Indonesia Bans Premarital Sex

Earlier this week a new law was PASSED which dictated the following:

extramarital sex will be punished by up to one year in jail + a fine (same-sex relationships are not legally recognized in Indonesia, this provision effectively criminalizes all same-sex conduct. It will also subject all sex workers to criminal prosecution.

couples who live together without being legally married could be sentenced to six months in prison

“obscene acts” in public with a penalty of up to six months in prison. This article could be used to target LGBT people.

teachers, parents, the media, and community members cannot talk about contraceptions (condoms, birth control etc.)

only doctors have the right to decide to perform an abortion. A woman who aborted her pregnancy could be sentenced to up four years in prison.

“insults” to the president or vice president are criminalized

NOT CONFIRMED but there are also rumors that it may become illegal for women to be out passed 10 pm.

Currently, thousands of students are protesting these laws, asking for it to be repealed. The president has yet to comment on the situation but if when he does, he sides with the law and not the people, the riots are going to become more violent and aggressive.

so like okay, 

I don’t know why I’ve been obsessively thinking about the concept of “gaydar” 

but I have. 

Actually no it’s because a straight family member used the term like 

“oh I have really great gaydar” 

and it made me feel really gross 

and it took me like a full hour to realize why. 

When heterosexual people say that, 

it feels like they’re bragging about their ability to clock us, you know? 

like a straight person is telling me that they can spot us queers at 50 paces 

and i’m immediately going to be uncomfortable with that, 

whereas when other queer folks talk about being able to spot each other 

it’s a tool for survival. 

Like here’s the thing right? 

being able to tell is important sometimes.  

Here’s an example: 

A couple summers ago I was in a very very small town in Nova Scotia, Canada 

(like 6 buildings small) 

and I met a woman in the library who was probably a little older than my actual mother. 

She was there most days using the wifi 

because she lived across the street in an apartment without internet. 

We sat at the same table a few times and spoke briefly about life in passing 

and after a few of these not-talking-about-gay-stuff convos I was pretty sure she was a part of the lgbtq community 

and I slipped in a casual pronoun re: an ex 

and she just looked at me, 

stopped completely 

and said “oh thank fuck, I thought so.” 

and instantly started talking about her girlfriend, 

it was like this huge wave of relief washed over both of us 

because we were in a small rural town and both hovering in this really queer space and unable to talk about it. 

Anyway she was really rad and took me to the closest big town to buy me a tim hortons coffee 

because she found it reprehensible that I had been in canada for more than 3 weeks already and hadn’t ever had it. 

Almost instantly it was like 

“oh okay we have this thing in common that other people may not be cool with 

but we can actually exist and not hide shit without the fear of violence or anger”

but when it’s a straight person

they’re pretty much just letting you know that they can spot the fact that you seem “abnormal” to them 

like great

this is such a good mash up of fear-mongering/Islamophobic nonsensical garbage that i don’t know which is more insane–the fact people would think “Muslim” qualifies as a culture or that someone’s actually saying it’s the reason people are fleeing from hostile territories

–There is no such thing as “muslim” culture, there’s 1.8+ billion muslims in the world belonging to various backgrounds and thus having various cultures–Islam is a religion, not a singular culture. –The recent influx of immigrants from all over the world, in particular MENA, is the result of oppressive regimes depriving their citizens of human rights, exercising state-sponsored violence, and the presence of ongoing warfare. To imply anything else would be a lie. 

–To assume all immigrants are Muslim is ignorant in that it overlooks the millions of non-Muslim refugees escaping hostile territories–i know it might be hard to believe but not all brown/black folks oversees are muslim! who knew. 

–To say that Muslims in their host country are complaining about “lack of muslim culture” is just lazy and childish. Muslim AND non-Muslim asylum seekers/refugees have every right to demand humane treatment + the freedom of religious expression and to call that “complaining” is just such a crybaby thing to do. 

–Unfortunately none of what you just said made any sense so you’ll have to find another reason to excuse your xenophobic, islamophobic point of view.

Rachel House still voices Grandma Tala, Temuera Morrison still voices the Chief, and Jemaine Clement still voices Tamatoa.

Rob Ruha and Jemaine Clement translated and rearranged the music so that the songs still worked while sung in a different language, which is super impressive.

Also: Air New Zealand will feature the Maori version on their in flight entertainment starting in November!
