kaveh finds photos of haitham's family.
-
Kaveh finds the album while he's cleaning the bedroom.
The first photograph is of a family of three, the mother beautiful but unsmiling, the father stiff-faced, the baby expressionless.
Such an unsettling family, who could it be but Alhaitham and his late parents?
(As for why he's cleaning the bedroom... "Please let me tidy up!" he'd begged. "I keep tripping over things!"
"I've already told you," Haitham had said, with an expression that suggested he was about to quit the conversation. "You can do whatever you want to the house."
"What, so that... includes cleaning your room? Going through your things? Hey, don't—don't sleep, answer my question!"
Too late. Haitham's eyes were already closed. He did hate repeating himself. Kaveh was left to stare at Haitham's messy room, wondering if it meant anything that the other man really didn't seem to care about Kaveh just... rifling through his things. That he was allowed.)
Back then, Kameras were rare. Haitham's family must have been well-connected indeed. It's a black-and-white photo. Time has leached the crispness of the values away and yellowed the photograph.
someone get these men some band-aids for their ouchies please

this is how alhaitham falls in love
-
Haitham's first impression of Kaveh is that he is a well-meaning idiot.
Their first meeting is Kaveh acting as the knight saving the damsel in distress, except that Haitham was not in distress at all.
When they part, Kaveh is huffy and embarrassed, and Haitham is a little bemused, a little bewildered.
It should have ended there, but it didn't.
They keep meeting.
For all their dissimilarities, their daily habits have a number of points of convergence. For example, both Haitham and Kaveh prefer manual research to overreliance on the Akasha. For example, while Kaveh likes soup—an unfortunate failing—they both prefer a particular cafeteria stall because the auntie there always doles out an extra serving. For example, they both like studying in the gardens, Haitham because he likes napping in the sun, Kaveh because the surroundings inspire him.
And so. They keep meeting. And Kaveh is unrelentingly friendly.
"Hello," he says. "Hi," he says. "Have you read this paper on embedded systems?" he asks.
"... Hello," Haitham says. "Hm," he says. "From the recently published collection on ancient mechanisms? Yes," he replies.

#kavetham - alhaitham has cat ears and tail - sequel to "pet your cat", but as the plot of THAT fic is just "hainyan gets dicked down", you don't have to read it - kaveh gives alhaitham a gift - porny slice of life
This fic is explicit.

haitham goes to kaveh's graduation ceremony.
-
Alhaitham shouldn't have come, but—
"You better be sitting front row," Kaveh had said, once upon a time. "I won't ask you to cheer or clap or anything, but at least bring roses!"
That was Before.
-
Despite Kaveh's wishes, Alhaitham has no choice in the seating. He sits where his ticket designates: by the empty chair meant for Kaveh's mother, in the middle of the hall.
The people on stage—the Akademiya's newest batch of graduates—are all excitement. Kaveh is one of the younger ones; in Sumeru, graduation is no easy feat.
Alhaitham knows he has made a mistake when Kaveh sees him.
All the happiness drains from Kaveh's expression. His face bleaches. He stills. Even from a distance, Alhaitham can feel the fury emanating from him like a physical thing, reaching across the hall, past the sea of people, to grip Alhaitham by the heart and ask—
How dare you show up here?
I promised, Alhaitham protests in the stricken silence of his mind. We promised.
But they also promised to graduate together. They promised to finish a project together. They promised to work together after graduation.
Now, Alhaitham's own graduation is delayed; his name withdrawn from their project; and as for working together...
Alhaitham grips the flowers in his hand. The paper crumples.
The promises they made together, he realises, mean nothing. They have faded away, as bones turn to dust. He should not have come. But he... he—
imagine if their fallout started with this 🥹

haitham and kaveh knew each other as babies. kaveh reminisces about baby!haitham.
-
"You used to be so cute," Kaveh said. "A wriggling... squirmy little worm."
"You think wriggling, squirmy worms are cute?" Haitham said, dry.
"With... these BIG... green eyes!" Kaveh said, drunkenly. He threw his arms wide, as if that might illustrate how lovely and glimmering and big Haitham's eyes used to be. Not that they weren't still lovely and glimmering. And green. But.
"You're spilling your wine," Haitham said, rescuing Kaveh's glass. Plucked it straight from Kaveh's hand... and then drank it. He was, he rationalized, stopping Kaveh from getting even more stupidly drunk. "Let's go home," he said.
"Go to your home, you mean," Kaveh slurred. Like a boneless creature, he slumped against Haitham's side.
"Our home," Haitham said, but Kaveh's eyes were closed. If he was listening, he was pretending not to.
Kaveh re-invigorated himself on the way back, which was annoying. Haitham preferred just carrying Kaveh. ("You carry me like a sack of potatoes!" Kaveh had once accused. "Well, yes," Haitham had replied.) It was easier than coaxing a drunk, but conscious Kaveh home. Despite his slight build, he was very strong, and when intoxicated he often forgot to control his strength. He might go here, go there, go everywhere, and how was Haitham supposed to stop him? He'd have more luck corralling a sumpter beast.
Luckily, at least this time, Kaveh was stuck on the topic of baby Alhaitham. "You were THIS big!" he cried, demonstrating with his hands. "When we met! Tiny! A worm!"
"Would you stop calling me a worm? No, this way, our house is this way—"
