They really said
i love how OP is wailing over being set on fire but manages to remember to close the door behind him when he leaves the house.
There are no excuses for impoliteness
You know, Xaden Riorson starts out as a character that has some semblance of an inner world before that feature gets beaten out of him with every book. He just becomes less and less of a character as the story progresses. Suddenly, Xaden doesn’t have any meaningful motivations beyond his relationship with Violet and it becomes clear that the only thing Yarros considers worthy of exploration is how Xaden would literally abandon everything for her.
Like, we’re talking about a love interest who is not only a leader, but carries significant status and responsibility as a duke. He’s got things to do…but all of those “things” a.k.a his relationships, duties and other motivations are perfunctory. Yarros doesn’t care about how those things shape his character. They really only function as a way to enhance his devotion to Violet by showing us how much he would sacrifice to be with her. The fact that he wouldn’t hesitate to give it all up for Violet makes him look like he’s got nothing else going on in his life. This makes him an uninteresting character and love interest because it erases what little characterization he had for the sake of the main love story.
oof. i feel this a lot.
one of the most stand out Xaden scenes in Fourth Wing, in my opinion, was when he was out standing on the parapet while all of Basgiath was celebrating Reunification Day, aka the celebration of Xaden's father's death. and that was so poignant because Xaden was such an outsider at that time. and the amount of looks he's probably given for being Fen Riorson's son. the constant thoughts that he might turn out exactly like his dad (he does lol)
but we lose so much of what made Xaden a compelling character, his care for the Marked Ones, his leadership qualities, the entirety of his family legacy. we lose all of this within Iron Flame and Onyx Storm because his entire life is so wrapped up in Violet that he isn't anything else other than her boyfriend and it's soooo frustrating for that to happen.
like it doesn't even seem like he's interested in leading Tyrrendor as Duke. he just throws his weight around whenever Violet needs something and that's it. it's very disappointing
Hexagonal growth in a black olive tree
Let's play: Is it AI or Real?
Red flags: Unbelievable nature you've never seen before!, no external source cited, low image quality could be hiding AI artifacts, lacks scientific name for plant, OP is an aesthetic blog (no offense, I see you credit most of the artists you post, OP <3).
Green flags: Common name of the tree provided (although the leaves don't look like any olive tree I've ever seen).
Reverse image searches and citation trails all seem to lead back to now-deleted Reddit posts. Google Images says it's this one in r/NatureIsFuckingLit, and TinEye says it's this one in r/interestingasfuck. Both were posted back in 2020. This is important because the rise of AI images was in 2022.
People in the comments of places this image is posted throw around botanical terms like "dichotomous branching" [branches split into two at the nodes] and "divaricated" [branches grow far apart from each other], which are cool, but don't tell me what the tree is.
Searching up "Black Olive" on iNaturalist finally got me some answers, and it turns out that YES. This is a real tree! This tree is a Dwarf Black Olive (Terminalia molinetii, Formerly Bucida spinosa). The above photos are some particularly nicely framed shots of a tree with particularly small leaves, which really highlights the branching structure. I really wish we knew the photographer's name. Here are some more photos of the same species:

This tree is native to Southern Mexico, Belize, the southern tip of Florida, and Cuba. Dwarf Black Olives are completely unrelated to Olive trees in the Olea genus that I'm more familiar with (the former is in Order Myrtales [Myrtles, Evening Primroses, and Allies], and the latter is in Order Lamiales [Mints, Plantains, Olives, and Allies]).
Stay critical, and –more importantly– curious, y'all! The world is a beautiful place, we don't need fictional plants passed off as real ones for that to be true.
The lords of Gonfdolin.
Look at me trying to make as many variations of black hair and grey eyes as possible. Gonfdolin would be one of the places where I would consistently give most characters some kind of makeup. I just feel like they were all fairly vain and had enough security to start expressing themselves through makeup/fashion and jewelry more like their kin in Hithlum and Himring for example.
an attempt at drawing almost every named character in the silmarillion (minus a bunch of Men characters bc i didnt have designs for them, as well as assorted minor elves like salgant or elenmire + the valar and most maiar cuz im still redesigning them) 😙
been really busy these past months but i worked on this on and off in-between (you can see a process gif here!!). since ive got a bit of free time for now, ill try to get back to being more active :D sorry for disappearing out of the blue again but happy almost half a year... wait wdym we're almost halfway through 2025 already...?!?! ToT
edit: just in case there is trouble viewing the picture in high resolution (idk if tumblr is compressing the quality or anything haha), here is a link to it uploaded on pixiv where (i hope!!!) there should be no problem 🤞

orufrey sketches
are you kidding me?? All the hands holding the cups? And Qifrey trying to sneakily sniff Olly's cloak? Amazing.
do enjoy contemplating the idea that Oruggio made the Raincleaver for Qifrey when Qifrey went on his sad little soul-searching adventure

i do think a lot of implausible medieval plot devices make more sense when considering the fact that these people simply did not have glasses
like the king arthur problem of how were these people always accidentally sleeping with the wrong person? well 1) no glasses 2) no lights and candles are so expensive 3) royal couples didn’t even sleep in the same bed a lot of the time anyway 4) arranged marriage how much do you really know your spouse anyway? maybe not very well a lot of the time 5) people are drinking a lot idk. maybe not as absurd as one might think
this post is brought to you by the one time i woke up at a sleepover and realized that without my glasses i could not distinguish one friend from the other. haunting. all of arthurian literature was unlocked to me at that moment
used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic
not hunger games but I'm also a fourth wing fan and here's my babies Rhiannon, Sawyer and Ridoc (from left to right) 🫶
Fourth Wing fans are AWFUL for the use of AI when it comes to art of the characters and scenes, so I wanted to get some NON-AI fanart out there too
today's warm up: I think we could all do with cooling our feet in a river
These books were absolutely awful (affectionate)
