It really bothers me when people act like modern day upper class americans invented plant-based / vegetarian life styles when our connections as communities of color to those diets were taken from us

Also bugs me when ppl do a whole song and dance about the price difference between plant based diets and the norm like...we do get handed back grocery receipts same as everyone 😂

The fact that it spans multiple cultures and nationalities and marginalized groups that even just I'm personally close to / part of should be pretty telling, because it's not just those few!

Amazon Sucks, Try eBay Instead

At this point, I would be shocked if anyone didn't know of the massive issues perpetuated by Amazon against their workers, against the environment, and more. That said, one great alternative that I have been engaging in is actually that has been rivaling it since its beginnings: eBay.

The Transparency of eBay

One thing I really enjoy about eBay is the fact that it tells you the numbers. Amazon refuses to show their carbon emissions numbers to the world, and has ties to many companies and entities, like the Military, that is a gas-guzzling giant.

Meanwhile, eBay is open and honest about all of what they do, and what they are doing to reduce their overall impact. You can read their 2019 environmental impact report here.

No extras, Less energy usage

Unlike Amazon, eBay does not contribute to GHG emissions via shipping their own goods, having tons of massive warehouses, production of branded products, making their own boxes, overpacking, and more. eBay is mainly just a site used to provide the transactions and the individual sellers package and ship on their own accord. In fact, according to their report:

"When looking at our corporate footprint, data centers comprise the majority of our emissions at 57 percent, and offices and business travel contribute 43 percent."

This means that most of the emissions are created through the computer data centers that allow the transactions to take place, as well as holding the data, images, videos, etc. This means that the majority of their emissions can be drastically reduced by simply reducing their reliance on fossil fuels and switching to renewable energy. Which they are.

Their use of renewable energy has been going up quite a bit over the past few years, and they are hoping to reach 100% renewable by 2025.

Buy Local and Used

Every time I go to buy something on eBay, I specifically change my search criteria to only include items that are located here in the US, and are used. I can't always get something that fits both of these criteria, but 99% of the few things I do buy, are. These includes books, specific items of clothing to upcycle, etc.

Doing this drastically reduces your emissions footprint, and also helps a generally small seller be able to make a little bit of money from selling their old books, games, or clothes, etc. There are a fair amount of larger shops who sell on here too, like goodwill, but many of them are small sellers reselling their own stuff, or buying liquidation crates and selling the contents.

Other Alternatives to Amazon

eBay is not the only alternative to consider either. You can also find some awesome goods at places like Etsy, Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Facebook Marketplace, and more. There are so many online shops that sell secondhand goods that there is really no reason to ever shop at Amazon. Or, at the very least, reduce your shopping there to a minimum.

You stumbled across a fairy ring while hiking in the mountains. You’d always heard your grandma tell you that fairy rings were dangerous and to not set even one foot inside. Carefully keeping both feet on the ground, you bent and set your pinky finger to the grass inside the ring. You yanked your hand back almost immediately, expecting something to happen, but nothing did. Laughing a little, you stood up and turned to continue down the path, when a text message buzzed your phone. Puzzled, since you shouldn’t have had signal way out here, you looked.

The text message simply said: “Very clever.”

Fairies often try to extinguish Midsummer bonfires via whirlwind, but can be stopped if fire is thrown at them.

Leaping through the Midsummer bonfire protects one from fairies.

Driving cattle through the embers of the bonfire with protect them from them from the attention of evil spirits.

In order to escape the chase of fairies, cross a stream of running water.

Carry rue in your pocket to ward off evil fairies.

If you are being pixie-led or troubled by fairies, turn your clothes inside out to confuse them and then make a run for it.

If your companion is being dragged into a fairy circle, throw in one of your gloves and they will disperse giving your companion time to escape.

Scatter flax on you floor to keep fairies out of your bedroom.

When confronted by fairies show them any form of iron and they should vanish as they are terrified of iron. Lore says to keep a knife or nail in your pocket or under your pillow at night.

Hanging a Hag Stone above your door frame will keep evil fairies at bay.

Rowan wood tied into a cross with red thread will protect the hearth when hung up somewhere high.

A besom placed beside the fireplace will stop fairies from coming down chimneys.

