I made another art journal page inspired by Nancy Drew; this time it's Danger on Deception Island themed. Turns out I own a lot of beach themed stickers so I was happy to use those up.

oh, this little gold ornament on Sonny/Nancy's desk actually works as a really neat little character detail! it's modelled after a pre-colombian artifact purchased by the Smithsonian from Thomas Herran in 1891, presumably after it was uncovered in northwest Colombia during the same period when a collection of so-called "Quimbaya Treasure" was looted and sold. the ancient indigenous peoples of this region were particularly known for their detailed gold craftsmanship and this artifact is just one example of an impressive and longstanding artistic tradition. scholars interpret this particular piece (and others like it) as a stylized bird, insect, or flying fish.
(note: artifacts uncovered in this region have historically been labelled as Quimbaya in origin, regardless of whether they actually originated from the ancient Quimbaya ethnic group. similar artifacts in the collection of the British Museum and the Met are now attributed to unknown Tolima artists.)
...but if we leave the realm of real scholarship and take a look at ancient-aliens-style conspiracy theories, we'll find people who argue that these stylized animal figures are actually scale-model depictions of ancient aircraft. there was literally a segment on Ancient Aliens the television show that set out to "prove" that these "Tolima Jets" were representations of actual ancient jet planes. and thus this is exactly the type of artifact that would appeal to Nancy's terminally-conspiracy-brained predecessor Sonny Joon, noted guy who thinks the classical Maya left Earth on spacecraft and somehow attributes Pascal's triangle to aliens.
Okay but here’s the thing, Tex, if you’re going to ask some random girl to feed the horses KNOWING she’s never done that before and KNOWING a small slip-up could be fatal and having neglected to label ANY of the various horse feeds and you don’t even bother to check that she’s done it right, then it’s 100% your fault that the horse is collicking!!

I’m incredibly excited to reveal what I’ve been working on for the last couple weeks! It’s a portrait of Frances Humber, titled Flowers On Your Favorites. Drawn in pencil, inked with Micron pens, then colored in Photoshop. I incorporated as many of Frances’ favorite flowers as I could; sunflowers, tulips, and Harrison’s Yellow roses. The shape of the frame was inspired by the radio sitting next to her picture in the game. This is the first Nancy Drew drawing I’ve ever done, and I’m super proud of it.
