If you are going to an event this holiday season (or ever in the world in your life) and there’s going to be Somebody there you don’t want to talk to, here’s my advice.
Talk to them first.
Reasoning:
“If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.” Mark Twain. This person is your frog; get it over with!
You will fulfill any obligation to talk to this person and you will have taken the initiative. They cannot complain you “never talk to them” or that you are mean/rude if you cordially approach them first.
You have an easy excuse to leave the conversation. “Nice to see you, but I still need to say hello to [more pleasant person].” It will be easy to stay in conversation with others for a while, if you’re lucky you won’t have to speak to this Somebody again.
This is the first time I see reasonable advice about this topic on Tumblr. By 'reasonable' I mean something, that doesn't involve acting straight up rude (ignoring the person you don't want to talk to completely, pretending they don't exist, or 'standing up to them' in a way, that will immediately start na argument and ruin everyone's mood) or avoiding family gatherings completely. It is possible to spend time together, even if there's a person you don't like there, without having to talk to them much, but also without openly showing your aversion or acting passive-aggresively.
I dunno what kind of lives other people live where they think “don’t like somebody? Cut them out of your life forever” is viable advice.
Maybe I hate Great-aunt Bertha but I really want to attend family Christmas to see my cousins. Maybe I have coworkers or clients or classmates I don’t like, but am not interested in quitting my job or dropping a class for a couple of unpleasant people. Maybe I am in the same social circle as somebody I dislike, so there’s a chance they make an appearance at a party or event.
I see and interact with people I dislike on a regular basis and I develop strategies (like this one) to minimize unpleasantness when “never see them again” isn’t possible.

Go my slop
Just got a call from AT&T. Pretended I didn't know what AT&T was. Asked them to explain what they do. They said they're the American Telephone and Telegram services. "Dude, it's 2026. Telegrams are still a thing? Isn't that from 1800s? How are you all still in business?"
Dude hung up on me.

anyway i love nonlinear narratives, i love it when it's unclear where a story begins or ends, i love it when they're fragmented by recollection and perspective and record, i love it when no narrator is truly omniscient or objective or infallible however much they might wish to convince you otherwise. i love narratives that misremember their own details, that present them with equal consideration for others to evaluate and determine reality from fiction, truth from illusion; naratives that are themselves psychotic. i love narratives that double back on themselves, that go around and around in circles they can't break off from, and make no sense on a map. i love it when time is out of joint!!!
if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite
Michigan is experiencing its largest outbreak of a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea. Nearly 1,000 people have been diagnosed
this is not life-threatening, but also who wants weeks of diarrhea and a fucking parasite in them lol. if you suspect you've already had this and it's passed, i would see a doctor. you might need an antiparasitic anyway. if you're actively sick, see a doctor and they might be able to prescribe medication to help you get over it faster.
try to avoid eating raw vegetables, scrub fruit with a produce brush and rinse thoroughly with water. again, don't bother with premade greens or bagged salads. if you buy lettuce, remove the outer 2-3 layers of leaves.
there are UNVERIFIED rumors that the greens have been linked to a company that sources to taco bell. some locations have been actively pulling fresh ingredients like lettuce, avocado, and pico de gallo to mitigate the threat, so i would avoid any products from them just in case. considering how vast supply chains are, i'd be wary of any fast food greens in general for now.
also note this is a PARASITIC infection. most diarrhea-causing pathogens you expect to contaminate your greens are bacteria (e.g. e. coli and salmonella), which are a different domain of organism altogether. cyclospora is a protozoan, which is bigger and more complicated than a bacteria (for reference, malaria is also caused by a protozoan). bacterial diarrhea can be dangerous, but you might also expect to weather it and survive unscathed. do NOT fuck with PARASITIC contamination. you should be scared of this one!
Another note: YOU CAN'T WASH IT OFF!
Only high temperatures will kill cyclospora. It resides in what is like a shell, which is highly resistant to water and most cleaning chemicals. The substance it uses to cling to food is so strong we don't even fully know what its limits are. It may be best to avoid fruits and veggies you can't cook. Scrubbing only works if done hard enough and on foods with no hiding places (Like cucumbers and grapes). Peeling the skin off is your best bet at avoiding it however, scrubbing is not guaranteed.
Thank you OP for posting! Usually washing does work on most sicknesses, just not this one.
"Peggle make phone calls" has become shorthand for "fuck it, whatever" for me but no one ever knows what im talkingabout and it's also longer (longhand?)
peggle make phone calls
it really pisses me off when adults sit there and drill it into kids’ heads that their youth is fleeting and tell them things like “enjoy your childhood while it lasts because this is the best it’s gonna get”. why are you telling children that adulthood is the worse thing they can experience? seriously what the fuck is wrong with you, why are you trying to make them feel like growing up is a fate worse than death? trying to convince them their life is over before it even begins? i’m tired of that shit. because tell my why my 12 year old cousin told me when she turns 30 she’ll be so depressed she’s just gonna cry all the time. what the fuck. kids don’t need to hear that their already stressful and overwhelming lives are never going to get better, that the abuse and lack of autonomy they face is apparently the highlight of their lives. they need to hear about adults who are happy to be alive and happy to have made it to their age. they need to know that growing up rules, it’s a gift and life does not have to suck for them, that they have a future that’s worth sticking around for. this rhetoric is so damaging mentally and i’m about to start hitting the adults who parrot it. i’m sorry you hate your life but you don’t get to dump your issues on these kids. don’t piss me off and leave these babies alone!

That's how you show real solidarity!
"After they overheard that ICE was at the courthouse to arrest someone, they improperly accessed court databases to determine who was not born in the United States," a DOJ detention filing says. "They then snuck every suspected illegal alien who was at the courthouse out a back door, where ICE, who was waiting in the parking lot for their target to leave the building, could not see them."

Today I learned that cuttlefish experience REM sleep, and that it makes their skin flash random colors. This is the cutest thing ever.
The electric eel at my aquarium has a voltmeter attached to his tank, and whenever he pumps out a burst of electricity–either when he’s navigating his tank or getting fed–the meter lights up and makes noise. Sometimes, I’ll walk past him when he’s snuggled up and totally motionless on his log, and see the voltmeter going crazy.
I am left to assume that he is dreaming, and is sleep-zapping at the things in his dreams.
I am absolutely delighted to learn that electric eels dream of kicking ass.
Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that
Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do
Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control
Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child
Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.
