thinking about what is and what isn't allowed in frame with reference ecosystems in prairie restoration
Explanation from OP in the replies
restoration ecology tends to want to restore to a past state of an ecosystem, but magically that past state never involved people! Harvest, reciprocity, etc are all ignored because we pretend there's such a thing as prairie without people. Turns out, that imagined prairie never existed, there were always people here and there should people involved in restored prairie too!
If a flaming old queen in a cape wants to kill off racists in power I say have at it
That wasnât even his plan!! His plan was to make the senator a mutant, so heâd have to advocate for mutants or be destroyed by his own policy, and tbh. Itâs the best villain plan Iâve ever seen. The goo was the plan unexpectedly failing. 9/10 only bc he was going to kill Rogue. Next time use someone willing to sacrifice herself for the cause, pls. No further notes
I like how his plan in like real world terms, was to turn desantis gay but instead he exploded
like to charge reblog to cast tbh
I remember someone saying "mad scientists in fiction aren't scientists because there's never a control group"
I think if you've created an elixir that turns people into goat men you have sort have gone past the need for a control group. The control group is not going to placebo themselves into goat men. You can probably not run the control group, and safely assume that none of them would have turned into goat men. That said, having a control group for that would make the mad scientist seem extra crazy and be really really funny, especially if he was carefully testing them for goat like features from the dyed water they drank instead of the elixir

This makes me so sad and also I'm trying to remember if any of the Discworld books dealt with late stage capitalism
Itâs already happening. Like guys I cannot emphasize this enough the studios are going to make content creators the deal of a lifetime because they have a void to fill and those content creators will then be on the do not work list for the rest of their professional lives.
I think tiktok and youtubers should be specifically warned as well. With SAG-AFRA on strike studios will be looking to fill spots and a lot of young people who are big on tiktok and YouTube and would be super excited to be recruited for Hollywood are easy targets
So letâs be unequivocally clear here:
If you work (scab) now you will NEVER make it in Hollywood.
Your ability to network with other actors is part of what will make or brake your career. If you cross the picket line now you will never, and I mean Never, be able to network with the actors on strike.
They will shun you (rightfully) and that will be it.
You can get as big as you want in the 2-? weeks the strike is in affect, but as soon as itâs over, as soon as the career actors and A-list big names come back you are done for.
Donât let entertainment companies destroy you for their quick buck. If you are a YouTuber or a tiktoker- this is not âan opportunity of a lifetimeâ. Itâs a con.
My contempt towards a brand is directly proportional to how often they interrupt my playlists.
Remember when someone was like âhaha the funniest thing tumblr could do right now is make it so you get a badge for looking at 600 posts instead of what twitters doing lolâ and then they did it. That was pretty awesome. I think the funniest thing tumblr could do right now is stop flagging trans womenâs post as sexual right fucking now lol and fix prev tags and get rid of the fucking bigots and racists and nazis for once haha and also apologize for this shit. Wouldnât that be pretty funny lol haha it would be so funny if they did this
Just found out that the dietary calorie is still measured by burning food in a "bomb calorimeter" and then measuring the heat produced. There's no solid evidence that this method is at all equivalent to how our bodies process food (an entirely different chemical process from combustion), the accuracy of this system has been disputed for as long as it's existed, and there are no available alternatives
There are 4800 calories in a kilogram of dry sawdust even though wood is completely indigestible to humans, because calories don't measure nutritional value, just how well something burns
Nutritional "science" is pure bullshit
A good primer on this topic is the Maintenance Phase podcast episode âThe Trouble with Caloriesâ: https://maintenancephase.buzzsprout.com/1411126/10671811
Prefer reading? The sources list for that episode is full of goodies:
History of the Calorie in Nutrition
Caloric Equivalents of Gained or Lost Weight
The Foreign Policy of the Calorie
Why the most popular rule of weight loss is completely wrong
The energy balance model of obesity: beyond calories in, calories out
âCalories in, calories outâ and macronutrient intake
Calories on food packets are wrongâitâs time to change that
Why Does the FDA Recommend 2,000 Calories Per Day?
Who Actually Needs a 2,000 Calorie a Day Diet?
The Nutrition Facts Label: Its History and Updates
It doesnât stop there though, almost everything we think we know about nutrition is kind of bullshit.
