Nubble Light, Cape Neddick, ME

Small adventure this weekend, going up to Maine to see the holiday lights on the Nubble lighthouse at Cape Neddick.  (Preceded by a late lunch at the Maine Diner.)   Very scenic!  Also very cold, my fingertips about froze off while getting pics.  Lots of people there doing the same thing, basically.  (Including a guy with a small drone, which I think was harder to fly in the strong winds than he thought.)  

Below, close up to see the lit-up tree in the house window.  And, a “christmas tree” made of lobster traps, in front of Fox’s Lobster House at the end of the parking lot.  The lighthouse itself is on a small island just off the point, with that channel of water between.  You can’t really get there, and it’s not open to visitors. You can just admire it from the headland.

Very worth the trip.

“...Uh... good news, we found the dog. Bad news... all of Adam is broken.”

The boy in question limps away from his older sister’s doting hands and leans against the doorjamb, expression pained.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

His words are firm, but gentle, as he moves his attention away from the clearly haunted abandoned house in front of him, brown eyes fixed on the young girl trying to hide behind the nearby tree.

“Like, yeah, sure it’s pro’ly gonna be dangerous in there ’n not the best place to spend a school night,” he clarifies, “but you... really shouldn’t be here...”

He turns to face her more completely, and it almost hurts to look at her, like she’s too bright to look at but he also has to squint to see her form in the shadows. There’s something... off... about her, an unshakable sense of something that definitely should not be. It’s wrong. It’s all wrong.

“You know what I’m talkin’ about, right?” he asks, softer this time. “I can tell somethin’ happened, I can see it.” Girls don’t just fall out of the sky with a last name she can’t quite get used to and no family. Even if Adam couldn’t see what was going on, he figures he would have found out eventually.

He also realizes how much of a creep he must sound-- even though it’s not like the two are strangers, they’ve seen each other around fairly frequently-- and so he puts his hands up, placatingly, so as not to freak the kid out. “If you let me know what’s going on, I can try to help you.”

Adam had been out on the beach playing when it happened.

He had never seen a wind storm this bad before, and had certainly never seen one that had kicked up so quickly, unleashing what was either a water spout or whirlpool, with something falling through and caught in the torrents.

Despite the high winds, he had rushed over into the waves, wrapping his arms around whatever it was to get it free. Upon second glance, it wasn’t so much a something as a someone, though he’d never seen anything like them before.

He picked them up and carried them to the shore, laying them down on the sand and shrugging off his jacket to cover them up with. It was cold in the water at this time of year, the wind certainly not helping matters, and he was sure the warmer they were, the sooner they’d wake up.

About a minute or so later, he got his wish.

“Hey, you’re awake!”

The little boy smiled down at the other, moving back a little to give some more space, grateful that the wind had stopped for the time being.

“My name’s Adam,” he introduced himself, “what’s your name? Are you okay?”

The questions aren’t meant unkindly: Adam has been farmed out to the grad students more times than he can count, but it was always because they needed an extra body to help lug equipment to the location or somebody to run down and get their Starbucks order. Not because they wanted someone to help with the finer, more artistic aspects of the shoot itself.

“Sorry,” he apologizes, realizing how that sounded, smile awkward but genuinely grateful, “I mean... yeah, I think natural light an’ a wide aperture is the way to go on this one, you’re right.”

While Adam usually got along with most everyone when he was young, there were always a couple who made life difficult for him-- he was said to have an ‘overactive imagination’, after all, and he wasn’t really sure if the fact that he really was seeing everything he thought he was seeing back then made it any better-- he knows enough from his little brother just how cruel middle schoolers could be.

Upon further examination, though, he can see some familiar tools sticking out of the other’s bag, and he-- no offense-- doesn’t really look like that much of an outdoorsy type.

“But, uh... me too, actually.” He’s been to Seguin Island many times, but this would be the first time he’d be staying overnight, and explicitly for the ghosts. He’s more than a little relieved to find out that he wouldn’t be there completely alone.
