we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

today in "google AI is fucking useless because it hallucinates things that never happened", i bought a couple CVS thermometers that have both been acting up, tried to search if there had been a problem with the whole product line:
there is no record of this product recall. it did not happen. the date "feb 8 2024" is the date someone listed a thermometer for sale on ebay.
Google's trying to save you the time spent clicking on a site full of AI-generated SEO garbage by presenting the AI-generated garbage right up front! Such efficiency.

I was under the impression that we did know why: AI isn't actually a brain and can't actually think or understand information, so it has no concept of something being true or not, or what markers indicate truth or falsity, or how to synthesize information. It's putting a bunch of words in a jar, shaking the jar, and then dumping it out, and acting like that means the jar knows how to talk.
Like, in this case, OP asked for information about a recall. The AI knows that, throughout the entire internet, the word "recall" usually is surrounded by information like a date or a number, so it gives you a date and a number. It doesn't know what a date is or what it's for or what it means. (It also apparently doesn't know the difference between "recall" as in "removing a dangerous product from the shelves" and "recall" as in "remembering," since it smooshes the two together)
I think what I want to get into with the "Anyone can do harm." thing that I keep beating yall over the head with is that literally anyone, anyone at all can do harm it's not "in your DNA" to be an abuser or written in the stars that you'll be a predator. Whatever image you have of an abuser in your head, drop it and replace it with your favorite person in the world and you'll probably be closer to the truth than you realize. It's easy to address harm when it's coming from someone you already hate. I see it happen all the time. Someone you couldn't stand for no real reason does something heinous then all of a sudden here comes the avalanche of "I always knew they were a fucked up individual." No, you didn't. There is no possible way you could have known, you just already didn't fuck with them before they started doing something you could use to justify your hatred of them. I'm guilty of it too! I'm petty, mean, vindictive, and yes! I'm way quicker to believe something bad about someone I hate versus someone I love because I'm human. Still, y all gotta learn to move past that initial "Well, they were always nice to me!" gut feeling and understand that nobody truly knows anyone and anyone can be capable of anything. Even victims. Even you.

As a fat person, one thing that would be awesome is if thin people could just get over it. People are fat sometimes. It's fine. Chill. We're not a problem you need to solve, we're just a bunch of people who deserve social equality.
I'm not saying you should be all "I don't see size", just that I'm tired of being met with some form of "but I can't just let you be this way". Yes, you can! I can be fat all day and you can just not worry about it! Look at us go!

disliking ai art because "it has no heart" is stupid to me because i recently realized that my art is, in my own words, "soulless". i don't put much thought into what i draw, i just want the thing to look pretty. i don't consider my art as having interesting ideas behind it. what makes it any better than ai then? i guess only the fact that i can make conscious decisions about what i draw so I don't acidentally draw two left hands and such. but i believe that if ai advances it will be able to make such decisions at least to some degree. the problem is not how much of a soul/heart the art has.
I'd say that in general the topic of something lacking a soul or heart is just... so annoying to me, because i call myself soulless and loveless due to my mental health and demeanor. and then i remember the majority of people won't hesitate to call everything they deem bad as soulless or heartless. eh.
