We've all gotten just a bit too comfortable being jerks to strangers on the internet I think
So I've hidden this reply, both because it's obnoxious and because I don't want the person who wrote it being harassed for it, but I need you to understand: I don't know you. We are not friends. This is not fun or cute, we are not sharing a charming joke together. You are just being an asshole.
literally that is what the post is about, I am saying people should be less eager to jump on any chance to be snarky and rude to total strangers on the internet
Major huge ginormous fan of the last two SuperBowl halftime shows being celebrations of culture and looking directly into the camera during the biggest televised event of the year just to say "Fuck fascism, America is mine, too"
Gemini had the fucking GALL to get in my email and summarize a 3-line email, taking up more space than the email did visually.
Hit the āthumbs down.ā Itās like, whatās wrong??? Was our summary wrong? Were there offensive words? Thank you for helping us improve our AI tools :)
I selected āother.ā
Text box popped up. Please elaborate!
Wrote in āI can fucking readā submit comment
Then had to spend several minutes torching all my settings with a flamethrower. Let me be clear: Iām (a lawyer) notoriously picky with my words FOR GOOD REASON (lawyering) so I overwhelmingly reject Gmailās āhelpfulā little assistance. My privacy settings were set to āfull paranoiaā a little less than a year ago when I saw the writing on the wall and knew public defenders could become a target in the future. Better to lock it all down now.
Gemini had crept in there and turned ALL that shit back on. And showed itself by saying āJane Doe says sheās so sorry for your loss and offers to reschedule for Thursday at 3ā over an email from Jane Doe saying āIām so sorry for your loss. We could reschedule for Thursday at 3?ā
Why would I possibly need this. In what universe would I need this. I have eyes and a brain and a reading speed that twenty years ago was measured at 1500 wpm with full comprehension on dense scientific text. Furthermore! If I read a summary, Iām not reading what they actually wrote. If Iām not reading what they actually wrote, Iām not using my own judgment on the words and phrases that they used.
I literally donāt understand why this is helpful at all. This is just avoidance. Using LLMs to write is specifically Not Writing. Using LLMs to summarize is Not Reading. Using them to make art is Avoiding Making Art. Just READ! Just WRITE! I was not put on this fucking planet to not read and not write and not make art! Avoidance is an anxiety symptom and indulging it gives it more power.
If I had an AI to do my most dreaded task, answer the phone for clients, I wouldnāt use it. Because an AI cannot help them. An AI cannot hear the facts of their case, make appropriate noises, be thoughtful and insightful, and then give them a realistic estimate of what could happen in court. I am unique. I cannot be replaced by machine learning. I have style. I have expertise. I donāt hallucinate unless Iām having a really great Friday night and Iām off the clock.
When I need to outsource tasks from my own brain, I give them to people I know can do them and that I trust to do them right.
Fuck, it just sneaks up on you, doesnāt it?? Goddamn Gemini jumpscare right in my own fucking email
I'm so fascinated by people who seem to believe that analyzing media is somehow taking the joy out of it. Like. Do you not enjoy thinking? Does taking stuff apart and figuring out how it works not give you a hit of dopamine? And you get mad when you see people having fun in this way? What a sad, miserable way to engage with the world.
Just got a chatgpt ad where the use case was "can't decide a new years resolution". I can't think of anything more sad than needing a robot to tell you what your own ambitions are. Loser shit.
You ever think about how unified humanity is by just everyday experiences? Tudor peasants had hangnails, nobles in the Qin dynasty had favorite foods, workers in the 1700s liked seeing flowers growing in pavement cracks, a cook in medieval Iran teared up cutting onions, a mom in 1300 told her son not to get grass stains on his clothes, some girl in the past loved staying up late to see the sun rise.
there are scriptures all over the world painstakingly crafted hundreds of years ago with paw prints and spelling mistakes or drawings covering up mistakes. a bunch of teenage girls 2000 years ago gathered to walk around their hometown, getting fast food and laughing with their friends. two friends shared blankets before people lived in houses. a mother ran a fine comb through her childās hair and told it to stop squirming sometime in the 1000s. there are covered up sewing mistakes in couture dresses from the 1800s, some poor roman burnt their food so well past recognition that they just buried the entire pot. there are broken dishes hidden in gardens of people no one even remembers anymore
children eleven thousand years ago enjoyed jumping around in puddles made from the footprints of a giant sloth. children loved muddy puddles so long ago there were still megafauna alive
Thereās a record of an emperor of Japan in the 9th century talking about his cat - how pretty it is, and how it stalks birds and curls up in a circle and meows mournfully for company and escaped its collar. All completely normal ordinary cat things. And then it ends with him sayingĀ āit is superior to all other catsā. I am delighted to be united across 1200 years with this fellow cat owner with exactly the same feelings about his cat that I have about mine.
