the phrases 'dark money' and 'money in politics' have become so ubiquitous that they are starting to lose meaning.
look I (work in political spaces) also think (have worked in political spaces for more than a decade) that having infinite money from corporations and billionaires (I understand intimately how people like the kochs spent 30 years undermining campaign finance law until we got citizens united) is very very very bad for democracy (much like you I have been alive the past several years) but I need people to understand two things:
1. there is a difference between fossil fuel magnates creating a series of civic interest 501c4 organizations and PACs that all feed into each other and donate money back and forth until original donors are obscured and they can promote climate denying huxters and they all make each other richer, and a bunch of regional labor federations pooling funds in various 501c4 labor offshoots and PACs to run program in support of pro-labor candidates
AND
2. those two things use the same laws and campaign finance rules to do that. they are very very very similar on paper
idk man the conversation is way more nuanced than 'get money out of politics' and we need to take that seriously if we want to get actual serious reform that prevents bazillionaires from buying elections without undermining the power of unions and issue advocacy orgs.

for fans of shirley jackson: check out kathryn harlan's book of short stories, fruiting bodies. it's so so so very excellent. each story had me sitting and staring into space for a while afterward. the title story is one of the best short stories I've read in a long, long time.
if I had a nickel for every time a doomed love interest named satine died in the arms of a character played by ewan mcgregor, I'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it is weird it happened twice.
they need to add a dust emoji. applications: to express that you have been ground up into dust. when you can't speak and you are coughing up dust. when you are dry and crumble into dust. when you are old and covered with dust. when a villain attacks your home and everything has been reduced to dust

I would like to issue a formal apology to every fic I've scoffed at for having someone walking around on a broken leg insisting they're fine. it is, apparently, a totally plausible thing to go running, go up and down stairs, and work a six-hour barista shift while simply being annoyed at the sharp, shooting pain in your leg.
in my defense, I didn't know it was possible to literally fracture your bones by running, something which is purportedly good for you.
tbh I need people to read Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett just because the frequency with which I want to say something is “a delight unto Nuggan” is like. high.
my little mental health app wanted me to doodle a self portrait but unfortunately I was listening to noah kahan again and I have a long drive tomorrow
Marylanders don’t say hi hello how are you my name is they just try to kill you with their car. which is of course a great honor in their culture
In Northern Virginia the country of my birth people kill you with their car because you deserve it. sic semper tyrannis
did you know that old school kerosene lanterns can be filled instead with citronella oil and used to keep bugs away
cheers to my great-grandfather who worked on the railroad a hundred years ago your lantern holds up good
hate my job. laura hale hours instead.

it's a good thing mensah is already married with kids by the start of all systems red because can you imagine trying to make a new longterm relationship work when you have to explain to potential partners that murderbot will be there. no not romantically or sexually. but it is there.
