Growing up in an abusive household is a fucking trip dude……If you’ve never had someone angrily wash a dish at you or fold a sock in your direction then how are you gonna understand why I get nervous when you quietly do the laundry, or why I ask “are you mad at me?” when you set the bag of groceries down too hard? It’s a totally different way of living and it impacts you long after you’ve left the situation.

Abused kids speak a language you can’t learn

Over the years you learn to read emotion out of the tiniest signs and signifiers, tell someone’s emotional state from the way the dirt crunches under the tires as they drive in. By the time they’ve closed the door and started walking, you know how their entire day went (and it’s different for each person).

Every action means something, communicates some tiny clue on whether or not there’s a storm brewing, how much danger is on the way, if you have enough time to get away or if moving will set things off faster if you responding will catalyze a faster break.

It’s maddening because then you separate, you go somewhere else with people you’ve never known and you Don’t Know the Signs. You read everything they do with absolute scrutiny and construct these grand narratives. They turned their head this way and looked there there and there before answering so that means this. You can never turn it off. You just hope to adjust. Eventually.

something people don't utilize in character design enough is the the teeth. And i'm not talking about vampire fangs or monster teeth, but more about crooked teeth, chipped teeth, missing teeth, yellow teeth, retainers, braces, teeth jewels, grills and stuff of the like. not everyone has a perfect array of teeth

also wanna say, they shouldn't just be used on your crazy old men or villians or stereotypes or whatever. give your main character crooked teeth. give your love interests braces. give people a diverse mouth
