ok so let’s talk a bit about jobs vs passion. my last fulltime job was at a big game development studio; the kind of job you’re (supposedly) passionate about. most of my colleagues adored the games we made, and so they didn’t care that the company had a major diversity problem, that our salaries were below average, that we didn’t get overtime compensation yet stayed ‘til 11PM more often than what’s healthy, and that the company promoted an unhealthy alcohol culture. because we were passionate. this was the kind of job you grow up dreaming about; don’t go throwing it away because some colleagues are harrassing you or because you get no recognition for your efforts!

for more than a year I was tired. stressed. in constant pain. my anxiety was through the roof. I worked on these “dream projects” and I felt dead inside.

when I quit that job I started freelancing as a writer. I got some really good jobs. I also got a bunch of small-time, low-paid, “hey at least your name is on it so isn’t it enough to pay 10$ for this text?” kind of jobs.

with the typical millenial housing situation of an apartment that I could barely afford on a fulltime pay and a constant stream of job offers that were underpaid I spent four months doing what I love, while constantly overwhelmed by stress. my insomnia got really bad, and when I managed to fall asleep I would dream about my bank balance. I would dream of losing whatever stability I had left in my life, simply because I couldn’t afford a “normal adult life”.

and so, today I got a job. it’s a fairly standard QA job at a medium sized game development studio. unlike any other game companies I’ve been at they offer humane working conditions. they don’t expect me to show up too early and stay too late because I’m passionate. the hours are nine to five, and they disapprove of overtime. the pay is slightly above average, and I get health benefits. I’ve been through several interviews, and at no point has someone tried to belittle my career or tried to convince me to work for less than I’m worth.

for the first time in many years of my career, I’m happy. I’m at ease. I applied for this job because I wanted to get away from the passionate part of the industry. I wanted a job where I could go home at five and dedicate my freetime to my own writing projects. I wanted to work at a place that didn’t eat my heart and soul and energy as I contributed to projects that wouldn’t even bear my name in the end credits.

so what I’m trying to say is that there’s nothing wrong with having a “normal” job. you’re not giving up on your dreams if you take a job outside your main interests. if it offers stability in your life, it’s enough.

This really resonates with me because I left the architectural industry last year. The hours were unreasonable, work stressful and devolved into the new projects filling me with dread. My boss kept hinting I wasn’t doing enough, I wasn’t passionate enough… I finally left, and after a difficult half year, I finally found a job outside the industry. It is not a dream job, and it is not where my passion lies, but the work lets breathe. And I tell you, I now value “breathing” over “making my dream come true” any day.

if you have a job that you can do reasonably well without intense stress and leave at the office when you leave, you can actually spend as much free time as you like Making Your Dream Happen like, yeah, you can settle down in a cafe on sundays and write your novel, because you have that time carved out and you can afford it. you can put extra money towards materials for your sculpting project. save up for a kiln or fancy paints or whatever. get a gopro and convince your friends to act in your arthouse zombie movie on the weekend because it’ll be fun. dreams can be dreamed on many levels. jobs only have to be successful on one level, and that is the level where you make enough money to live your goddamn life.

Academia is really bad about this. “Passionate” is conflated with “willing to work 60-70 hours/week, move anywhere in the country for a new job once a year, live apart from your significant other for years at a time, put your family life on hold, etc etc.” If you’re not willing to do all that, you just don’t want it badly enough. Fuck that. Fuck any employer who thinks that way.

