God damn Starfleet Academy giving me Jake freaking Sisko, a Dax reveal and so much DS9 love, made me cry through half the episode and then. Then they slammed me over the head with Avery’s voice and now I’m full on sobbing through the god damn DS9 theme song.

I will need approximately 3-5 business days to recover from this episode.

I recently did a Garak run of DS9 where I only watch the Garak episodes, and my friend Rebecca asked me to put together a list of the best ones for her to watch (with a special emphasis on the Garak/Bashir ship). So, here are my picks! What are your favorite Garak episodes?

A reminder that Gene Roddenberry's intent of Star Trek was that it was always meant to be a commentary of modern society.

It's amazing how easy it is to get people to listen to morality plays if you add the word "space" every so often.

Look at these SPACE people so obsessed with the color of their skin.

Unfortunately, a lot of people never learn how to get past that childish defensive reaction to the suggestion that you might have done something wrong.

You say “treating people that way is wrong” and even if you aren’t saying it to them they flush with guilt and the panic of a child about to blame their sibling for a broken vase.

The panic, in fact, of a social animal in fear that they may be rejected by the group.

To a social animal, this is an existential threat. They process it as a threat and respond with fight or flight.

They dig their heels in and become defensive and no amount of logic or gentle guidance or furious shouting will move them because admitting they’ve done wrong means they deserve to be punished.

But if you say “treating space people that way is wrong” suddenly they’re off the hook. They can engage with the concepts without having to directly confront their own complicity.

…And they can happily identify with the noble egalitarian protagonist without changing anything about themselves.

The abstraction is necessary to give people a place to start. But it’s very obvious that can’t also be where it stops.

Eventually, they have to admit they broke the vase.
