He’ll defeat you using the power of love and his sentient scimitar that’s honestly just a sweet little baby who wants cuddles from its owner’s husband. You mention butterflies, and all of Heaven starts quaking in their boots. He held an umbrella for a flower one time, and that’s like- his title now. So how did yamikawaii originate? This is a question I have because I love this specific style the most out of any style popular within menhera fashion. The dark color palettes are my favorite when it comes to menhera fashion, and it got me wondering how it originated?

My understanding is that yamikawaii’s history began as a direct opposite to yumekawaii. Yumekawaii started off as an umbrella term for anything cute/pastel so that people could call their outfit one thing rather than having to rattle off every cute jfashion label their outfit was inspired by. However, as yamikawaii started forming as the antithesis of yumekawaii they developed a sort of yin yang relationship; yumekawaii become “mostly dreamy with a little bit of sickness (yami)” and yamikawaii became “mostly sick and dark with a little bit of dreaminess/cuteness.”

Regardless of how you feel about him, Bisuko Ezaki had a major influence on how yamikawaii and menhera would come to look, as well as the fact that they are closely associated with one another. His Menhera-chan manga and its popularity brought a lot of attention to the term “menhera” but also caused it to become very associated with yamikawaii’s tendency to focus on the external elements of mental health, such as self harm and medicine, rather than the internal thoughts and feelings emphasized by the actual menhera community. This is where the split between “yamikawaii” and “menhera” as fashions and communities comes from. Yamikawaii fashion (as opposed to yamikawaii menhera, which is just menhera fashion in a darker color palette mostly) is about the external things that can create a striking visual.

The differences in the two communities is exemplified when we talk about the infamous “wrist-cut bracelet incident.” For those unaware, basically Bisuko Ezaki collaborated with the brand Conpeitou to make a bracelet that makes it look like you’ve cut yourself and are actively bleeding through a graphic on top of a clear bracelet. It was discontinued initially due to controversy, only to be rereleased many years later (one of many things Ezaki has been criticized for). The majority of the criticism came from the menhera community, while the yamikawaii community seemingly didn’t mind as much. This shows how not all people interested in yamikawaii (sickly cute aesthetic) have necessarily been interested in menhera (mental health topics and education), even though yamikawaii’s conception is so closely tied to menhera. Bisuko Ezaki also majorly impacted yamikawa’s history when he attempted to copyright the term “yamikawaii” in 2019, which would give him the power to get people in legal trouble if they sold anything while using the term. This angered people, because yamikawaii already existed before Ezaki and menhera-chan, despite them popularizing it. For a while many people abandoned the term “yamikawaii” for non-commericialized terms. One popular one was marekawaii, short for “nightmare kawaii” to be a more direct opposite to yumekawaii. It didn’t specifically replace yamikawaii, as it doesn’t have the medical motifs, but instead focused on blues and purples and loosely used themes surrounding “cute nightmares” (purely medical motifs moved towards medikawaii, and I suppose people who actually cared about the mental health part would have found their way to menhera). I’m not sure if the trademark was ever approved or if it’s still active, but yamikawaii has survived despite the blow it took around this time while marekawaii seems to have mostly died.

In more recent years, the appearance of yamikawaii has significantly shifted. Medical motif and pastel elements aren’t required, and aren’t even the most popular things in the fashion. It seems to refer generally to anything dark and edgy in casual fashions, similar to how yumekawaii largely refers to anything pastel and cute. You’ll find that in most western circles people still mostly think of the old yamikawaii when they hear the term though.

everyone treats susie like a ticking time bomb. she’s a Bad kid, she’s Scary, she’s Mean. even a lot of the adults in her life act as though she’s a reactive animal.

susie likes toriel a lot, but is still scared enough of losing her approval that she goes out of her way to censor herself in toriel’s presence. even ralsei still sort of implicitly puts susie down/chides her for being too rowdy or crass. kris is pretty consistently on her wavelength now that they’re friends, but it was rough at the very beginning.

right from the getgo, tenna can take a joke. she immediately wants to kill him in-game and he says “get in line, kid!” not only reframing the situation as a joke at his own expense, but also unintentionally validating her frustration by normalizing it.

it’s no wonder susie was the first one to decide that tenna is cool and fun. part of it is definitely susie’s personal growth and more positive overall mental state allowing her to make friends faster, but i think an equally relevant aspect of their connection is tenna’s ability to just roll with her. he doesn’t react to her abrasiveness in bad faith. he doesn’t ever take it personal. unlike the vast majority of people in her life, susie doesn’t feel like she has to worry about doing something Bad and losing tenna’s approval. the Bad parts of her are the ones he thought were fun and engaging from the start. idk i like that they get along so well. her unstable but fun uncle who has multiple pending charges of copyright infringement against him <3