Aliens would probably have fundamentally different responses to trauma than humans would,like- their brains. would be so fundamentally different. at a basic chemical and structural level we’d have to relearn everything, in this scenario the alien species is REALLY BAD at continuing to function with even a slightly impaired brain, and deals with it with LOTS OF BABIES, Oh yeah great grandpa died three years back when he got really surprised and WHAT DO YOU MEAN,THAT A HUMAN GOT STABBED THROUGH THE HEAD AND CONTINUED TO LIVE I DON’T BELIEVE YOU THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, I bet they are all pregnant all the time and when they randomly die the baby eats their way out of the corpse, they are insectoid and look a lot like praying manti and they REALLY FREAK OUT THEIR HUMAN FRIENDS THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENS, there is a sort of generational memory that happens which is how they managed to develop tech at all being so fragile, so when the creatures get depressed or homesick or manic and die it’s not like their human friends have lost them forever, except for how it sort of is, (via @songofsunset)

The humans stare at the alien and just. slowly start to figure out what the alien is saying. The alien shuffles nervously, their six spindly legs making a skritching noise that echoes in the cold chapel. Finally, the kindest of the humans takes the alien aside and-

‘hey. so. Us humans don’t come back when we die. Not like you do.’

‘what? No, but you clearly talk about reincarnation, and-’

‘Those are just stories, Six. When humans die, we’re gone. We don’t come back.’

The alien laughs ‘No, see, cuz that would mean that- that would mean. That Megan- Megan is-’ The alien cuts off the hissing noise that is their equivalent of a sob. ‘I have to go.’

The alien spends a week in their spaceship, the only place they can send communication to their Mother. When they come back, their carapace is a glistening new shade of red, and they’ve ended up as a different gender. When the lab adviser asks them how they are feeling about Megan-

‘Megan? Oh, yes, my previous version was very fond of Megan.’ The alien cocks their head, like a particularly thoughtful bird. ‘I suppose that I regret her loss. She was a valuable member of the team.’

The lab adviser lets this be- they are aliens after all. But later, when lab hours are done, the adviser notices Six double and triple-checking all the lab equipment, especially- well. The accident that took Megan will never happen again.

The book is never returned.

Now imagine the flip side: Sevan finds out his human friend is due to have a baby in six months. Six months! He asks, and finds that no, there’s no way to delay a human birth. In six months, a new version of his friend will emerge. Will they still like space operas? What about visiting that smoothie place in quadrant 6? Will they even still want to be friends? His friend asks him to be visit the baby, after it’s born. Of course, of course he will. It’s the least he can do. There’s always that vulnerable phase after birth when you haven’t got the hang of the new motor controls, and everyone needs a helping palp for the first few months. The night he hears that the new baby has been born, he wails quietly and recites the qualities of his friend that he will miss the most. Three days later, he gathers his resolve and knocks on the hatch of his friend’s place. Strangely, the access panel hasn’t been lowered - rude. He’ll make sure that’s one of the first things changed. His friends partner opens the door and lets him in and there - there is his friend,looking tired but well, a miniature copy of herself held in her arms. Imagine his joy when he finds out that not only will he get to spend longer with his current friend, but there will be another friend to get to know!

This was Coran as the sleep chamber opened, right before he awoke and leapt out. We know Allura was already asleep because her father did that, and we know that King Alfor is…wherever he is. That means that Coran was the one who maneuvered the castle into its position on Arras, likely after a long and danger-fraught journey to escape the Galra. Coran was the one who made sure that the castle was ready to be shut down for at that point an unknown amount of time. He did that all alone in the castle, knowing that his entire planet was gone and the only other person who would be there when he awoke - if he ever did - was Princess Allura. Who knows how long the whole shutting down process took. Probably several hours, if not days. All that time, Coran was alone, knowing that if he failed to secure the castle correctly, he and Allura would die and the last hope to defeating Zarkon would be gone. Maybe he prepared himself what was for all he knew a final meal. We know how much Coran loves to cook. And then with the castle powered down for its long sleep, Coran stepped up into the sleep chamber in the darkened room and stood there as the chamber froze him, not knowing if he would ever wake up.

A Shipper’s Life Cycle

Btw I’m sorry beforehand if this could be considered crosstagging but I’m just curious to know about other shippers’ opinion about this. (If you’re a non-shipper I think this post is irrelevant for you)

Y’know after doing a bit of thinking after being in fandoms for years, I observed that usually a shipper could multiship pairings that centered on their most fave chara (even when maybe just actually shipping 1 pairing and ironically shipping others as one sided pairing / side dysfunctional pairing / friends with benefits thing only).

