I wanted to wait until the verdict was reached before saying anything about this case. Today that happened, when Vickrum Digwa was found guilty of using his Sikh ceremonial knife to murder 18-year-old Henry Nowak. This was more than a tragedy, more than another awful crime. It was an atrocity that indicts not only the killer himself but the institutions of our society. Nowak had been stabbed five times. He was bleeding to death. Passers-by heard him say “I’m dying”. And yet he was handcuffed by the police after Digwa falsely accused him of being racially abusive. What a dystopic scene: a boy taking his last breaths being treated as a criminal on the basis of an evil lie. And all the politicians who took the knee for George Floyd when he died 4,000 miles away — Keir Starmer included — will say nothing for this lad. A boy defamed as he died, manhandled by the state, and then forgotten by his leaders. A truly damning commentary on the state of our nation. RIP Henry 🇬🇧

It's an art history/architecture joke.
For a long time, it was believed that the famous Greek/Roman statues that you see in museums were supposed to just be unpainted marble, but within the past sixty years or so, archeologists have discovered microscopic flecks of paint on the statues and realized that they were actually painted and the paint just came off in the intervening couple thousand years--or was intentionally rubbed off by archeologists and curators of centuries past, for the sake of making them "look right". And, as is described in the tweet pictured above, people have managed to analyze what little bits of paint remain and determine what some of these statues were supposed to look like. They were actually painted with bright colours and patterns.
Brutalism is a 20th-century style of architecture which eschews decoration in favour of bare, unpainted brick or concrete. The joke is in suggesting that the buildings aren't really supposed to look like that, the way that the ancient statues aren't supposed to look like that, even though all Brutalist buildings were built within living memory rather than thousands of years ago. (And it's possibly also poking fun at Brutalism as a style, for being so intentionally austere.) The buildings in the above photos have been edited to match the statues, with bright colours and patterns and Ancient Greek-style murals.
The one thing that I'll add to this is that there was, for a long time, a concentrated effort to suppress the idea of marble statues having been painted. Even as the evidence was piling up, the idea has faced a lot of pushback, because there's been a long history in the art world of touting the beauty of "unblemished marble" and the idea that it's some kind of objective ideal of sculpture, which was always based in some faulty ideas, but which a lot of people are unwilling to let go.
It's not really relevant to the joke, but it's important to acknowledge that there has been cultural erasure going on for a long time regarding the idea of marble statues being painted.