You need 2000-2500 calories a day? Thereâs no evidence to support that claim. Itâs fully a made up number.
Calories in - calories out = weight gain or lossâ? Absolute bullshit. No credible scientist believes this anymore. Your body compensates for dieting in like a billion ways to the point where reducing calorie intake often results in long term weight gain.
2 liters of water per day? Again: a made up number. ZERO evidence.
The BMI? Not remotely based on science. Absolute bullshit.
Being âoverweightâ or âobeseâ is bad for you? Heavily disputed for all but the highest weight categories.
And of course: there is no evidence based way to lose weight and keep it off. The idea that people can decide to be thinner if not supported by evidence. Almost every study shows that almost all humans just keep returning to their set weight again and again.
Vitamin supplements? We still donât really know why they sometimes work and sometimes donât. Your body seems to decide whether to absorb them pretty much on a whim.
It all falls apart the moment you go looking for evidence. Itâs such a sham.
Remember, kids: everything doctors spout like gospel about nutrition is based on shaky science, small studies, and guesswork.
BMI is especially bad; it's literally a made up number that wasn't ever even intended to measure "health," it was more a way to categorize entire populations into a crunchable number set for anthropological purposes (and if you're thinking "well that's sus.." .. no kidding, it is.)
Most long term nutrition studies are based on voluntary participation that involves people just living their lives while keeping food diaries. I can't even order the same drink at the same Starbucks at the same time of day and actually get the same thing, but it would be calculated in a food diary as if it exactly adhered to Starbs' published nutritional data.
The most 'accurate' nutritional studies are based on groups of people whose every single consumed food item is doled out by scientists in a research setting - literally lab rats - but go ahead and get your surprised face ready, all of those are SHORT TERM. Weeks to, iirc a month SINGULAR. Thirty days out of the lives of a dozen people and we use this data to speak Truth (tm) about the whole world?? There's not even very many of those studies. Are you actually the same person every day of the month? I'm not, my hormones yank me around as I retain water and shed it, and that's just the variable I can see as my cute pants fit or not.
Also, because of the nature of the experiment, only small groups of probably healthy volunteers are involved! Is a diabetic "healthy"? They can be, and diet matters. Is someone with genetic high blood pressure "healthy"? They can be, and diet matters. However, for obvious reasons, you can't just endanger the life of a diabetic with controlled dietary experimentation.
... actually people's lives have been endangered by nutritional studies, so. Yeah.
Anyway, tl;dr - nutrition is just BARELY science, because it's really hard to study it in a controlled way. Very few aspects of diet are even close to "set in stone." (Vitamin C is definitely mandatory, and how do we know that? Because thousands of sailors were definitely part of a situation with a very controlled diet, hah.)

The funny part about the "I'm not going to coddle my kids, the real world isn't going to be nice to them" kind of people is that once their kids are grown and out of the house, they spend years being continuously astonished to learn that people as cold and mean as their parents are actually extremely rare.

op this is good commentary but Iâm mostly just captivated by how you drew the kid as a teeny little grub with a propeller hat
i don't want a career, i want to do crafts
While I understand this is probably venting, I have some thoughts I wish to share.
If you don't want a career, you want to craft, maybe look into the trades. I've started working as an elevator mechanic recently and, holy shit it's changed my life.
Like, seriously. While the work is tiring, it's deeply satisfying too. To me, very similar to getting a pattern in crochet or sewing figured out. It involves using your hands, using your brain in a similar way crafting does, and it can also pay incredibly well (meaning you can use your left over pay from making things in your day job to making things just cause you want to with your evenings and weekends).
With fewer and fewer people going into trades, there's more and more demand, making it easier to get in. My province is currently paying eligible students to become trade workers, so you can see if you have a similar program where you live. (if there are any Quebecers here interested, check out Operation Main D'oeuvre and call your local Emploi Québec office for information).
And for Mentally ill people, I've found construction insanely helpful for managing my conditions. Like, regular exercice helps the management of so many conditions, right? But I've always hated exercise for the sake of exercise. But now my work has me moving every day, making my depression and ADHD way easier to manage. Nothing like beating a recalcitrant rail support into place to help work off the nervous energy creates by anxiety either. I've been struggling with my mental health for well over a decade and I do not have words to describe how good it feels to wake up and have no dread about the work I have to do today. I might be tired and grumpy, but even then, there's no soul crushing dread.