America’s fans typically multiship USUK, RusAme, Ameripan, FrUS, AmeCan, PruAme, GerAme, etc.

For Russia’s fans: RusAme, RoChu, RusEng, RusPru, FRussia, etc.

England’s fans : USUK, FrUK, Asakiku, RusEng, etc.

France’s fans: FrUK, FrUssia, FrUS, FraNada, etc.

Japan’s fans: AmeriPan, AsaKiku, RusPan, NiChu, etc.

China’s fans: RoChu, AmeChu, IggyChu, etc.

After discovering that pattern, I realize that this is the most typical route a shipper could go through:

1. Having the most fave chara in a fandom

2. Begin to observe that their fave chara’s interaction with this particular chara is / would be interesting.

3. Realizing they want to see MORE of that pairing from step 2 and begin to explore fandom for more fanworks of the said pairing. Maybe even contributing fanfics/arts/hcs for the said pairing.

4. After some times, they begin to get bored of the pairing, and may ship their most fave chara with other charas. Or maybe they will move on to other fandom.

But as for me, I usually don’t have any most fave chara at first and skip to step 2. Like for RusAme, I actually fell in love with their interaction / dynamics first (thanks to amazing RA fanfics), and then begin to love the characters of the ship (in my case it’s Ivan since I could relate to him more).

But still, even when I later discover fondness of the chara, I still love the interaction of both charas more than I love the chara themselves.

Like for me, RusAme > My Fondness for Ivan > My Fondness for Alfred, other charas, and pairings that doesn’t conflict with RusAme. And this is why I find it hard to multiship pairing (unless it’s ironically shipping) that conflicts with RusAme since I’ve still yet to find ship that’s more versatile than RusAme (I’m really a helpless RusAme shipper at this point).

So I’m just curious, What about you guys? Are you guys in the 1st category (love the chara more than the pairing) or like me(love the pairing more than the chara)? Or maybe you guys went through different shipper’s lifecycle?

I went through the first category. I was a big USUK shipper at the time but I also shipped Alfred with other characters. As time passed by, I started shipping RusAme. I can’t really stand seeing them with other characters, so I guess I love the pairing more than the chara now??

Aah I see, so you begin with the 1st cycle, and then now you’re like me, liking the pairing more than the charas themselves! Yep I guess there’s nothing absolute in this cycle, you could end up liking the pairing more, then liking the character more, etc. It’s a cycle afterall ^_^

I’ve done this. I’m alive because of this.

My flat-mate’s date for the night was almost as drunk as her. She had passed out in her room and locked the door. He refused to leave because he wanted to have sex. He also demanded food because he was dealing with “whiskey dick”. He didn’t like the lack of food in the fridge. I called 911, did the stuff stated above, and he was getting PISSED about how long the “order” was taking. He took my phone, demanded they “hurry the fuck up”. Police arrived two minutes later, arrested him, and helped me file a police report. Pressing charges wasn’t necessary because he had warrants on him from THREE different states for the very thing he planned to do to me. Several months after this happened one of the officers informed me he was charged with two felonies because he crossed stay lines, and will be serving no less than 35 years in prison. The officer ripped into my flat-mate about her bringing home complete strangers, while drunk, knowing full well this shit could happen.

This was 14 years ago.

Do the pizza order, do it as calmly as you can. The dispatcher I spoke to said things like this:

“If he’s drunk say you want mushrooms.” I said I want extra mushrooms.

“If he’s threatening you with sexual assault say you want onions.” I said I want onions.

She went like this with different toppings and sauces for a description of him, like pineapple if he’s blonde, black olives if he’s tall, extra large if he’s tall, etc.

They’ve heard this sort of coded call before. They’re trained for it. They will understand what you’re saying. Order the pizza.
