Being hungover really makes it hard to transcribe Mozart
2nds: Melodic 2nds lead and Harmonic 2nds Dilute
ahhh 2nds the most indefinite harmonic interval that any scale or modality has ever known. Now we love 2nds as passing tones because they lead into the big "moment" that happens; this is good, we need foils to let us do what we want and move as we wish. As it stands though 2nds have highly outdated their peak of actual necessity, it was in the classical era with mozart and haydn. They used them to lead into the phrase not to dilute the phrase; take mozart piano sonata 16, most of what that sonata is, is stepwise motion to the big beats of 1 and 3. Now I believe mozart did this because he knew how notes functioned and where/what was the thing he was driving towards. A thing to note is that they are done melodically instead of harmonically; melodic 2nds lead and harmonic 2nds dilute. Which is why they are not considered functional harmony because when you get note close together is scrambles where the "root" is. In modal arabic music the 2nds are used because they lead to the strong tendency tones of the mode so you get the augmented 2nds and the neutral 2nds to divide the larger scale into small parts that is then used to ornament and "toy" with. Now all this is good but what im actually getting at is that 2nds don't define any thing they only lead and resolve (two in the same), and the glory of them is that they prolong lines to the extent of your imagination. Now I want to dissect the idea of the augmented 2nd; its an interesting idea because it still functions as a 2nd but as a minor 3rd as well, so a big leap is made "going from flat two to three" that the flat two plays with 1 and three plays with 4 which in arabic modality based off of d. So that moving from 1 to 4 is clarified very specifically; four is a big deal so seconds just play off of what they want to, to move from 1 to 4. The world gets intensified in what it wants too at that moment through all of its amalgamations of the conscious spirit seeing its self. which is why the 2nds get moved into and out of the spotlight
Reading The Grout
So to I guess have some credibility behind all of my subsequential talks I will inform you that over the summer and winter break taking a break during fall quarter I read "A History of Western Music" (4th ed.) By Grout and as any self respecting music major will tell you that it is the benchmark of all history books regarding the western musical culture from the ancient greeks to 20th century music. Now obviously the history side of the Grout is impeccable there is so much information its crazy but a thing that sticks out is that teachers will tell you the importance of all composers on music in their genre and what changed after they died, but their is more than that as we all know as musicians and scholars of music. Music is a cycle of self expression that people go through throughout their lives and some are obviously stuck more in the music than others (Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Landini, Liszt, Haydn, and well everyone) but they all lived and interacted with the rest of the world better than we do now (To an extent). This is a thing that is lost in todays society of musicians, teachers, and commoners as well; it is quite easy to get sucked into a distraction that we eventually get addicted to in different degrees. This has to do with media, popular culture, the government putting money into pharmaceuticals to "dull us",the technology of socialization, and school. (Yes school our school system that goes on today in the 21st century in my opinion is disgraceful.) But the thing that made this book really interesting is that it helped me understand: To understand music in a more natural sense start analysing the masters and understand what and why they did something, to never stop expressing your self you need to express yourself while you are living and experiencing life, learn what you need/want to not what you have to, and to live!! The masters lived and composed and composed while living in an endless cycle, Beethoven with his deftness and battle for his nephews custody is a classic one (and well also falling head over heals for pretty aristocratic ladies and then getting dumped classic) and all others Liszt, Bernstein, Mozart and the boys and ladies. So what my main point is that their is more to music than just history every action has a million reactions so why not have some reactions.
The new direction of this thing
So i have decided that I need a place to share all my "information" that I come up with about music, psychology, politics, and anything else that end up thinking about I hope you like and if not debate with me I would love to prove my point or listen to one that is superior than mine
