turian structure tutorial: bigger images: 1, 2, 3 Ā
first of all this assumes you know how to draw humans. if you are trying to learn how to draw turians before humans, stop. there are plenty of tutorials out there that will teach you how to draw. this is just for these weird aliens.
I kept this as simple as I could, more down to the construction of their anatomy, rather than detail. doing your own gesture drawings (the third image) will help you familiarize yourself with how their bodies can pose.
troodon80ās models are great reference. the ones I use the most:Ā turian head, casual garrus, armored garrus
other turian reference images Iāve made: 1, 2
I received requests for geth and krogan deconstructions too, so those are on the way!

Top 12 alternatives to Photoshop for digital painters and illustrators
Hello there!
Yes, we havenāt done this in a while⦠but our inbox and chat are swamped with questions on the subject, so this article was very much needed.
itās a simple list of art apps, but we know you love those :D
Enough with the intro, here it is, a list of twelve art apps you may want to check out.
ArtRage is an art program for beginners and professionals. With its minimal interface, itās easy to keep the essential tools at hand without stealing space from the canvas. Panels can be moved around and tools can be customised. We all know how important it is for digital artists to be able to modify brushes!
Pros:Ā easy to use; friendly interface; essential tools from professional apps available; available for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac
Cons: it may get sluggish with big files and when using big brushes, but performances also depend on the running machine; limited selection of editing tools if compared to Photoshop - ArtRage is more of a painting program rather than an editing one.
Paid
ArtRage Lite is a different version at a cheaper price, mostly for beginners, but also for professionals if they need the essential.
Now free, Sketchbook is the famous app created by Autodesk for various platforms.
Pros: clean, friendly interface; easy to use; professional features
Cons: lack of official tutorials; doesnāt offer as many tools as other apps (itās down to the essential); paid subscription in Adobe style for multiple licenses
Free and paid
Black Ink is a powerful little program few actually know, but thereās a reason: this isnāt your classing drawing app. Whatās cool about it is the vast selection of special brushes, completely non-realistic, and definitely able to boost your creativity.
Pros:Ā vast selection of customisable brushes; excellent performance
Cons:Ā not very easy to use; non-intuitive interface
Paid
This is probably the most complete software for painting, drawing and animation. It was originally known as Manga Studio, but with its updates and addition of features, it became Clip Studio Paint.Ā
This doesnāt say much about the quality of the features themselves considering the affordable price (if you havenāt used the app yet, that is), but among graphic apps, this one is the top seller.
Pros: professional features for illustrators; layout tools for comic/manga artists; 3D reference models; customisable tools; variousĀ sales with special prices
Cons:Ā the interface may not appear intuitive at first; the programĀ may lag (again, performance also depends on the running machine)
Paid
GIMP is the famous open source image editor originally created for GNU/Linux and available for OS X and Windows.Ā
Best known as Photoshopās main competition, this is a manipulation program for both beginners and professionals who love design.
It offers many professional features, making the program a powerful tool.
Pros: professional editing tools; supports different formats; supported by different platforms; active community
Cons:Ā in spite of the simple design, many options are hidden and it takes time to discover all the features; slow startup
Free
Krita is an open source painting app created by artists for artists.
Pros: easy to use; intuitive interface; great brush workflow; brush stabilizer; customisable brushes; general good performance; very enthusiastic, although small, community
Cons: it may be slow or even crash depending on the running computer and the appās version; very few editing tools compared to Photoshop
Free
MediBang Paint is a free and light app for drawing and painting, perfect for manga and comic creation.
Pros:Ā vast selection of brushes; cloud sharing; friendly, minimal interface (non-desktop app); also available for iPad, iPhone and Android
Cons: requires an account to use all features; non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
Free
Mischief is a sketching app with essential tools, useful for brainstorming and ideation.
Pros: infinite drawing canvas; friendly interface; easy to use; cheap pro version
Cons:Ā few updates; offers only the essential (but thatās the point); no editing/adjustment tools
Free and paid
Corelās jewel, Painter is the most famous software that offers digital tools able to give a traditional feel to brushes and canvas.
Pros:Ā different selection of media; many professional features; PS-friendly
Cons:Ā certain brushes may work slow; not easy to use at first; the software may crash (this is the most common report); pricey
Paid
Paintstorm Studio is a professional software for digital painting. Itās focused on the use of brushes and blending, which makes the software a little gem in the digital painting field.
Pros:Ā good brush workflow; brush stabilizer; āclose gapā feature; customisable interface and tools; professional features; affordable price
Cons:Ā non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
Paid
Procreate is the powerful drawing app for iOS.Ā
With the very sensitive Apple Pencil, Procreate is so easy to use that many artists chose the iPad over the most famous graphic tablets.
Pros:Ā friendly interface; makes it easy to organise files; excellent brush workflow; customisable brushes; video recording; affordable price
Cons:Ā hidden features; only available for iPad
Paid
SAI is a simple app for artists who want to focus on painting and drawing.Ā
Itās well known for its good pressure support and its essential tools for manga artists, but SAI can be used by any kind of artist who wants to paint.
Pros:Ā easy to use; friendly interface; light software; customisable brushes; tons of (non-official) tutorials
Cons: limited selection of tools, even basic ones; limited canvas sizes and uses; it might crash from intensive work, especially with big canvases and brushes; supports only RGB colour mode; lack of support
Paid
We hope youāll find this list useful.Ā
If you think there are other apps that should have made this list, donāt hesitate to let us know!
Thank you and peace out,
G&M