Burying a Witch Bottle in front of your doorstep will also provide protection from pesky fairies.

Oatmeal sprinkled on clothes or carried in pockets will keep bad fairies at bay.

 St. John’s wart prevents fairies from carrying you off while you sleep.

Mulberry trees in the gardens will keep away evil fairies. Dancing counterclockwise around a Mulberry tree at Midsummer will also aid in this

some notes on anti-asian racism

look. other people have commented on this before, but it seems like it needs to be said again because some of y’all aren’t getting the message. 

asian people are a marginalized minority. what about this do people not understand. asian people are marginalized because we live in a system of white supremacy and in this system, asian people will never be white and will never have the power of white people. just because a lot of asians are relatively well off financially does not mean we are not marginalized; there are other ways to be excluded and treated as unequal besides in terms of money, and this completely ignores the millions of asian people who are poor and working class, including the women who were killed in atlanta. asian people are not basically white- we look different, so we are treated different, just like any minority. it’s that simple. if asian people were not marginalized, why else would hate crimes against asian people rise dramatically in 2020. why else would we be attacked in the streets. why else would people tell us to go back to where we came from. why else would the chinese exclusion act be passed, japanese american citizens be shipped to the midwest during world war 2, vietnamese people massacred by american soldiers in the 70s. asian people are being killed now. if we are not marginalized, why are there targets on our backs for existing. 

black lives matter and stop asian hate are movements for social justice that have the same root cause: destroying white supremacy. black and asian communities have often been pitted against each other by white institutions seeking to take advantage of sowing discord between minority groups, but there is a rich history of black-asian solidarity during the fight for civil rights in the late 20th century. yes, anti-blackness is a real, endemic issue in asian communities, especially among older asians.  and yes, asians can also experience racism (see this addition on a reblog about why i changed this) hate from black individuals- see these examples of cardi b using an anti-asian slur, this incident that happened yesterday of a black man pouring unknown liquid on an asian woman. neither is acceptable. supporting one movement does not negate your support for the other. you can do both, in fact, you should do both. realize that we all have a common enemy here, and it’s the system of white supremacy that has oppressed us. we are not free from white supremacy until it is all entirely eradicated, for everyone. 

just because i speak in the collective sense about asian people does not mean that all asian people are the same. even though some of us may look similar, with black hair and “small” eyes, that is only a representative image of some east/southeast asian people. asia is vast and incredibly diverse, and each nation has its own culture, language, and traditions. in addition, the asian diaspora is huge. asian people live all over the world, in varying economic, social, and political situations. different asian people in different areas have very different problems, even within the same country. an asian in a small town in nebraska will have a very different experience than an asian in paris. a korean person will have a different experience in a given place from an indian person. i don’t know how many times in my life i’ve been asked, “are you chinese?” the answer is no, i’m not, and a lot of asians aren’t chinese. tied into this is the mistaken belief of some nonasians in the western world that all asians are still allegiant to the country of their heritage and speak the language of that country, which manifests in comments like “oh your english is so good!” or “are you, like, communist?” first off, it ignores the very real possibility that an asian person could be born outside asian countries, and second, being from a certain country by no means determines whether you’re loyal to it and agree with its policies. i just saw this with an anon claiming all chinese people support the government’s reeducation camps for uyghur muslims. this is absolutely preposterous. 

finally, a word on allyship. i have zero faith in people- and by that i mean white people- to continue talking about this and spreading awareness about anti-asian racism. part of it is this model minority myth, that asians are basically as well off as white people, at least financially and academically, so they can figure things out by themselves. no. absolutely not. we cannot get out of the hole white supremacy has put us into without white people making a genuine, legitimate effort to confront their own biases. your white tears, your prayers and thoughts, they mean nothing when the blood of our families and friends runs in the streets. they mean nothing if you haven’t bothered to learn a single thing about your own prejudices. i hope to god that i am wrong about this. i hope for my family, my friends, and myself that y’all will continue to be loud about this, because we are tired of screaming for help in a crowd where we are invisible and no one cares. but i’m a skeptic for a reason, and it took a massacre for people to notice what was happening. i don’t know if i’ll ever be proven wrong.
