Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”

“WHY QUESTION?????”

Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.

Only here the fish can talk and keeps asking you to make it vodka.

Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.

Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.

And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.

But seriously, when we got our property, it was all just…grass. A sterile grass moonscape, like a billion other yards. With two big old maple trees. Just grass and maples, that was it. 

But then I got my grubby little paws on it, and I immediately stopped fertilizing, spraying, and bagging up grass clippings and leaves. I ripped up sod and put in flowers and vegetables. I put down nice thick blankets of mulch around the flowers and vegetables. 

When I first was sweating my way through stripping sod, I saw a grand total of 1 worm and 0 ladybugs. The ground was compacted into something that would bend shovel blades. 

Now, six years later, I can’t dig a planting hole without turning up fourteen earthworms, and there are so many ladybugs here. Not the invasive asian lady beetles; native ladybugs. They winter over in the mulch and in the brush pile. I see thousands of them. 

The soil is soft and rich. There are birds that come to eat, and bees of many sorts.

Like this is something that you, yourself, can absolutely change. This is something that you, personally, can make a difference in.

Like, last year I watched no fewer than twenty-nine monarch caterpillars grow up on my milkweed and fly away as butterflies. I watched swallowtails and moths grow. There are hummingbirds fighting over flowers now.

I did that. Me. You can do the same.

So for those who aren't aware, this is a scam going around on AO3 where people are attempting to build a rapport so you will commission "art" from them. They can't do that in the comments because it's against the ToS, so they try to get you to go somewhere else.

There's a fairly good chance it's also a bot talking not a person. Some are more clever than others though, so who knows.

The interaction often starts off as either a question or a concern to encourage a reply. E.g. hope you update soon etc. They may mention relevant character names. They often try and build a rapport before trying to get you somewhere else.

In a climate of declining fandom interaction, this is obviously sucky for writers who are hungry for feedback and community. Just be careful, and don't purchase a fic commission unless you know the artist well, because in cases like this what you will probably get is AI slop, if you get anything at all once you've paid.

For anyone who is relatively new to fandom, here is a brief crash course around fanart culture as it used to be and still should be:

Scenario 1:

A fan artist reads a fanfic, feels inspired and either asks the writer if it's okay to make art for it or, much more commonly, simply makes art, posts it publicly and TAGS THE WRITER and adds a link to the fic with a comment saying something along the lines of 'This story inspired me to make this art'. No money is involved. The author usually loves the artist and art to pieces and feels incredibly flattered. There is no higher compliment than your own art inspiring someone else's.

Scenario 2:

The fic writer has a specific scene in mind they would like to see art of and has a fan artist whose style they like. They approach the artist about doing a commission. Money may be exchanged if the artist takes paid commissions. Some artists may decide to do it for free, but that's their choice. The artist may also refuse if they currently or in general do not take commissions, so the author may either have to wait until commissions are open or find another artist.

That's it.

Those are the two ways this works.

Artists don't usually approach writers asking them to commission art. That's not how fandom culture works. A fan artist may advertise their work in general and announce that commissions are open, they may even tag people who expressed an interest in the past, but they don't approach individual people in the comments of their fics to trick them into paying for fanart. Anyone who does is either extremely new to fandom and copying from scammers because they think this is how it works, or they are a scammer.

When a small kid decks their shit and starts screaming, it's apparently useful to ask them "are you more scared or more hurt?" because they might actually pause the shrieking to understand that adults might not automatically know what they are feeling, and that they can and should use words to communicate whether they need emotional support or medical attention.

I wonder if it could be applied to tumblr. Asking shrieking people "are you disagreeing with what OP said, or are you mad about the way they worded it?"

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
