because he does not want to confront his own vulnerabilities. In this state of mind, the last thing Robby wants is to be confronted by reminders of traits he sees as personal shortcomings.
The apology wasn’t made to resolve the conflict. In fact, I think it was very intentional for it to be so blatantly dismissive. He apologized for the very surface part of the issue, him being unprofessional.
However, in my interpretation of the scene, it shows a bit of his own internal monologue. Her distress is seen as self-pity rather than a shared understanding of her struggle. He dismisses her emotions because acknowledging it would mean confronting his own inner turmoil.
He’s condescending, and I think it’s an indication of his own inner dialogue.
I mean even looking at the first season and the level of secrecy surrounding his own panic attack, I think is very telling. It felt like it had brought him deep shame and embarrassment.
His perception of her situation is meant to reflect and highlight his own internal struggles. His reaction is his attempt to distance himself from the shared vulnerability.
I noticed that the compassion people had for Robby is quickly disappearing. The second his mental illness shifts from a deep rooted sadness and grief to a defensive and intense anger. Mental illness will never be clear cut. It takes on many different forms.These both indicate a crisis. One is just takes on a more palatable form.
It’s genuinely a bit disheartening to see people immediately turn on him and say he should just kill himself. We don’t have the intimate moments from the first season. So I think it’s important to take from scenes like this and dig deeper for what is motivating his actions. Not my way of excusing it, but taking the time to understand the why gives more insight to Robby as a character.