meanwhile the irony of all the speculation and pressure around the heated rivalry actorsā sexualities is not at all lost on me. like you have a book series and then a tv show adaptation where ācoming out is an active threat to your livelihood, which is precarious on the best of days and you will realistically only have said livelihood for like twenty years if everything goes ridiculously wellā AND āeven if you personally as a public figure are comfortable and willing to take the risk of coming out, you have to consider the impact of that kind of pressure and speculation on your loved ones, including your partner, who will have little shot of anonymity or privacy ever again, before you take that stepā are MAJOR THEMES and people take that and go āso why arenāt these public figures who just want to do their jobs telling me every detail of the private lives??ā Well, see, youāre not gonna believe this but
in 2026 DO NOT ask yourself whether your art is GOOD
instead ask:
is it SINCERE
was it CATHARTIC
was it FUN TO MAKE
is it MADE BY ME
and don't forget to stay silly
Spoiler-free, but one thing I really like about Knives Out 3 is that it shows a wheelchair user who 1) needs her chair in order to function, 2) CAN still walk and does so when the pain of it is less inconvenient than moving her chair around, and 3) has to deal with people being shocked that she can walk. A lot of wheelchair users are still capable of some movement and get treated like they're faking when they stand to reach something, so it was cool to see that just casually represented
Since Markiplier is the husband of an Atiny and has sung Ateez during one of his videos before, I'm just gonna drop this here and say:
This man made a whole-ass movie based on an indie horror game, brought in the original creator of the game to assist in script writing, brought in the original video game soundtrack composer to create the movie score, funded the project by himself, brought in his own crew he's worked with on all his previous large-scale filming projects, and built a goddamn render farm in his own bathroom because he edited the entire movie by himself and needed custom cooling after his AC blew up.
On top of that, he also halted production while the SAG-AFTRA strike was going on to show support, turned down a role in 'Five Nights at Freddy's' so he could keep working on this project, and broke the world record for most fake blood ever used on a movie set, beating out 'Evil Dead' which used 190,000 liters - and he even got so much of it into his eye that it got him sent to the hospital during the shooting of this first teaser:
And now, as someone who's been a fan of this guy for over a decade, I can tell you he really, really doesn't know how to half-ass shit, which is why I know this movie will be fucking incredible, and now that tickets are finally on sale with the release of the final trailer, I better be seeing them selling out like crazy so we can get international screenings, because I DIDN'T WAIT TWO WHOLE FUCKING YEARS FOR THIS, JUST SO I CAN'T WATCH IT IN A GODDAMN THEATER!
I also think choosing the line "I just wanna live... is that so wrong? Why doesn't anybody else want that?" is a really gut-wrenching way to end a horror movie trailer and says a lot about where this movie's focus will lie - fear, isolation, a desperate need for survival, and honestly, that's the direction I was really hoping this would go in.
guillermo del toro said so many insightful and funny things last night at the frankenstein q&a that i started taking notes. these are all direct quotes. i love this man.
Nobody who voted to honor the dead Nazi should be elected to political office ever again
Losing followers for this again and I want everybody seeing themselves out to know I literally hate you. You're an unprincipled, totally depraved son of a bitch and you stand for nothing. Go on then and git.
I still firmly believe that Tatiana Maslany should have won more awards for her work in Orphan Black, she is literally like half of the cast and yet each character she plays is distinct and different enough to tell when one is pretending to be another and so on and so forth
You could literally believe that each character is played by different actors if it weren't for the fact that they all have the same face and you wouldn't be able to find that many actors who look alike
I definitely wrote a tumblr essay about this back in the day (2017) but Iām not sure if it still exist on this account, hopefully I have a screenshot somewhere but seriously this woman is so versatile I have such a hard time believing that anyone of the clones are played by the same person. Tatiannaās range is off the charts why sheās not an a list actor is beyond me but I will stand by this statement until the day I die
I mean yeah we can yassify Lex Luthor and talk about hes sooo gay for Superman.
Or MAYBE we can talk about how Lex Luthor in Superman (2025) is a clear parallel for Musk, and the president of Borovia is a parallel for Trump, in what was clearly a commentary on billionaires and their role in war politics that was written before but now feels more apt because of recent events.
Maybe we can talk about how the "where's the dog" scene mimics the way conservatives (and terfs, too) provoke the people they don't like into an emotional reaction so they can seem like the one being "reasonable."
Maybe we can talk about how the story Luthor spun about Superman "grooming" the people of earth is just like the way conservatives frame immigrants and the queer community to fearmonger.
Maybe we can about the guy in Luthor's war room who changed his mind and pointed Mister Terrific to the right computer, saving minutes that saved lives.
Maybe we can talk about how Eve, an abuse victim, helped save the day with one small act of rebellion that seemed frivilous or useless until Lois looked deeper.
Maybe we can talk about how Lois's superpower is research and investigation and journalism to uncover the truth behind the media facade luthor put up.
Maybe we can talk about how Superman's greatest power isn't his strength or his brain but his Kindness, and how much he cares about every creature great and small, and how that care inspired Element Man to reach for the goodness within himself and do the right thing.
All my love and respect to the people who do ship them, ship and let ship is a rule I live by. I'm just amazed that none of the things that I truly love about this film made it onto my dash before I saw it for the first time tonight. And I wanna talk about them, because I think more people need to hear about them
Potentially hot take but one of the reasons we need art and music in schools is that, taught correctly, they are ideal avenues for teaching kids how to do something, kinda suck at it, keep going anyways and improve over time.
And THAT is one of the most valuable skill sets a human being can have. THAT is the skill set that unlocks soooooo many others.
A LOT of people I see with anxiety and depression do not have this skill set. To suck at something is a threat. Proof that they are doomed to suck at it forever. And then, often, that either THEY suck forever or the task must be stupid/useless/pointless (whence we get AI art fans who have decided actually making art is pointless and degrading the labor and skills of others is fine because these are useless skills).
Or you get the freeze- the inability to try things in case you fail. The sudden lancing shame and humiliation or hopelessness. The sense that anything you haven't learned by now you can't learn. Which is so heartbreaking and so untrue.
I just hate it.
"What if I write it and it's bad" "what if I draw it and it's bad" "what if I play it and it sounds bad" DOING IT BAD IS HOW YOU LEARN TO DO IT GOOD! You can't skip the process of leaning and the process is FUN if you let it be what it needs to be!
