There’s not really a clear definition of sexualizing. Would portraying a 17 year old as sexually active be sexualizing them or is it simply portraying real life, since many 17 year olds do in fact have sex? What if a character looks younger than they are? I’ve seen people get hate for drawing nsfw content of certain characters because they’re short and therefore some fans consider them basically children. It’s not as clear-cut as you seem to think.

My point about ff.net is that the initial policy (no 18+ content) was pretty quickly used to get rid of m/m and f/f content as well. It’s an example of how blanket censorship easily oversteps its bounds.

All of the above and also…. Sexualizing children is ABSOLUTELY horrible. What you seem to not realize is, characters are not and cannot be children. They can be representative of children, or look childlike, or act childishly, but they will never actually be children. Not even or especially by dictionary definition, since characters are neither human nor people.

And most anti-antis are adults because we’re functional and secure and experienced enough to know the above, without even a shadow of a doubt. A character will never come anywhere close to a real person in my mind. They are not and never will be sentient. They cannot be hurt, because they are objects. Hypothetical ones, so they can’t even really be damaged the way a physical object can. As I’ve said before, a roomba is more a person than a character. For chrissake, most of the characters people get so upset about are DRAWN, in a very heavily stylized way, to the point that they look nothing LIKE a real child. Our brains are very aware of this, and we’ve been around long enough to, yeah, know for a fact that whatever we wanna make fictional characters go through, it is not relevant to how we treat real people. Because characters represent concepts of hypothetical people the way a token represents me in a game of Monopoly. The two are not equivalent, neither in our minds nor reality.

What you should be asking is “why are so many people who don’t want to read about horrifying shit defensive of other people’s rights to read and write it”, bc that seems like it’d puzzle you way more. If nothing else, if your answer is “every single one of them is secretly a pedophile/abuser” the way you looked like you wanted to imply with this post, you might at least notice how paranoid you sound.

So yeah TL;DR,

sexualizing children is horrible and we 100% agree on that, but characters are never children, nor does any of us treat or think of them equivalently to one.

If you cannot distinguish between a fake person and a real person in your mind, you have much bigger problems than what fiction you consume.

It might be shocking to you but most of society has a firm grasp on the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Antis are the ones trying to intentionally blur the lines for 1) shipping wars 2) finding “accepted” ways to hurl abuse at real people and 3) giving literary things they’re disgusted by an additional “moral” dimension so that their subjective disgust (as fiction firmly falls under amoral) can be perceived as objective disgust. Which leads back to point 1 and 2.

Projecting on fictional characters can sometimes help, but when you start getting literally triggered by the existence of fanworks you disapprove of even existing, then you gotta take a step back and either stop engaging with most or all fanworks of those characters entirely or stop placing your emotional well-being on a hypothetical construct that exists in millions of peoples’ minds, free for them to use as they wish.