I've also found it empowering and it helps me with my crafting (it teaches precision and gives you a really good eye for measurements, depending on the trade). It gives you financial power as well as power over your space (I've changed all the switches in my apartment for dimmers, easy peasy).
So yeah, TLDR, don't want a career, want to craft? Maybe manual trades are the route for you. I know they were for me
Computer repair was easily the best most fulfilling work I ever did. Just me and a little puzzle I knew how to solve.
if you have autism please look into welding. you get earplugs and gloves and a cozy helmet. you do the same shit the same way every day. you are surrounded by the weirdest and most dysfunctional men ever invented and you donât have to respect any of them. you go to your little horse stall and glue bits together until itâs time to go home. itâs exhausting and sometimes painful work but i have worked retail and i have sucked dick for money and i can say with my whole chest that welding is significantly less stressful in terms of time, effort, pain, and dealing-with-people.
if you have ADHD i do have to warn you that welding gets boring after awhile and you are discouraged from making little bugs out of scraps. you can do it anyway. but you have to hide them from your boss.
âSo if little girls experience their menstrual cycle in 5th grade or 4th grade, will that prohibit conversations from them since they are in the grade lower than sixth grade?â asked state Rep. Ashley Gantt, a Democrat who taught in public schools and noted that girls as young as 10 can begin having periods.
âIt would,â McClain responded.
Unbelievable. Link to article.
The first ever suicide prevention hotline was created in 1935 bevause a man conducted a funeral for a 14 year old girl who ended her life because she got her period. She didn't know what it was and assumed it was a STD. Learning about periods and sexual health is life saving. Republicans are unapologetically just evil.
You know, here's a thing: I went to Catholic school from age 5 to age 16. (My family's not Christian, but the local public schools weren't great, so -- )
In 4th grade, girls were given a clear, scientific, extremely bland pamphlet about menstruation. It was Boring and Educational. There wasn't any class about it or anything -- just the pamphlet, provided in a plain manila envelope for you to take home.
Starting in 5th grade, the school provided a small pack of pads to girls. This was probably so that anyone who unexpectedly started her period at school would have an emergency supply, but the thing was: this boring pamphlet, this pack of pads handed to you by a nun, made menstruation...so normal. It's so normal that a nun hands you a pack of pads. It's so normal that there's a boring pamphlet. It's just a thing your body does. (It's so normal that you realize, oh, nuns have periods, huh.)
It kills me, KILLS ME, that this totally boring and bland form of education about human bodies is somehow Too Much, Too Scary, Too Sexy, for some people.
following weird horny furries who are into shit like pooltoys and transformation and stuff is enrichment. the vitamins and minerals of posting

âThis is his name, his profession, and the address weâre meeting at. Iâll text you when I arrive, when we decide if weâre going to one of our places (with an address) and an updated time for a check in. If I donât text you by 10AM, call meâ
Dude not even dating, aguy gives me a ride somewhere and Iâve got at least one random friend who has his car make and model license plate full legal name and place of employment. Not a word of exaggeration
last year i offered a ride home from an art studio to to a teenage trans boy who got stuck there without bus money and he got in my car without even glancing at the plates. i said, âwait, hold up, donât you want a picture? youâre an eighteen year old trans boy and youâre just going to get in a car with a man you met two hours ago?â and the kid was like âoh well youâre trans tooâ and i said, âwhat if i lied about that? are you telling me that all a total stranger has to do to get you into his car, alone, is to lie to you for a couple hours? iâve got a hunting knife in my glove box. iâve got rope in the trunk. you donât want anyone to know where youâre going?â and he was embarrassed and defensive and like âbut you are trans, and i was like âthat doesnât matter. you need to be doing safety checks. you need to play it safe.â
then i walked him through taking a picture of my plates and texting it to his discord pals before i started the car. the whole way home i lectured him on ride safety and not trusting weird men you just met a couple hours ago simply because he shares your gender identity and opinions about naruto.
the fact that i cared deeply about his safety and got him home perfectly safe with a stop for mcdonaldâs probably undercut my attempted life lesson that Strange Men May Murder You. but i fucking tried!
Safety first. Learn and live.
seeing trans ppl in public is literally life giving. wish there was a normal way to express to other trans people in public that weâre family and that i love them
