I want Tashi Duncan and Shane Hollander to meet so bad. They would make each other so viscerally suicidal just by being in the same vicinity. They wouldn't even have to talk to each other. 1 like and I will explain my tashi & shane analysis
Okay basically I want them to meet because Tashi and Shane would bring out the worst in each other without even trying. They wouldn't even have to interact, proximity is enough.
Shane would hate being near her because Tashi's existance is destabilizing to Shane's subconscious belief that it won't happen to him. Every moment he spends in her vicinity reminds him against his will that at literally any point he could experience the same catastrophe and it makes him so anxious it feels like he's crawling out of his own skin. The idea of losing hockey, of subjecting himself to the torture of coaching (because he can't live without hockey but being so close to it without being able to be IN it would kill him day by day) is violently repulsive to him.
He keeps thinking "if i was her i would have killed myself" and he's totally unable to conceal it. Tashi hates him for it and understands him in equal measure. Even if his discomfort wasn't written all over his face, Tashi is perceptive and more importantly when it comes to sport she is a haunted house mirror of Shane. They understand each other far more deeply than either of them are comfortable with.
Their trajectories are parallel– both young prodigies in their respective sports, whose entire life has revolved around that sport since childhood. Both tokens, the Black girl in tennis and the Asian boy in hockey, constantly sought after for sponsorships. Both nearly unmatched in skill, truly generational talents with promising pro careers stretching out ahead of them. They are going to be internationally known champions. Except her path got cut short before she could really take off and his star just continues to rise.
Tashi hates being near Shane too, and jealousy is only part of it. Another part of it is that she cannot stand being pitied. Not from anyone, but least of all from someone who can truly understand everything she lost. But beneath that, the part of it that bothers her the most is that she KNOWS what Shane is thinking!! She hates that part the most because it dredges up everything she tries not to think about.
But now it's here at the surface. Why DIDN'T she kill herself? She should've. Instead she chose to build a career that's an inescapable reminder of the worst thing that ever happened to her. And now because she chose the "better" option, the "stronger" option, she's been rewarded with... fucking what? A life she hates, a husband she resents, a kid she never planned for or really wanted but had anyway because that's the kind of life she has now. The wife of an internationally known tennis champion. Why the fuck didn't she just kill herself if this was all she's ever going to get out of living?
So yeah, Tashi gets it, what Shane must see when he looks at her. She can't blame him. It's exactly what she would be thinking about him if their roles were reversed. But it does make being in a room with him a little excruciating.
