everyone on replies is terrified of this fact but i just think it's so sweet and heartwarming. she's holding our hand and leading us somewhere secret and we're both giggling like kids. i love her

you know, I'm not actually SURE in theory, but it's now on my list of things to test. I'll answer the actual ask once I have time to test this! Thank you anon <3
I'll test it with a screen reader as well, but my gut instinct is that this is DEF gonna fuck with screenreaders too. I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth doing anyway, but I think we should view anything like that as a temporary stand-in while we work toward something better that doesn't put people with accessibility needs in the line of fire.
I've also thought of this! Apparently you can use the aria-hidden HTML attribute in order to make screen readers ignore an element. Personally, I was thinking of making a script that would insert a paragraph of gibberish with aria-hidden and display:none between every normal paragraph. My own biggest worry is for downloads, since I have no idea what would or wouldn't be picked up when trying to download the fic as a PDF, EPUB, etc
UPDATE: Looks like the aria-hidden attribute doesn't work on Ao3, however, it doesn't seem to be needed? I did some research and got NVDA to test, and it looks like anything with the display:none style will be assumed to be non-interactable and automatically ignored by screen readers. Will be back with results of download testing in a minute
Oh hell yes, nice to see a potential win
OKAY, I worked on a script to insert some random, invisible garbage yesterday and applied it to a couple of my shorter, less popular fics to test. Everything seems to be working on my end, but I'd love to get some more eyes on it to make sure I didn't miss anything before I make the tool public
This fic has an extra paragraph of junk in between every normal paragraph
This fic has single words randomly sprinkled throughout
You can see the junk if you turn off creator's style. Native Ao3 downloads still don't work, but saving the page through your browser seems to work fine
Looks totally normal at a glance! If you're okay with it, I'll run both of these through a scrape tool to confirm it comes through with the gibberish as it should.
Yes please! I'd love to see if it actually works
works well with the code nyuuzyou shared >:)
This is the ugly formatting you get before you clean up the data, and if you look at the work body here, it's obviously messed up. BUT if actually scraped, this would be buried among millions of other works, so it would likely go unnoticed.

Awesome >:)
I've uploaded the script as a Python command line tool on my GitHub for anyone who wants to use it: https://github.com/TricksOfLoki/fic-poison (and I'm thinking of trying to make an online version so that you can just copy and paste text in a webpage, so you don't have to deal with files and Python at all)
HELL yes. Sharing here for anyone who would like to try this out. I haven't gotten to run it for my own fics yet, but I did read through the GitHub to make sure nothing looks off! I expect to attempt with a few of my own fics later tonight.
Friendly reminder that I am still a stranger on the internet, and best practice is to read and understand code for yourself before deciding to use it. Using this will require you to access it via GitHub and to run Python code. Python is not a language I know well, and I can't guide anyone through using it. This is something you can do on your own initiative if you're comfortable with it. There are lots of free text-based and video tutorials on using GitHub if you don't know how and want to give it a try.
Only callout I see at a glance is that the list of random words generated includes "fuck" so I'd recommend giving your final result a skim and removing any randomized word that isn't appropriate for the rating of your fic. (If you're posting an explicit fic, 'fuck' is whatever. But feels a little sketch putting that in a G-rated fic, even if it's hidden by default.)

i think we as modern humans have a tendency to forget that historical people were also humans who had thoughts and feelings and dreams just like we do
bear in mind that i'm mostly interested in medieval english history, but... do you really think that all women suffered miserable, joyless lives? that no man ever loved his wife? that no gay person ever lived in peace? that no child ever grew up to live a life they loved? that no parent ever saw their disabled child and cared for them anyway? that nobody ever had sex, and enjoyed it? that no priest was ever truly virtous, that nunneries were always places where women were sent away to be locked up? do you really think that it was just suffering day in, day out, unless you were the richest of the rich? do you really think that simply living in a different time made people stupid, senseless, violent? do you really think that people living in the past were so different from us, that they never had thoughts and feelings and dreams to rival our own?
do you really think that people in the past were not people?
