Fact: Deaf babies, when exposed to ASL, start to babble with their hands and learn to produce handshapes just as hearing babies do. They proceed through a similar linguistic acquisition process.

Fact: When children have early language input of any type, they later develop better reading skills (in English) then children prohibited from learning language. Children who learn ASL early learn to read better.

Fact: Extended language deprovation causes children to be at risk in other areas of physical and emotional development

Fact: Language development lies at the core of human-emotional and mental development.

Fact: The brain processes signed languages just as spoken language. Signed languages are in no way inferior to spoken languages.

Fact: Just as everyone has the right to speak, everyone has the right to sign.

A Mere Meeting

His name was Toni (or at least I imagine it spelled with an i) and we met in a coffee shop. He had impeccable style: an ivory scarf with black print. Blonde ringlets and blue eyes. I noticed these things second. I first noticed the pile of books he placed on the table when he took the seat next to me. One of my all time favorites was on the top. This is how we met. I taught, he learned. That makes sense, he said again and again. He gently pulled his scarf side to side, to one side of his neck then the other, symbolizing the unseen back and forth within himself. He did this when he was processing. The active irony of anxiety meeting truth. He wrote my email on the inside of the book. I told him not to forget, and that I hoped we’d speak again. Kaylee, he said, that’s your name. It’s nice to meet you. I smiled, for by this time, it was not merely me whom he had met. 3.24.18

By the way, is probably not a time-lapse. The flower opens that quickly in person!!!

Yes we had these when I was a kid and one day I just happened to be standing outside looking at them when they started opening and I almost fell down, I’d seen flowers opening in time lapse on TV and had no idea any actually opened that fast. And it still LOOKS FAKE in person, like it opens in such quick, staggered jerks that you would swear it’s stop motion animation.
