Iām lowkey kind of obsessed with the implication in The Testaments that there is something wrong in the rest of the world that is being put right in Gilead in some way please hear me out spoilers obviously below.
There are 2 main instances across both the series that immediately come to mind when thinking about the rates of fertility in other countries. The first being in The Handmaids Tale when the Mexican dignitary comes to visit Commander Waterford and says there hasnāt been a live birth in her city (or Mexico as a whole maybe I canāt entirely remember) in several years. Thatās not just that itās difficult to get pregnant and carry to term- it implies itās near impossible. The second time being in The Testaments when Daisy tells us she not only doesnāt have her period, she doesnāt expect to, nobody does and she only knows one girl who has. Once again this does not indicate a difficulty with fertility, it implies an almost entirely infertile population.
In The Handmaids Tale the implication is made that the Mexicans believe the difference in fertility is not a gift from God in reward for how they live in Gilead, but just a result of better organisation. They have treated fertile women as a finite commodity and therefore organised them accordingly into a conveyor belt of systemic pregnancy until their bodies canāt take it anymore. The Mexicans want to benefit from this organisation of resource and we are encouraged to think similarly as an audience- to begin to question just how far do the ends justify the means. Weāre supposed to think about how inhumanely we can justify treating women like this if it would literally save the human race to do so. This works but at what cost.
The Testaments turns that idea on its head though. Thereās a heavy implication that most of the plums will get their periods before they finish school with only an unlucky minority becoming prunes. This is backed up by the only plum we see who doesnāt turn green being Shu out of quite a large cast. Obviously the presence of a period alone does not indicate the ability to carry a pregnancy to term as we see in Penny, but it does give some kind of hope that they might.
Iām going to take this a step further and say itās heavily implied that whatever is causing the problem is environmental and that, if this thing is removed from the environment of a child young enough, the body can heal at least some of the damage. This is exemplified by Daisy who starts her period a few months after moving to Gilead and living in their environment. You could argue that Daisy getting her period is coincidence- that she would have started her period that month whether at home in Toronto or in Gilead. However I think the chances of this being the case when you consider the statistical likihood of her gaining her period in Toronto vs the statistical likelihood of her doing so in Gilead is low. Can we really just say itās a coincidence that Daisy did not have her period in the place nobody did and then got in the place most girls do?
You could also argue that all of these girls in Gilead were born of women who were still fertile, implying that there is some kind of genetic component to fertility in this world. Daisy could also easily fit this theory as we know she was born in Gilead. However, im not sure I buy into that as technically all people have been born from a fertile person and I canāt see why it would be so genetically different for that person to be in Gilead or not.
Whatās so fascinating about this is the idea that Gilead is the very epitome of Wrong Equation Right Answer. That all the praying and the violence and the Old Testament God Bothering hasnāt done anything; but the fact they donāt use plastic might just be solving the issue on its own. I think it also shows that the very thing they think saved them will be their downfall. They donāt understand what theyāre doing right so they canāt replicate it. The organisation of āresourceā wonāt help enough in the long term to solve the problem on its own. If they were willing to approach the solution with curiosity they might be able to work it out and save the world; but their religious fanaticism stops them. Moreso, their cruelty prevents other countries and developed societies from trying Gileadās environmental policies to resolve their own issues. God might have saved them; but their absolute cruelty has damned them all the same.
The TestamentsĀ S01E10 "Secateurs"
Spoilers for 'the testments' season 1 final
The actress that plays Bekah? Mattea Conforti? She HAS TO win some type of award for that final. She is truly PHENOMENAL.
And the scene after she kissed Agnes? I NEED a Gothic painting. She looked as dead as a CORPSE when she laid her head of Agnes shoulder, and Agnes looking up into the light with such care??????? ARTISTS PLS š
ik im on the minority but i need the writers to give me daisygarth. im so sorry i swear i tried with agnesgarth but they're not giving what i thought they were going to give; idk if its just the actors not having romantic chemistry or the writers not doing their job developing their relationship but its not working.
daisy and garth have so much chemistry and i know that the writers are doing something with them bc that scene in ep 5 when he got closer to her and she got all nervous???? garth did that like 5 seconds before the commanders started leaving that room. he deadass just got close to her bc he wanted to. then when she's asking how he's going to get out of his marriage with becka and he explains that he never expected love in the way she's referring to, all while his eyes flickered between her eyes and lips?? there was a vibe and daisy felt it too, that's why she had to look away. and then ep 9 when his voice and eyes go all soft because he was worried sick for her???
im sorry agnesgarth but youre BONES. i think garth does care about agnes because she's such a sweet girl but not #likethat and agnes is not in love with him lets be honest she doesnt know him at all. he's just a fantasy.