DANA LEAK YOUR BRUSHES
I use literally One (1) brush that isnāt a photoshop default (e.g. hard round or soft round). I donāt even remember where this one came fromāit originated from someone else and I believe I tweaked it a bit to my liking?ābutĀ enjoy
It relies heavily on pen tilt which not all tablets support, so you might get different results if your tablet is one of those.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!
So if anyoneās wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i sayĀ ātop of the legā iām not talking about the crotch (please donāt flag me tumblr itās an anatomical term) iām talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
Itās easier to see what Iām talking about in this photo of a man squatting:Ā
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG
No one asked but hereās a brief tutorial on digital underpainting and how it can add some extra flavor to your art!
(I got asked this a couple times so just to clarify: I used āoverlayā in the second slide⦠but the rest of these examples are JUST painted on, no effects! Try playing with the opacity on your pencil/water/brush tool to allow the base color to show through!)
One of my favorite techniques!
Applicable to traditional media as well.
Arlene Steinbergās masterful color is an awesome book that shows you how to implement underpainting in colored pencil. Gary Greene also utilizes this technique.
I rarely ever use black or white bc light bounces and reflects colors everywhere and you canāt get those colors in nature.
I drew my lovely mc Clementine, trudging through the swamp to find their disaster bf and give him a well deserved smooch.
Theyāve had a rough time out there, and wanna cuddle with the bird man.

FireAlpaca is now COMPLETELY a Paint Tool SAI alternative!
BITMAP WATERCOLOR BRUSHES, YāALL!!! Want to make some SAI brushes in FireAlpaca? Check out THIS handy Guide!
Want to make this brush? Just make a perfect circle and save it (I call mineĀ āroundā) and use it as the bitmap, and copy the settings above. It works pretty nicely :D
aHHHH HOLY SHIT WHEN DID THIS POST START TRENDING?!
UM, WHILE IāM HERE:
Here is where you can download FireAlpaca (it is completely free software)
*If English is not your native language, you can download it in other languages.
Please download from the official FireAlpaca websites, because a friend of mine simply googled FireAlpaca and downloaded from some random site, and she got malware! So PLEASE be careful.
FireAlpaca has a suggestion/bug reporting box on their site so you can request features, or let them know if youāre having any issues! Also FireAlpaca works fantastically on Mac computers! (though I will say the only time FA has crashed on me is when I used a Mac, so PLEASE save your work often)
Also, please visit these tumblrs if you do get into using FireAlpaca:
@everythingfirealpaca @fpacatuto
for anyone who wants an alt to Sai. :O
@valynara ! Hey remember when i told you fire alpaca was a good alternative? Check it out its great for mac!
Just letting yāall know link is broken, just change the username to nerdgasrnz and youāll be fine!
Notes / guide to faces / whatever
What it is - basically line tracing of sprites so it would be easier for you to understand shapes of faces. Muriel and Portia can be not so accurate cause we have only ¾ view of them, so i drew side and front view by myself haha ⦠Also Asraās page outdatedĀ cause we only recently got front view of him.
Anyway maybe for someone this will be helpful.
Ackria in her full archangel regalia, minus the hood/helmet. I like drawing armor ouo
One of my ocs Ackria as a Winged-Naga :3c it's kinda messy cuz I rushed it and I'm bad at coloring but I like it well enough!
