The use of Last Train Home

Don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but this "relationship on the rocks" ballad by John Mayer plays over this scene from S01E6 above. Carmy apologizes to Syd over being terse with her in the episode after she has him try her risotto and short ribs dish.

The opening lyrics are:

THEY ARE SO SICK FOR THIS. Finished rewatching Season 1 today. THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD! It got even better on rewatch. All Sydcarmy moments are like tattooed in my brain, I'll never be tired of their relationship and these characters <3

Carmy is the walk-in - the fridge guy is a therapist - the T is for therapy

The fridge is his self preservation and we experience The Bear from Carmy’s perspective and it’s very reminiscent of Bella and Edward; blue af and cool toned like ice, coldness and glaciers like his eyes.

The renovation is the staff removing the toxicity (mouldy walls) and rebuilding.

They are the pots and pans that were ‘barkeeper-ed’ into a second life (science baby).

The one person that didn’t receive the barkeeper’s treatment was Carmy - he was resistant to the change, he starts seeing Claire in a last ditch effort to revel in the past and stops the Al-Anon meetings and so he’s regressing and like the handle of the walk-in he’s still broken.

The one thing everyone agrees on from the show runners to the actors to Natalie to the fandom is that Carmy desperately needs fixing via individual therapy.

Carmy is the fridge that needs to be fixed and he never calls the fridge guy. . .never goes to therapy

Somehow he’s both the fire and the ice; things necessary in the running of a kitchen. His love for his family and friends is the fire but he’s also cold, hardened, frigid because of the hand he was dealt in life (a more eloquent, poetic writer kindly run with this).

So maybe in the last season of the show they’ll have to get a new walk-in installed or maybe not because having experienced trauma we don’t just get to replace our old selves, no, ultimately we keep working on ourselves; fixing bits and pieces as we march on - by replacing the handle, changing the shelves, installing new lighting etc.

Watching The Bear is like... What if everyone loved you? What if they loved you so fucking much and what if you did right by them? What if you and your best friend took all your traumas and mixed them together and decided no-one else should go through that shit to be meaningful in your world? What if you fucked up and then got to take a breath and clean up and apologize? What if they gave you a chance and then helped you back up when you fell and you got to come through for them, over and over and over? Wouldn't that be so nice?

Pregnant moment

When Syd falls into the hole in the wall after she’s joined Carmy and Nat in the office and afterwards Carmy reminds Syd that she was talking about being calm and taking things step by step and by the way that whole scene is bookended with Nat really wanting to tell Carm she’s pregnant, first she’s hinting at it with telling him she’s going to throw up and then after she’s telling him the timing is not right to become the PM, which Sydney asked her to do and Carm thinks is interesting (her being PM or that Sydney asked her? I think the latter or both) and Carm is staring at the hole and tells her to keep thinking about it (being PM) but she misunderstands and says I’ll keep thinking about that hole and the camera pans on her, a very pregnant moment of Nat thinking of the hole that Syd exposed was there and Mikey put there and Richie reveals was Mikey’s back up plan to burn it all down. And Carm is staring at and focusing on that hole. Syd is filling the hole in their family. The hole that Mikey put there. Syd is joining them and working to rebuild not burn down the family Berzatto dream. She found the hole while talking about the need to calming and incrementally build this thing. She jokes it’s not the first hole she fell through—just by being her she exposes and fills in what’s missing, what’s needed. It’s not her first time, she has experience and she’s not going to not hire a PM again. She’s going to get it right this time. Nat is growing a baby, PMs track and manage the progress of a project, just like a mother tracks the progress of her growing baby in and out of the womb (hole?). Meanwhile Carmy is staring in the distance deep in thought and tracking what Syd was saying before she fell in the hole, showing us that this whole scene means so much more than paperwork and jumping through hoops and project managing, it means listening and slowing down and it means love and pregnancy and family and grief and rebuilding… am I making sense my insights are toppling over each other because that’s how the scene is done, everything is overlapping and inseparable and layered.

Then when Carmy and Nat are in the office and Nat is finally telling him about being pregnant and the whole wall comes down and Sydney is right there where Carmy is. Such a pregnant moment.

Why do Chris and Co keep doing this to me?! Like this show is such a gold mine!! Every day I’m finding new shit !! Ughhhh!! YOUR BRILLIANT BRILLIANT MIND!! It’s make sense now. When Carmy said, “How much insurance is cover for people falling through a fucking hole?,” where is the support that people truly need (Mikey and other family members). Natalie said, “Well certainly not the good kind,” their dysfunctional family. Carmy acknowledging their a hole in the wall (Trauma) . Natalie already knowing focusing on the whole (Trauma) But Carmy doesn’t want it to define him and want Nat to think about the future (The restaurant). Also, slide note by Richie covering up the hole, it foreshadows his purpose . As well as by Carmy focusing on the hole that Sydney fell through foreshadowed his full focus on Sydney.
